I can attest to that.  I fished there on Saturday and hooked a nice adult there right off the bat, but it was smolt-after-smolt until I left that spot an hour later.  Caught quite a few right upstream from the Rt. 5 bridge as well.  I didn't catch any at 12 or 20 mile though.

My personal opinion. Seen and caught a lot of them. When i get a scanner ill post. The average size ive seen with my friend(clark charters)is bigger than anywhere he has fished which is everywhere.I really believe salmon river is underestemated by a lot of people.

    Jonny,

A LARGE SR Steelhead, is AVERAGE, or at least common on many west coast rivers.

thanx for the info everyone. i doubt i need to make a trip to salmon river for anything. i would rather spend my time at kinzu tailrace, but that is only a opinon. 2 years ago on the first day of pa trout i watched one guy fishin at the wall, throwin his bait between the rush of the outflow and landed 6 different species in a shotr time. i think thats what its all about.

What ??? Title - "Smolt Stocking" 5 posts on topic then, off track totally. I must have missed something. Anyway, back to the topic - smolt are everywhere, pretty hard to fish and not run across some/many no matter where you are. Just have to walk and plunk and wait (won't have to wait long if smolt are present) If you make 5-6 drifts without a take it's a good bet few if any smolts are in that spot. They're on bait/flies like white on rice.

How about 20 mile up into NY? I have walked some of that off of irish rd. There are steel all the way to Sherman, well South Ripley anyways. A couple of holes were some monster Browns too. Cliff fishin can be kinda hairy at times. lol

This will be the first year for a NY permit for me. Heck, it only cost a few more dollars in NY than a resident PA with a combo. Commonwelth nickel and dimein us I guess.

Doubtful - but we can hope. The PSA has done wonders with landowner relations and our boy Beaver got zinged on the Little J didn't he? I know, it's a different situation on 20. But we can still hope the money mongers realize you don't have to pay thousands to fish good water. But $$$$ doesn't mean much to those that have it all.

    Seejib,

That section will never be open to the public ( whether DB continues his lease, or not ), as long as the current landowner, remains the landowner. Both from the reason(s) for it's intitial posting, and the reaction TO that posting, I don't blame her a bit.

Spoon, I'm sure you're right. Was a bad thing and it snowballed from there. But, one can hope. Until then, there's plenty of other water for all to enjoy as long as we respect it and the mistakes of the past don't repeat.

Thats just too bad, sounds like a few bad apples made it bad for the rest. I usually end up making the trip across town to the nut and elk but this year I'll be holdin a NY permit and will be walkin 20 mile all the way up the hill, at least the spots I can. Are there any posted spots in NY that you know of?

I know of none in NY. Keep in mind that the posted "Dohler' property only extends a few hundred yards. From there, it is open for several miles to Rt.20, and posted again for only a 100 yds. or so, then open to the state line. LOT'S of Penna. water to fish.

Being somewhat of a novice yet I try to stay clear of packed up holes. I have gone in just below hertzels and walked up to I90 bridge, all good if its not too many people. The high tressel I also visit often, don't get caught on the tressle when Mr. csx comes along, what a rush!

I do know of a few places in NY that are posted.

I know a couple of people that live down irish rd but I don't know whats south of that. from what I understand most of 20 mile south of the NY line is ok to fish if you want to take some risk. many spots are hard to get to, maby I'll have all to myself.

Its kinda a drag when people post specific spots...upper, middle and lower 20 would be better.  Not telling you or anybody off, so please don't take it the wrong way....
