okay,one more time!!!!

Good grief, not a complete lesson on species!!!Somehow over the years, some steel spawned sucessfully in the river,it just has to be..So my question is,has anyone caught steel without a clipped hatchery fin??? If so,it lends credence that natural spawning is actually taking place....frank

Frank, one more time, because the fry of the Steelhead stay in the river thru at least one summer it is next to zero that they survived the warm temps in the past. Now that there is a minimum flow there is a SLIGHT chance that they live long enough to migrate to the lake and attain any size. They spawn successfully but the fry do not live long enough to make the cycle. There is a REMOTE chance that stream spawned fish are caught in the SR.However,a smolt that is raised in the hatchery and spends a year or two in the lake is plenty WILD enough for me!
To answer your question on fin clips, yes I have caught fish without clips, but I have no idea if they were stream bred,I doubt it.

Smaller tribs have gotten beautiful unfin clipped fish with no visable rubbed down from hatchery wall fins for years. On one trib I fish a small number on smolt drop back toward the lake a month to a month and a half after the stocked smolt go down in schools. These fish are singles or very small pods and about 2 inchs longer than the stockies. Are they natural? Who knows but they are unclipped and show no sign of being in a hatchery.

Maybe take a trip to Canada where they have reported successful wild reproduction or better yet head over to the west coast of this country where they do have wild steelhead.

Have I caught unclipped fish ?? Yep lots of them. Are they wild? I don't know , but I'd like to think so.

There is almost certainly a SMALL level of natural reproduction in our higher quality tributaries--including the Salmon River.

Yes, I have netted numerous unclipped mature steelhead during the past seasons.  In addtion, I have caught numerous unclipped rainbow trout in the Salmon River during the summer months.

    Like this:

Given the number of unclipped juveniles and 2-year olds I have caught during the summer I doubt they were all mistakes.

I'm trying to understand all this because I have a 17lb hen mounted, caught in winter 2005 at the Trooper hole and she has no fin clips.  She had none that I remember when I caught her and as a mount she has none showing on her left side or adipose.  So do all hatchery fish have clips or no?

The only NY, Lake Ontario rainbows that get clipped are those fish stocked in the Salmon River.  The other 530 thousand steelhead and domestics are unclipped as are the Skamanias not stocked in the SR.
