Flintlock coyote

Drove to a farm I have not hunted in a few years. Was greeted by 2 degree temps and three trucks pulled into the farmers field. Somewhat dejected I went to one of my favorite spots there. As the woods were coming alive I saw a fawn trotting my way and stopping every so often to look back. She got to within 15 yards and finally spotted me as she was very focused on her back trail and trotted past. I didn't want to shoot her. I kept watching and after about 10 minutes caught movement from where she was watching.

Coyote! Mangey skinny thing was angled up the hill at about 150 yards. I lip squeaked a few times and it looked my way. I lip squeaked again and here she came. I cocked the hammer and steadied the Firestorm on my shooting sticks and she closed. I saw movement behind her and there was another coyote coming. Much larger and well furred. That was the one I focused on as the the lead coyote started to angle downwind of me and stopped at 20 yards to my left. I could see her out of the corner of my eye and she had me pegged. The larger coyote kept coming and stopped at 30 yards as I settled in and touched it off. After a 20 yard death run it was over. A very large male with beautiful fur.

This is the second I have shot with the flintlock. Pretty dang proud after lip squeaking the pair in. Happier to shoot a coyote than a doe.

Way to go Gene, congratulations.  I have a pair running around here just like them, the female is all mangy looking but the male seems fine. My problem is that I only see them on camera

Congrats. Good looking coyote. Good work drawing it in and making the shot.

Good story too. Would have been cool watching that fawn being hunted down.
