Lake conditions

I  am wondering what the main lake is like now?  Is there still any ice out on it?  I heard that there was bergs floating.  Looking to maybe hit the lake this week end.

Ask FishBurgh, I'm sure he would be willing you help you out.  NOT!!!!!!

In all seriousness...I don't think there is much ice around and the forecast for the weekend is supposed to be beautiful.  Can't hurt to try.  Continue to watch the weather+wind throughout the week and see how it goes.  Good Luck!

As for your question, no ice by the PA shoreline, but the lake is alittle cold still. I havent seen any boats out yet. I have seen some in the bay. I would wait at least a month and let the lake warm up.

No.  I simply have a passion to fish, I fish and I catch fish.  Bottom line.  I also, unlike you, am willing to offer help to a guy who is in need.  If that annoys you, I'm sorry, but I'm sure if you had as much passion and spent as much time in here as I admit I do, you would surely hold the title.  For now, I'll gladly represent.

Oh, and I speak my mind, tell it the way it is.  I expect that to annoy some people, especially the whiners.  Oops, I shouldn't have said it that way and I apologize...let me rephrase....especially the more sensitive!

Thanks guys.  I have seen the forcast and it looks fair right now.  I have had some luck with the water temps at 40 before.  You never know  if the next good weekend  is next week or next month.  It seems the best way to go is when the wind allows it.

What are you looking to fish for?  I am not planning on doing anything in the lake till temps hit the mid to upper 40s at least.  Guess it really depends on what you are looking to catch.

As of two weeks ago there was still 1200 sq. miles of ice on lake erie...as of last Thursday the entire ice boom at the head of the niagara river was opened. With all the cold weather I wouldn't be surprised if there is still ice out in the lake.  Keep your eyes open for bergs!!

MODIS images at Coast watch show no ice west at all.  There is a VERY little ice left near the mouth of the Niagara at Buffalo but it will be gone very shortly with impending warm up and flow down the river now that the boom is gone.

Does it seem that the lake temperatures are lower than normal for this time of year?

Every year, I start my Erie boating (smallmouth) season the 1st weekend of May. Was planning on doing the same this year.

EVERYTHING is colder than normal this year.   Inland lake temperatures have dropped 10 degrees in the last 3 weeks, when normally they'd have risen 10 degrees.  This absolutely, positively, SUCKS!!     I love the cold, in January, but not in April.

Fished this  past weekend.  Water temp was 41 on Friday, 43 on Saturday, and I recorded  temps of 50 on Sunday  on the main lake.  Wind was light to no wind at all.  Water was pretty clear.  Caught some fish.  Smallmouths that is.  They have not turned on or are not there in numbers yet.  But it sure was nice to get out on the lake.  Averaged about 20 a day in boat.

That sounds basically in line with my past experiences. Every year, I start my Erie smallie the 1st weekend of May. Seems I can always count on the surface temp on the main lake (in about 25 ft of water, and East of the cribs), to be 52 degrees. I ussually don't catch a large quantity of bass that weekend, but the ones I do catch are large. As the month of May goes on, I seem to catch more, but progressively smaller fish. Don't know why that is.
