Hockey Talk '21

With the end of the regular season almost here. I figured it's time to get back to basics on this Off Topic Board.

Pens get old man Jeff Carter today for a couple picks down the road. He's got 2 Cups and will fill in for Geno on the 2nd line, then prolly bump down to 3rd line Center. I'd like to see them get alittle bigger before this deadline. Maybe bring back Guebranson?? We shall see.

    No other trades.

I'm fine with the Pens pickup. Carter didn't cost much at all. Knows what it takes to win in the playoffs, big time game experience.

Still concerned with Worshington though. Pens will need Star Power and the goalies to play **** near perfect if they're gonna take them in a 7 game series.
Contrary to most Yinzers, I like Tom Wilson a lot, and his presence in a series is a big thing to look out for. Not like Washington has anyone else to worry about

I think they should've kept the picks but hopefully I'm wrong. Maybe a change of scenery will invigorate Mr. Carter

If you look at what picks they are, at face value a 2nd and a 3rd doesn't sound like much BUT.. Jake was a 3rd rounder and Rusty was also, just to name a couple. So I would have to agree with ya FC. As Sid and Geno get older, the team is going to need to look to the future and picks, usually is where that future comes from. Hopefully Carter turns out to be Guerrin in '09 and not Marleu in '20. Overall, we as Penguin fans, have to be happy where the team is and their chances to make a deep run.

I just read up on the trade details and see that the Kings will retain 50% of Carter's contract. That will lessen the loss of the picks as long as he brings some secondary scoring to the team

The Pens brass always seems to be willing to help make a push for a run.  They know it won't always work, but they seem to at least try every year.  I'm not a huge Pens fan by any means, but I have always respected the program for putting a real effort into trying to be a championship team every year.  Stillers too, but usually do most of their work in the draft and retaining their own talent.  There used to be a major league baseball team around here, unfortunately just semi-pro soccer and baseball left.

After a week, the jury is still out on Carter. He's not horrible, but it woulda been nice to have him pop a goal or two in the net, early on. They probably weren't gonna beat Buffalo eight games in a season anyways. It's hard to season sweep a team. I believe one more with Philly and Boston then they play the two bottom feeders five more times. I'm anxious to see if they hold the whole playoffs up for the "Canadian" division to finish up. Canucks have like 15games to play yet. Granted they should get to finish up ,but nothing they can do will get them to 50-60 points and into the playoffs. I'm not gonna complain too loud though, it's great to have NHL playoffs right around the corner.

Well, that was quite the 3rd period yesterday....ummm....not sure what to think......I guess it goes to show you what can happen when you take your foot off the gas pedal in the NHL...or....maybe in the Pen's case, playing WAY TOO loose.....

I think Jarry got way to cocky trying to score that empty netter. I'm sure he won't do that again. NJ is still an NHL team, just like Buffalo is. These guys are tired of being the door mats of the East and they are going to play to the final whistle. 2 points is still 2 points, but they did get a little too loose after the 6th goal.

Very sloppy play in the 3rd especially by Letang and Jarry but I didn't understand why Sullivan didn't roll all 4 lines more than he did after having the big lead.  Seemed like the 4th line didn't play much in the 3rd in fact they were all under 8-9 minutes toi.  Hopefully it was an outlier and we don't see that again
Pens is 100% correct, NJ is still a professional team with good young talent that plays hard.

That game today definetly had a playoff feel to it. Guys selling out to block shots, cleaning up the defensive zone and all the other little things you'd expect out of April hockey. 10 games left for the Pens.

Not real sure how they would stack up against a Colorado or Las Vegas but I'd love to get a chance to see. #SIDVSFLOWERFINAL

Didn’t get to see the game today but it’s nice to see Jarry finally get a shut out. Also saw the pens took no penalties

There was only 1 call all game and Jake drew it while Boston had him 4 on 1 in their own zone with the extra attacker out. Lol

I was there today. Was insanely boring from an in person perspective. That Penalty at the end of the game was the only real exciting thing, aside from Guentzel's goal, which was really nice.

The way they have beer setup is awesome. Walk into a cooler section like at a Sheetz, pick your beer out, set the beer on a register which auto scans it - pay with debit card.
Food was just like an MTO at a Sheetz too. select touch screen, pick food ya want, order.

With around 5k people there, we were all spread out, no one within 12 feet of eachother really. No one within like 6 seats of us. They had an usher on every staircase - you pulled your mask down to eat and drink, put it on when done. The ushers were on it too, if you left your mask down for like 2 mins without a bite or eating, they were on ya. Was great to see, and super entertaining to see those who got offended by it.

Bathroom lines short, food/beer almost instantaneous. Was a really great time.

So Christopher Letang did his best to blow that game lastnight. Can't figure out for the life of me how he can be so bad but be considered so good?? 🤷

Boneheaded plays. That's been the gripe since his beginning. All or nothing type decisions for no reasons, or his favorite, lose his temper and get mad and start to act like a complete moron.

He'll cost us a playoff game, as he does every year.

His mental game has been the thing keeping him from being a perennial Norris contender.

Yeah, he's been on fire. Been a nice pickup.

That Tom Wilson thing from the past week was entertaining. In a single game, the dude got an assist, goal, fight, GM fired, President fired, and a 250k fine for the Rags all for 5k. What a deal.

Tom Wilson took some knee to knee contact lastnight. Maybe it's blown up or atleast hurt enough that it keeps him out for a decent amount of time. It's a shame that the NHL let the game revert back to the old "eye for an eye" mentality. Oh well, PLAYOFFS start in 6 days. Can't wait. GO PENS!!

Let the hand wringing begin. Out of those 3 teams, IMO, Boston seems like the biggest problem for Pittsburgh. These Pens' track record isn't exactly stellar vs Bruins. Let's get through the Isles, hope Caps win that other series and go from there. My biggest gripe is , we have to wait a whole week for this shindig to jump off. 😫

Another thing is , everyone is all sweaty over Conner McJesus getting 100points. If he was in the Mega Metro, I'd venture to say he'd be in that 70 to 80 point category. Now I might have a "homer" mentality, but Sid is still Sid and who has McDavid ever beaten?? jus ask'IN....

Pens don't have a stellar track record against the Isles in the playoffs in early rounds recently, either.  Hopefully they get off the snide this year....

What are all ya'll thinking of playoff libations this year?  I haven't thought about it much, yet.....but willing to try out some new stuff if given the chance....I have a whole mixture in the beer fridge that needs gone through as I haven't been getting on it very much lately...need warmer weather and more yard work to kick that into gear....hoping for some Pens playoff games in the evenings on the pool deck......

Right now, the line-up includes Miller Lite, Stella, SA Porchrocker, Warsteiner, Shiner Bock....and a bunch of Christmas leftovers......plus 3 or 4 diff. kinds of Gluten free beer for the wife...

I've had some of the PorchRocker, pretty decent stuff.
I'll be looking for some Sours or something to drink during the games. Wife got me one randomly at a bar a few years ago and they are tasty. If not a sour, I'll likely be drinking a PBR or something.
