Try tying the Madam X with the appropriate colors. It'll splang 'em!

Years ago I tied this pattern and it worked really well - for both trout and bass: Spun black deer hair palmered orange saddle hackel trim the top and bottom of the fly so it is flat. It will float all day. The vein in the cicada is orange. Very simple and productive pattern.

Hi Pgh Kid, might give it a try Did you shape the body before you palmered the hackle? How much larger was the hackle to the body and did you clip the hackle top and bottom to?

FFP has an new article on the cicada. I think everyone believes across the state is going to be plastered with these things. They are NOT in all areas of the state this year.

I'm very familiar with the terms "RUN AND GUN" and "FISH ON!" "They're in here I can smell 'em"

in the fly book 'Flies for Trout' there is a pattern called the Stalcup's Cicada. HOOK; dry fly, 2x long #8 THREAD; black BODY; black poly yarn WING; pearl crystal flash over which is white calf tail over squirrel tail dyed orange. (these are tied on like a caddis wing.) BULLETHEAD AND COLLAR; black deer body hair, tied in reverse . (tie in the deer hair about a 1/4 or so behind the hook eye with the tips facing over the hook eye. then fold the deer hair back over itself and tie off which will make a bullet head. the deer tips should extend to about the hook point.) LEGS; black rubber hackle tied in at the collar where you tied off the deer hair it resembles a caddis dry only on a larger scale.

2008 (2025) XIV Adams, Bedford, Berks, Blair, Centre, Clearfield, Clinton, Cumberland, Franklin, Huntingdon, Lackawanna, Lehigh, Luzerne, Lycoming, Mifflin, Montour, Northumberland, Perry, Potter, Schuylkill, Snyder, Tioga, Union, and York Counties; last emerged in 1991 These are the counties listed for this years Brood 14 hatch. Not the same as the one from 2004, it's not nearly as widespread. I was actually working with Hoover that year and came up with a pretty effective pattern. I was also told by Scott Loughner that they were catching carp and walleye on cicada patterns in 04.... http://www.ento.psu.edu/extension/factsheets/periodical_cicada.htm I think the most important parts of a cicada pattern are the variegated black and orange bellies and something that goes SSSPLAAT when it lands!!
