Took my Army buddy out on Erie last weekend, put a few walleye in the boat Saturday. Sunday we only managed to catch one before we got chased off the lake by the NE wind. We were out in 65 FOW, running dipsys divers with harnesses down to about 25-35 feet in the water column.

 Is this believable?

100%

Actually not that uncommon for this time of year to get a photo with several bucks of that caliber from a well managed property.

I think a lot less roadkills happened, in general, in 2020, due to the pandemic and people staying put.  I know more people were out hunting but I think many less were taken out by vehicles.  That's my story and sticking to it!

Great points.  This might be a pretty dangerous year in terms of road kills and wrecks caused by deer.  Probably something to keep stored in the back of your head while driving in the next few months until hunters are able to thin the herds.

I was thinking about your second point of more hunting, which was definitely the case fishing, so assume hunting as well.  But it is much easier to fish than hunt.  Deer hunting isn't something that I think most can just casually pick up and have much success.  There are only so many deer in the public game lands too, which I would assume more new hunters are likely going to those public game lands.  I would imagine the new hunters of last year, likely didn't put too much of a dent in.  Many are likely done with it after spending hours in the woods with only seeing other hunters everywhere and likely having to take cover every hour or so when someone decides to shoot or 5 guys shooting at the same deer...

Got home from our 2 dayer last night. Monday was a bust. Bite was tough and wind didn't cooperate. Tuesday was better early for weather. We took the jaunt out of NE and hit the mountain. Fished 40-50 down over 80-85FOW. Ended up with 6 before she started to blow west and kick up 2 n 3s. Hopefully September provides some decent conditions. I'd like to get out to that deep another time or two.

Fished the Mon on my brothers pontoon on Sat. Aug.28. Caught a few bass on a bigger Hot-n-Tot. Downsized to a smaller Tot and caught a nice walleye.

Weather has not been cooperative. Tried to hit the river near whitsett on the kayaks today and we got poured on then got chased off the water by thunder and lightning. Only got 2 small bass.

I also floated cedar creek to west Newton Wednesday morning and it was a scorcher. Got a couple bass in some shady spots but there was just no escape from the sun. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky until like 2pm.

I’m also hoping September is better weather. I’m in the process of putting a casting deck, some hatches, and a floor on my 14’ tin V hull. I’ve been wanting to do something like this for years, and I finally have the right tools and some dry storage to make it work. I should be about done in another week or two and I’d like to get it in the water for some fishing in September and October, and maybe even hit one of those boat in campgrounds at Kinzua. We had a pretty good weekend camping up there last July.

Do you have a motor for the V hull? Prop or jet? Can you get through the rapids on the Yough?

I’ve got a 12’ v that I haven’t taken out in years. I launched it once at Cedar Creek about 8-9 years ago. I was too scared of stranding myself to take through the skinny water. Kind of limited sticking to the pool alone.

I have a 9.9 prop motor for the boat. I don’t usually take it to the yough tho. I kayak or wade there. Although I also tried putting in at cedar creek once but I wasn’t really feeling it either. I really prefer fishing shallow rivers from a kayak

I usually take the boat to lakes- arthur, cross creek, wilhelm, kinzua… I haven’t taken it out much the last two summers because I’ve been way more into kayak fishing. But if I get it fixed up with the casting deck and whatnot, I’ll probably start using it more again.

I’ve actually been wanting to do this for a long time, but it was never really feasible because I stored it outside. Now that I keep it in a garage I can have a boat that’s more than just an aluminum hull and a few bench seats. I’m pretty stoked about it.

Sounds like a fun project.

I’m pretty sure a jet drive is needed for most sections of the Yough. There are definitely some areas with long sections of deeper water though. I have waded twice in the past few weeks. Only about 100 yard stretches that I could imagine a prop would work.

Fished below dam 3 on the Allegheny Saturday morning, caught 3 very small walleye and 1 small mouth. Called it a day at 9:30 because it was too **** hot.

We got lucky with the rain. Tied up at the Aquatorium and walked up to McDonalds. rain hit when we were inside. Went back to boat after rain and then caught fish. And yeah I did try to post some pics but couldn't figure it out.

Got the bug today, took the kayak up to west Newton, put in right above the bridge and paddled up a mile or two. Got all the way to that fast, deep pool. Got 6 bass in a couple hours, nothing huge but it was a nice evening for it.

Anybody have any strategies for fishing those deeper, fast pools in small rivers like the yough? I tend to stick to shallower areas with current and lots of breaks. I usually throw weightless senkos and finesse jigs, and I do fairly well. But I know there are fish in those deeper pools and the lighter baits I like to throw don’t always get down to the bottom. I got a couple today by casting into the current, anchored right up along the bank, but I can’t help but think I’m still missing something.

Not gonna be doing much fishing for the next couple days At least not on any rivers. Looks like the heaviest rain will be to the south and east of the city.

A friend of mine was vacationing in NOLA. He flew in last Wednesday before they knew how bad it was gonna be. He almost got stranded there because he couldn’t get a flight or a rental car…. finally booked the last bus out of town to Atlanta so he could fly back to Pgh from there… sat in traffic on a packed bus for 9+ hours with no food, water or toilets… finally gets to the Atl airport which was a total zoo because of all the evacuees from Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama… the flight back to Pgh was terrifying because of all the turbulence… he gets home and his car has a flat tire. pretty much the worst vacation ever.

Sounds like a great vacation...  Pretty bad when a flat tire sounds like the best part.

Rivers are going to be a mess.  The whole stretch of the Yough looks like it is getting pounded.  With it and the other rivers off limits, I imagine the lakes in the area are going to be crowded with Labor Day weekend.

Temps are dropping, so should help transition out of the dead of summer patterns.

So I bought marine carpet online and the color is way different than the photo. I didn’t like it at first but I’m gonna go with it anyway. I also think I can make it work it I paint the inside black. Is that gonna be crazy hot? The aluminum hull gets crazy hot already so I’m thinking it can’t be worse.

Carpet is kind of an ugly shade of blue, but it would look pretty good with black. The benches, floor, a small casting deck up front, and a small deck in the back will all be carpeted. The outside of the hull is beige but I don’t plan on painting it now because the paint is in pretty good shape.

Is this a bad idea? Am I going to end re-painting it?

I would go ahead with black or dark gray if you want to paint it. As you said, it gets hot already, though the painted surface may get as hot or slightly hotter. The upside is that if it is matte finish paint you won't have the reflective glare from it that you get from the bare aluminum. We used a roll on bed liner paint on the inside areas of a boat we redid (gray) and it worked well, especially on the floor areas we did, since it had a texture to it to reduce slipping.

I put SeaDek in my boat this year, its expensive ($150) for a 40" x 80" sheet. But it's easy to apply, and comfortable to walk / sit on.

In retrospect I probably should have looked at something like seadek or at least requested samples to see the color. But I think I can live with this color if I paint the rest of the hull black or dark gray.

Fisherlady- couple more questions: did you put the bed liner on a painted surface or bare aluminum? Did you brush any of it on as well as roll it? What brand did you use?

We used it on both surfaces, scuffed with scotchbrite first. We rolled it on. IIRC it was Rhino Liner.

I have a vinyl floor in my boat. I would never have carpet again. Although it does get hot when that sun beats down on it. It's very easy to clean. Just pull the plug and get the power washer out. We tend to make a mess dragging those worms. Not to mention gillin em and killin em makes for quite the bloodbath somedays. Buddy has an 86 Rebel that needs a new floor. Think wer gonna do it as a winter project this year. I will have to check into SeaDek. 👍

Anybody been hitting Arthur recently?

So I got the decks on the boat finished and now that it’s getting a little too cold to kayak the yough I’m trying to see if I can figure out some fall patterns at Arthur before I put everything away for the winter.

We put in a Mcdanels today and messed around up in the fingers for awhile to stay out of the wind. Around dusk I got one decent largemouth just off that shallow weedy flat by the cabins. Pretty typical Arthur day in my experience.

I might try to shoot up there again tomorrow afternoon for a couple hours after work. Looks like it will be warm and a little less windy.
