Steelhead book

Can anyone recommend a good steelhead fishing book?  Not necessarily a fly fishing book, but a book on all techniques for steelhead fishing?  Thanks!

I just got a signed copy yesterday.  It is a real wealth of information.  Besides the book I got to spend about an hour picking the author's brain.  Of course, that meant tying a totally new style of flies, which means getting a new vise, new supplies, learning a new tying technique and when the streams open up, a new fishing style....

I know Skip, but I have to blame it on someone....  I have a real neat tube fly vise and am learning to tie tube flies.  I can't wait to give them a try.

I have used swinging techniques in the past, but have not really refined them.  I started with a dead drift, old habit from the bait fishing days, and moved up to a high stick style nymph technique, which I found to be productive sometimes.  Adding a more intentional swing technique should give me even more in my arsenal.  The trick now is tying the "right" patterns...  Of course, experimenting and learning something new is what keeps this sport interesting.

    Skip,
You beat me to it.... Like Bug needs another new technique, or an excuse to tie something different.  What's next?  The two-handed underhand reverse dunk drift technique?  Of course he'll have to buy a new reel with more bearings in it than a Porsche.  It's just so he can drift fish the lake. . . . from Rt 5!

Nagy's a cool dude with alot of insight, his book is definetly key to becoming a good steelheader in Erie County.

he hooked me with some info about the tube fly tying setup too, its pretty darn awesome how you can use a small hook on a big streamer like that and not have the hook get all bent up as has happened to me before.  I thought they were cool when they first came out but really didn't see it going anywhere.  It is really cool.

    Loomis,

I agree that he is a very neat guy and what impressed me the most is that he really seemed to want to help me become a better fisherman.  I was very fortunate to have had about an hour of one on one with him in a fly shop where he showed me what I would need to get set up for tube flies, what materials to get, hooks, leaders to use, etc...  It was great to have been able to pick his brain for that time.

As for the book, I am only in the first chapter or so, but so far, it is good stuff.  I have jumped around in it a bit, and everything I have read is helpful.  I would recommend it to anyone who wants to become a better steelhead fisherman, especially to those of us, myself included, who think we are pretty knowledgeable.  It was a humbling experience to realize that for as much as I do know, there is a ton more that I still have to learn.

Good stuff you will love the book, especially about the weight/drift setup its really key. we will have to compare tubies when the time comes, im interested to see what you/anyone else comes up with as I am planning on using these alot for steelies and trout.

    Loomis,

For right now I tied up the same basic patterns I use on a regular streamer hook, woolly buggers and basic minnow patterns that have worked well for me.  I looked as the patterns in Nagy's book and I don't think I am ready to tackle anything like that at the moment.  The one thing I have found is that I will have to play with the length of the tubes a bit.  The few I put together I tied on a small diameter tube that was cut to about an inch long.  Before I spend a ton of time and materials tying up tubes, I want to take a few of these out and see what they look like in the stream and even more importantly see if the fish will hit them.

what are you using for tubes?

Nagy told me that a heavier tube will do the obvious, but he said that for low clear water to try a Hollow Q-tip, maybe a good experimental tube for length just to mess around and gauge your options, I think this would be a better trout pattern as I dont see a qtip holding up to a steelhead.

I bought a pack from HMH and there was some tube material came with the vise.  I have some copper and aluminum tubes as well, but I think for our streams I would like to try the plastic tubes first.  The water is not that deep and with a sinking leader I would think the plastic tubes should be fine.  After I use up the tube material I have now, I will have to seek a source.  I agree that the Q-tip might be too flimsy.  I have quite a lot to learn about this whole enterprise, but it should be fun.

    Bug and Skip,
Try some very small medical tubing.  Very durable and flexible and it adds realism to the bite.  **** I wish I could tie.  Everything I try looks like "lint on a hook"  (sometimes with wings).   And please don't ask I will never show, trade or swap anything I make on the fly vice.  I've tried and tried.  And right now I'm a little bit busy with some rods.  One in paricular that is giving me fits.  Maroon and gold wraps , , ,  who ever heard of such a thing?

Chris,  Is that Spay Rod the one you use to neuter cats on your back cast?   Sorry, man had to do it.

BTW It's all good>  I once heard a guy refer to them as Spray rods because you could "spray" your flies over more water, without accuracy.
