If it makes you feel any better, it was dog days two weeks ago too...  If you can get out really early or late, you can find some interested in playing.

True that.As I get older my wants are less. I'm perfectly content parking by a blow down and crappie fishing.Even if you do find some Stripers willing to bite it's not good to yank and crank em in this warm water.

I hear you.  Crappie are a blast.  I wish that I could figure them out in mid-summer.  I seem to know where the really small ones hang out...  I have a few early mornings in me to get into a little more action.  But definitely prefer the spring patterns, which I mostly missed this year from my motor.  Although, still able to fish with my electric motor, just a lot more limited.  I hate wishing the summer away, but the fall patterns are great.

We got into the Crappie good all day yesterday. All on plastic too. No live bait. The trick was to just fish the cover in 10 foot of water. Fished over 5 schools of therm before we called it quits.

Anything chewing at the lake?  I haven't made it up in a while.  Too busy and they didn't cooperate much the last time there.

Went on vacation to the NC crystal coast.  Clear blue water the whole time and the Spanish mackerel were cooperating rather well from the surf.  A lot like chucking spoons out for steel head.  Make a lot of jumps in the air to get off and slam your spoon like a small freight train (more solid streamline metal than spoons).  I landed maybe 1/4 of hook ups, lost a few right at my feet and had a slammer straighten a hook on me.  Similar in the acquired taste of steel head, with their distinct flavored meat.  Great on the grill and smoker.  I'm more of a fan of the whiter fish to fry.  I've learned to target what the water wants to give up while on vacation, rather than try to force fish that conditions are not right for.  I should probably do that a bit more at the lake...

I used to hit NC beaches every summer. Casting off the piers with Gotcha lures. Went in June one year and jigged up a bucket full of Flounder.

In the quick reply box at the bottom of threads open the "full version". Or use the "Reply to Post" at the upper left of the page. When you open either, there will be a paper clip attachment icon where you can upload photos directly from from computer into your post.

Glad ya had a good trip.  I always sucked at fishing the Atlantic on the east coast.  Never caught anything other than dogfish, skates and the occasional small blue.

Did you use Clark Spoons for Spanish Macks? Fished Arthur pretty hard on July 27th and got skunked. Did not see much of anything being caught that day.

Photo Bucket chopped everybody I'm thinking.

Try resizing your photos to 640 pixels or cropping out all but the most important details (may require several attempts) then use the [upload files to server] button (mine is right above the reply button when using my phone) to send the new resized file.

Orrrrrr (don't know if it will work) worth a try to "copy" a pic from your file and "paste" it on your page.

That is what I caught most on.  The first photo has a Clarkspoon - Shad jig.  Chrome jigs worked well too.

My daughter casted for hours with me for a Spanish mackerel.  She was determined to get one.  She even asked if I would wake her up at 5:30 to go to the pier.  Went there and I don't think a Spanish mackerel was caught the entire time out there...  She got that spade fish and a pin fish, which I think she was satisfied with.  We saw about 10 sharks.  One spinner shark doing some jumps about 20 yards beyond the breakers.  About 20 feet from a surfer...  Which had us both a bit sketchy about swimming that day.  She fished more with me this trip than she has in the past five years combined.  She asked if I'd take her out on the boat soon too.  My son casted for a little too, which was great.  Probably the best part of the trip was them showing honest interest in fishing.  I'm probably going to hold off on the boat thing until the bite turns on a bit.

Re: Lake Arthur 2019 2019/08/07 14:34:23 (permalink)
Did you hop/jig it back the Shad jig or cast it out and burn it back to the beach? Never used one of those before.

Down in Florida gulf side piers, we would do real good with a egg sinker above a swivel, then about 8-10 foot leader down to an Original Clark Spoon. You weren't allowed to cast overhand, so it was bit tricky to cast underhand, and not wrap line around pier support poles. Cast it out as far as you can, count it down for few seconds and wind it in as fast as you can. We would do quite well with that method. Every now and then would get cut off by a Spanish. Had to use fluro leader or they wouldn't touch the spoon.

For some reason, the NC and VA piers, locals preferred to use Gotcha Plugs or a Mackerel tree. But I used my Florida method to catch my largest ever Spanish Mackerel at the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier.

Re: Lake Arthur 2019 2019/08/07 15:05:02 (permalink)
Just straight retrieve.  I found to not burn it back, but a fast retrieve.  For years, I would do the burning with no luck.  It ends up making the lure spin or skip on the top.

Funny thing...  I had one set up your way (with the original style and inline sinker) for my daughter to use off of the pier.  She wasn't too confident using a gotcha and leaning over the rails.  She got a little too close to a light post (guessing why they don't allow overhead casts).  She smacked it and the spoon went flying.  It almost hit another young girl.  She was done casting after that.

When fishing from the surf, most fish that I caught were in knee deep water (3-4 fee with the waves).  I used to wade out to that deep and would get pummeled by waves.  Seeing them jump in that area, I figured, why not try fishing from ankle deep water and let the lure work it's way in the wash.  Couldn't believe that I was hooking up at first.  Definitely just the conditions.  I am sure they aren't always in that close.

Great pics!  Great to hear about the kids!

One mid morning in Mississippi this summer at high tide, I had waded out about 75 yards and two dudes standing on the sand were into redfish about 10' out from shore.  They got 2 keepers (18"+) and a bunch just short of that.  I've found that those saltwater predators will chase bait into some surprising places.

Love that part of NC coast....We have stayed in Emerald Isle and Pine Knoll Shores several times.  Schools of macks would always be working just out of casting range from the beach...esp. in the AM's...

Should have had your shark gear and soaked a couple of those bluefish on the bottom, as far as you could get them out.  Catch some of those spinner sharks!  Those guys are relatively harmless....put on a great show when you hook them up....definitely live up to their name....and they tail walk too.

Usually good crabbing down there on the bay/sound side too.

We only fished on an inshore charter at Hilton Head for 1/2 a day last week.  Did well on lost of small reds and flounder and my son pulled the hook @ at the net on an oversized red and had a 4' lemon shark on for about a min. before it cut him off.  He caught the only legal flounder too so it was definitely his day.

Beautiful weather down that way last week....wish I was still there.

One thing that I am not a fan of the area, is limited sound access.  We usually do Hatteras Island, where there is literally hundreds of miles of public access.  But, I do like the shallower surf in that area much more than the beaches that drop off instantly.

I am completely fine with the smaller game fish.  Luring in sharks to where kids swim, just doesn't sound like a good risk/reward to me.  I know they are there regardless.  I would rather not taunt them with a snack and a hook in the face, possibly beached for a photo opt.  I would feel too guilty if a kid got bit in that area, if I was actively fishing for them.

Night time fishing for the toothies....

If you ever stay at the Ocean Club condos, they have a nice pier on the bay side you get access to.  Crabbing is good, fishing is ok...but it is a good entry point to wade fish the shoreline.
Their pools are nice too and a beachfront condo, at least the last time we were there, were pretty reasonable.

Emerald Isle boat ramp has good crabbing too but you have to catch the tide right.
