X Caddis

Does anyone think that it matters completely whether you use a dark olive, tan or brown Z-lon for the shuck? Or should you keep the shuck similar to the body?

Also some people say they use antron instead of z-lon. Does anyone prefer one over the other?

If you wanted to be technical, go with something in the same color family as the body, but several shades lighter.

For color, exactly what luvinblugills said and as far as antron over z-lon, z-lon is much more crinkled and the fibers are less compact than antron. If you only have antron at the moment and dont want to spend the extra money for additional z-lon then just use your scirrors to score the antron but its for you to decide which material you like better.

If you ever see a caddis pupal shuck drifting down stream take a close look at it. They are pretty clear. i usually use zlon, with no color, just plain zlon.

What I want to know is how do you strip the fur off of the quill with an eraser?  Do you get the same type of quill that you get when you buy just quills from the store?

I assume your reffering to  making a stripped quill body? The eraser is for peacock herl and not the hackle quill body you buy in the store. The hackle quills are made by stripping off the hackle fibers then soaking the stems in a water solvent solution for about ten minutes this is why it is easier just to buy them.

Thanks for the input fellows. I usually use Z-lon but I have heard of people using antron for the shuck. I would venture to guess that either one would probably work b/c they are pretty similar to look at.

I use Z-lon too.  Make sure you don't use too much.  You really only need a few strands.

D-nymph, What is a few strands like two or three or three to five?

    5-10 for a #16

    around 10+ for a #14 is what I do.

I donn't actually count them though while tying.  You get the feel after a few flies.  And if you feelt here is too many, you can always trim it down.

You want it to be sparse.  If you use too many strands it will not have any translucence like a real schuck.

i found a drafting engineers eraser works better than a pencil eraser, it's softer. also i know they tell you in books to soak the hackle stems before wrapping but i have yet had to do so and believe you me, i tie a ton of quill body flies and they havn't split on me.

Forget the quill bodies and learn to wrap biots, they look 10 times better.
