Knot Wars

I thought this is pretty intresting. North American Fisherman has a segment they call Knot Wars. They put two knots head to head on a machine that pulls until the line or knot fails. At the instant of failure the machine records how many pounds was pulling on the line.

Pretty cool. I've been looking for a good superline knot.

That was cool!  Its reassuring to know that the knot that I almost exclusively use, the palomar, is so strong!  Thanks for the links!  Knots with the line going through the eye twice are hard to beat.  The added plus for this knot is that its so simple to tie.

Yeah I saw those the past couple weeks on vs on saturday mornings.  The palomar is a hard knot to beat along w a trilene knot.  They were both breaking the line before they broke the knots..

I have almost always used the improved trilene for almost everything, I like the palomar, but it can get tough with small hooks and or crappy line. IMO

Are these good for tippet too? That palomar looks very nice and simple to tie.

I don't use tippet too much so I can't answer that but, I think they are using the 15 lb test so that you can see the line easily and the line wont break as fast so that you can see a longer test. Just my thoughts.

For larger hooks, I use the the palomar or trilene knot.
    Both work well for me.

However, as MuskyM  mentioned, you can't get the line thru the hook eye twice with small flies commonlly used for Erie steel

No choice but to use the improved clinch knot

I agree with genieman.  Trying to tie the palomar with a #16 nymph can be a challenge, especially with freezing fingers....

A little off topic, but have any of you guys ever use the eye threaders?  I just got some this fall and it helps a lot with the tiny flies.

I know what you mean genieman.  These little threaders will fit in you fly box.  The ones I have seen are designed to hold up to 5 or 6 flies.  You thread the flies on before you start fishing and as you need them you just put your line through the end of the threader and pull the fly off.  With eyes getting worse as I get older I have found the threaders a real help for the small flies.

That is a good link.  All of those knots are useful and not difficult to learn.  I use most of them.

Palomar is undefeated, it beat the 1982 Worlds Fair Knot.
They said today on the "show that if you have a knot that you think can beat the Palomar, send them an email."

Id bet $100 it couldnt beat the bimini twist. The bimini twist is the ONLY knot that is actually stronger then the line itself, zero percent chance of the knot breaking if tied right.

    Whats their email?
