Berkley Vanish

Just bought some berkley vanish 6# flourocarbon.  It gets mixed reviews from what I've seen.  Anyone have an opinion?

My wife said I golfed too much...so I started fishing.

Weak knots, easily abraided, snaps at any point after an hour's use, and is the worst fluoro JUNK I've ever used!!!

other than that it's fine and comes in a pretty, blue box

well i have a different opinion I think its pretty crappy too but I think the segar line is so much worse i hve never had line twist like that stuff does and get weak so quickly.  Alot of guys swear by this line but I cant figure out why.  Vanish isnt great but its the best flourocarbon i have found so far.

There are better lines on the market.  As Genie said, it has problems.  If you change it up on a regular basis, it is not too bad.  I have used a wide variety of line over the years, and the Vanish is not one I would choose as my go to line.

I just got some of the new McCoy and it seems to be as good if not better than the Mean Green.  I would recommend the McCoy lines.  They are tough, hold good knots and have a reasonable abrasion resistance.

I have very little experience trying different lines and normally wouldn't respond to a question that requires a broader knowledge basis, but there's one thing I know.  Vanish is junk!  I don't know why but I actually gave it 3 tries.  It stayed on the spool well and had low memory.  I loved the visibility above water but it snapped like nothing!  Upping the lb test didn't seem to matter.  It breaks so easy!

Loaf, anytime I've spoolled my spinning reels with "any" fluoro, i wasn't happy.

if i feel the need for fluoro, I'll tie on a piece to my mono spoolled spinning reel

I've found Segaur's Carbon Pro to work best for me as tippit material

Truth is though, I've all but jumped off the fluoro band wagon.
I find line diameter/test weight has more to do with catching "tight lipped" fish than some "supposed" invisable line

To be quite candid, its junk IMO.  It twists up like crazy, kinks easily and the knot strength is not very good.  I have found P-Line to be the best for the money thus far. $6.99 to $8.99 for a 300 yd. spool at****s.

I've used tiny swivels in the past.
    but
1.) I hate to tie knots
    and
2.) that's one more knot in set up for a possible break.

Playing fish puts stress on the weakest link in the system.
The weakest link in the knot.
    less knots the better imHo

i use a line to line knot some one shared here a few years ago.
It's secure, fast and easy for a ten thumbs guy like myself

Best I can describe it, is a quadrouple square knot

as far as spooling up a reel,go with P-Line,then tie in a tippet of Seagar carbon ice, just as good as the Grand Maxx,just.001 larger.

    I wouldn't sweat it, Chrome.
maybe you'll be one of the few that likes it.

Since you already bought it and it's on your reel, I sure wouldn't change it now

PS.. for the record, I've never used Transition.
    Only their regular Vanish

Why would you spool your entire reel with floro? Its best used as a leader only. If you are using it for steelhead use siglon in 10-14 lbs test. There is another floating mono out there not in the hot colors if you are afraid of that, I dont know the name of it though. If you want an exact way to line up pm me and I'll take the time to explain it.

I fish about 75% of the time with vanish on my center pin.  I use a 4 foot lead in 6lb line.  I've broke off less than 10 fish out of a few hundred hooked this year.  If you tie the rite knots with this line and make sure it seats down good, its not bad line for the money.  I use regular seagur the rest of the time, the one advantage is it is a thinner diameter and equally as strong.  I strongly suggest against using a straight flurocarbon for a mainline.  Its much cheaper and fishing friendly to go with a mono lead and then tie in the a micro swivel.  Plus you can fish a heavier mainline such as 8lb which will hold up better.  I fished with a buddy last weekend who used a straight fluro and I counted atleast 10 breakoffs and I don't think more than one was justified.  I broke not a one and for the most part horse the fish to the bank.  To each their own, but I've had good luck w vanish and seagur... P.S.  try a palomar knot or trilene knot for your connections, i think you will like the strength of these...

All I use is vanish for my leader ,no tippet, just straight 8lb.test and have lost few fish with break offs. Must test your knot to be sure you don,t have a break off.

I use seagar 4# and never had a line snap or knot issues. The only line snap I had was on a snag. The thing you need to worry about is your rod. The right rod can use any line on it. Also it depends on the angler.  As long as he or she isn't trying to horse them in you should have no problems. 2 of my buds use the Berkley Vanish 6# and have no issues.  The thing you need to do is to pick a line and try it. If you like the feel and action of it keep it if not try something else.  Guys will always have bad things to say about everything that didn't work for them, but might work fro you. So my advise is to try a line and if you like it and you catch fish on forget what everyone else says.

Mixed reviews? I'd say the reviews were 90% unfavorable, 5 % neutrAL,
5%  undecided. This time of year, you might use it to seal the trash bag you put it in. Make sure to use a trilene knot.

The reg. Van. I had mixed results with it. I've used the Van. Trans. for the past 2 seas. with nothing bad to say. I like the visibility purdy good.

Even caught a 44.5" King that had alot of fight on 6lb. test this year. With any line while fishin a rocky bottom I'll check for nicks about every 5 min. & cut as needed. Tie a good knot spit on it set drag & check for nicks often & you should be good.

Oh yeah, don't forget it can only be spooled onto the reel one way

Here again it's whatever you like to use. One may think its junk, another may love it. Personally i think its garage but thats just my two cents. I used to for years use nothing but spider wire mono in 8# main line, then drop it off with a 3 ft piece of fluorocarbon line, i like to use Rio fluoroflex. Then this year i try-ed a new line SiglonF and i swear by it. I have used McCoy mean green before and had good luck with as well.

    That's a great point, Crappie.
Not just Vanish, but any line spooled on a spinning reel.

    A couple things that cause line twist and bird's nests;

1.) cranking a spinning reel with the drag peeling line or not recovering line.
2.) loading it the wrong direction off the spool

    For those that don't know;
The way to determine to correct direction off the spool, is to lay the spool on the floor.
Crank a half dozen-dozen or so revolutions, then dip the rod tip toward the spool on the floor.
if going the wrong way, the slack line will tangle on it's self like a pretzel.
Simpley turn the spool over and crank a dozen more revolutions and dip the rod tip again.

One  way off the spool will have MUCH less tangles than the other.
Doesn't matter if it's fluoro, mono and any "wonder line" de jour.
All spinning reels should be spooled that way.

One more mention about fluoros I've observed.
after some use ,maybe an hour, maybe more.
    (your milelage may vary)
They lose their clear color and get a "milky" look to them in spots or  whole sections.
That's when the problems start with poor knots and breakage anywhere along the line

I keep hearing that Vanish Flouro is junk. I fished 2 weeks ago & landed 14 nice steelies on the same piece of 4# test Vanish leader. I broke the leader myself while removing a the hook from the 14th fish. This spool of Vanish has been in my vest since last year & still performs well. I use the Berkley knot with about 5-6 wraps around the line. If you tie good knots & set your drag properly, you won't have any trouble using it. I only use it for leaders, I use mono on my reels (Berkley smooth casting).

P-Line is pretty good for the money.  Never had any luck with Vanish.  Never tried the Transition so maybe it has improved on the regular Vanish.  You have to lubricate the knot really well with all fluoro lines.  The friction of cinching the knot up can really weaken them, even more so than reg. mono.
