10-15,16,17

Got in with a friend and my youngest son about 11 am Monday to clouds and sprinkles.
Hit upriver area I like and found Kings all afternoon. A mix of runners and residents.
Tuesday was nice and partly sunny and we went to the same spot with Kings all day long.
Wed- same spot -cloudy and sprinkles with Kings till bout 10 am and then it slowed quite a bit but some still there.
It was new and old Kings for 3 days but on Wed Am Steel came in nicely as well.
Not a huge run by any means but about the best I have seen there in a few years -fish around us most all the time.
That said for most of the river there didnt seem to be the kind of fishing we enjoyed according to dinner talk from others.
The somewhat limited run this year has pretty much run its course barring a miracle.
Tues evening trip to see the estuary found No fisherfolks whatsoever and only one fish surfaced far out.
Compared to past Mid Oct trips seemed fewer guys fishing and the lots only had a dozen or two cars each day--- including a drive through the ballpark ( was very surprised)
Boats were ganged up 3 to 4 at a time in some small holes upriver with clients lined up on shore casting a way- kinda said IMHO the fish were up top and the guides were making the most of the upper float.
Actually a really GREAT trip. Feel we caught a pod of spread out runners ( by pure luck) that lasted a day or two mixed with the fish already there.
VERY few beds sighted and only two were active --VERY VERY few deads around compared to any normal year.
Think we hit it just about as well as possible for this season.
Woulda been happy with what we had even in a great season -so it was really special- not my normal luck -LOL.

Twobob was up, too bad you didn't cross paths.  I would have been but I pulled my left shoulder, hoping to intersect with the chromers next week.

Thanks for the report. I'd like to have been there this week, but no go. End of month for sure for 3 days.  I'll be so off my game, I doubt I could land a steel.

Fichy--Only saw one or two Steel on the first two days.
The pod on the last day was far more numerous and came in for a couple of hours mixed with Kings.
Hope it signals a change in their population - buttt coulda just been a pod.
We will see as the season goes on but it seems time, in the general ebb and flow, for their numbers to begin an upswing.
They all seemed to be around the 5 to 8 pound range.

Just got home from my trip, was there Tues thru Friday.Fished the fly stretches entire time.As said lots of Kings with a few Ho's mixed in.Very few Steel up there and I did n't see any personally but talked to a few that said they saw a few. From what I saw and heard there are quite a few down river.DSR reports are saying good Steel fishing down there.
Anyway I had a good time hooking up on the Salmon and had some epic battles but did n't land many, but I could care less if I land them, its the fight I go for and I had  my fill of thatI did see a lot of spawning happening.

My group hooked into several steelhead over columbus day weekend down on the DSR.  One guy only caught steelhead over a two day stretch.  I only saw one coho caught over 4 days.  Kings and steelhead were the primary species.

Glad it was a positive trip, Jack. Thanks to you and RG for the reports. Hopefully I'll have one after next weekend. I hate to go on weekends, but at least I have part of Monday thrown in.

Feel the same way about catching Kings. Not how many I beach ( no net) but  just enjoy the fight. No more chasing them up and down- just play them and if they head on down  too hard--SNAP

Interestingly yesterday DSR reports very fresh bright Kings coming in and says there has been no  King 'big run' as yet this year. Figured that meant  a bigun on a given day.
My  perception throughout the season has been one of a bunch of nice pushes but never a HOT day. Generally its over now except for some stragglers  for a few weeks- some years more than others- but ----who knows.

Reporting up there has come a long way from the old' every day is spectacular and epic' kind of trolling reports and frankly I now believe them when they report.
Yes- IMHO -no real epic hard hours long extravaganza  has happened but the constant pushes add up too.
Butt -do the silly fishes have a late trick up their sleeve this time ??  lol.

Got a couple bright silver kings in altmar this past weekend, so it seems like the run has been nicely spread out, it would be great if that trend continued, but it could go right back to the big blow up run and then dead fish stinking up the river

Just got back from the oak... I am now hooked. May my bank account forgive me.

Landed a few Kings, biggest was right before we were going to leave to start heading back home. A 27-Pound hen, in great shape too. I did lose a nice looking brown down stream and I'm still kicking myself for a very poor hookset I did on it. Managed to land a few other nice browns, but wish I landed the larger one earlier in the day.

I did well on egg sacs. And caught the two smaller browns on red blood dot with a red suckerspawn below it. Had a few fish landed using beads as well.

Was a great trip for me and my friends. I'm sure I'll be back up one more time to try the browns and steel again.

We just did three days in P-town, fished a lot in middle river and just above town, town was too crowded.  While there were quite a few salmon around, it was mostly male zombies hanging on well used gravel, active spawning appeared to be pretty well along.  Nothing day 1, one steel for me early day two, lost quickly, 2B had a large fish right below the Pineville ramp, he lost it on the second fast run downstream,  2 steel for me and one for 2B on Thursday, none to hand however.  It looks like the cessation of heavy spawning will cause at least some of the steelhead that have been in residence down in the Kingdom to run upstream to us commoners!  So for those of you who like fast speeders over fat trucks, it is on!

Thanks for the encouraging report, Lucky.  I have some favorite mid-river spots that just might be semi-available with wind and  rain.    My chance of landing any is darn slim, though.  Hooking, maybe.  Something to keep me nervous on the drive out.

    OOOPS wrong thread- oh well--
Did OK with Fall Turkey- took a nice hen after stalking a flock for a while early last week. Always found them fun to stalk in Fall.
Went back a day or two ago sat in a nice spot along a rock wall and called- midday- they answered right away and were coming in through a heavy swamp- couldn't see them yet but could hear peeping coming my way- they were close. With my 71 year old hearing--darned close -lol.
Suddenly heard a tractor behind me and looked up behind my rock wall spot and saw my Uncle ( he's old too- actually older) making a turn while brush hogging the field behind me.
    Game over---
    Oh well thats hunting-----
Just happy he and I are still out there doing what we do..

Hope ya did well Charlie-reports are getting few and far between around here.

Just got back, left early as it was raining for day 3 straight.  Hooked some steel , some cohos, only landed  some white tipped kings. Wasn't on fire by any means, but had some good battles. People were very pleasant, no hassles at all. Steel are moving up river, salmon are getting very thin, carcasses everywhere.  The DEC fish checker said 6 out of 22 parties asked had registered steel, all large. The ones I hooked were 10+ and beasts.  It was a slow day on Sunday for people swinging in mid-river from those I talked to.  The lack of the dreaded cookie cutters may not be such a good sign.  The fish checker, who has been doing her job for a long time, said the DEC is concerned.  Tell you the  truth, I wish I could have got a nice 6-7 lb. fish that would have given me a chance to bring it to net.  Flesh flies with bunny and a  silicone green weenie were the  tickets  to the bullet train for me.  Maybe T-day  will be next  visit for me . I'm thinking I'll go during the day this year, I'm skipping the dinner part, I'll still be grateful to all the past ones.
It'll be interesting to see if some trout start filling in the void of the  salmon.  Boy, do I wish dearly I could have gone earlier. Every time  it was time to fish this year, I had a chain attached to me.   Glad those that went did well.  Thanks again to the reports from everyone, may all that go do well.

When I was there a couple of weeks ago never knowingly hooked a Steel but saw many scooting by-cookies.
Also saw some 'caught' and they too were cookies.
Musta just been that particular pod that came busting through for a couple of hours on that day.
Glad to hear of bigger ones but understand the 'issue' if they are predominating the run this season.
Glad ya hooked a few Charlie- too bad about the rain.
Hey- also glad to hear of some Hos.

Best sight of the trip- a strange disturbance in the water that turned out to be a half drowned weasel hauling  what might have been a trout- something around 18" that was close to the size of the weasel.  It hauled its catch into a  rock lair. I didn't think weasels ate fish, but on the SR, anything is possible.  The Tailwater expansion dropped my freakin jaw. Vail, Co. comes to  Bug Tussle, NY.

Nice report Charlie. Good to hear some are getting tugs instead of shrugs like myself.
Last February the tailwater was putting a massive expansion together, heard it might also include a spa of sorts. I never woulda thought it would survive but it seems to be .
I also don't mind staying there . If we did 3 nights the price was below $90.00 a night and I can take that for a 3 night trip with my wife for whats offered and you never have to drive once your there if you want.
I'm paying that for a crappy place in a few weeks at hunting camp.

Haven't even looked as my fishing gear since June. Finally getting caught up on chores and packing my hunting gear together now.
Starting Friday, I'll have 3 weeks to do whatever I wish, woods or water.
If the freezers fill quickly, it will be water.
Sorry I have nothing to offer in the fishing dept and thanks to you all for sharing

Jack, I've watched lots of river and sea otters, this critter was not too familiar with being in the water.  It was like a skinny drowned rat. It might have been a mink.   HT, though I hate the loss of the river behind Tailwater, I just paid 112 a night for a plywood bed  and the usual uncontrolled heat and  no tables or chairs.  I'm going to look into staying  at Tailwater this winter if some deals arise.  It's now a member of the Hilton chain. http://www.oswegonews.com...ilwater-lodge-20171013

Fichy, I know my wife won't traverse the river or conditions. She may take a walk out back to their fenced in barrel but that's about it.
I've stayed 3 times, you have to hit their price point at the right times.
It's a pretty set up joint where you CAN walk in with waders to a heated special flooring over concrete. Wash and hang your waders in the wader room not worrying about a funk. Onsite fly shop and tying benches with unlimited supplies or Shoot some pool, play darts , grab ( expensive) food and listen to live music in the brewery.
A spa or pool would be nice, imo.
It's not something I can do always or often but if she is happy, I'm happy.

I'll be sleeping on a cot or plywood for the next 3 weeks.

Thanks for that, Gerry- I'm pretty positive it was a mink. Nancy's first thought , also.  It was a better sight than the Russian I saw in All Seasons that was wearing camo long underwear as pants.   No zipper, just the flap.  I guess he thought he was invisible.

NOT seeing any decent Steel reports anywhere as the season goes on.
My days of fishing them in 16 deg. temps and fighting snow to get to decent spots are long gone even when its HOT.
Those days were when I had my much missed place up there and aint spending a couple of hundred on a couple of nights in a cheap motel and getting past due food to experience freezing fingers for nothing lol.
That said if it was HOT fishing, I might be nuts enough to feel the urge, but not for fishing thats poor -at best.
Can remember using blue sacs and a light spin outfit in the Vines one Nov. day and hitting about a dozen in a few hours and throwing a little bug with the Switch one April in the same area hitting half dozen behind the same rock over a couple of hours- haven't heard those kind of reports in a LONG time.
Sure wish the ups and downs of Steel numbers would be UP a time or two while I can still do it.
    Memories are great though.

There are some fish there, but the weather has not been.  Wednesday PM it got a little warmer, and the area around the RT 52 bridge lit up, they had a lot of fish in the wires, and the bo's were also pretty hot.  Next day all three areas were dead as a doornail with the newly arrived cold.  With the forecast for miserable driving today, we played prudent and got out of there yesterday around lunch time, and got back to Rachacha just as it kicked off.  We only got about 6" here, but looking at the maps, I think P-town got hit pretty hard, and Wayne County got over a foot.  The roads are a mess, it would have been a really long drive back, and questionable if we would have even been able to drive to fishing this AM if we had stayed.

Excuse me for mentioning numbers a post or two back. I don't generally do that for any reason-good or bad.
Felt that recent conditions compared to long gone  'glory days' might have been worthwhile.
Those two situations weren't the norm even back then- especially with my limited skills-but the fact that they happened at all speaks to the fishery at the time IMHO.
Sometimes ya just remember the best you ever found it and whish it could happen again- just once.
Been going up over 36 years- some GREAT and some not so great - but always fun.
