Grass carp

Caught this big grass carp the other day. Wondering if they inhabit Lake Erie in great numbers. Fantastic fish to target during off season

Nice. What fly did it take? I've only ever had a couple of decent casts at grass carp. But I know a place I can find them if I'm patient enough.

If anyone catches a grass carp in the Erie/Presque Isle Bay watershed, please do not release it.  Grass carp are becoming more prevalent throughout the Erie watershed and investigations reveal that some of these fish are capable of reproducing.  In Pennsylvania, grass carp are used by some people for aquatic weed control in private ponds, but they must obtain a permit from the PFBC and purchase their grass carp from an approved aquaculture facility to ensure that the fish are triploid (sterile).

If you capture one in public waters, please DO NOT release it and report it to the PFBC (814-474-1515).  The PFBC's Lake Erie Research Unit can take possession of the fish and have it tested to determine if it is capable of reproducing and perhaps its origin based on otolith microchemistry.

Thank you for you help in this matter

Listen to Chuck, great dude! Thought those were an invasive. Thought they should be killed and not released. Take his advise about calling or such! Think someone several years ago got one bow fishing or something and thought it should have been state record, not cause wasn't common carp or what they be called. Almost an uproar over that one!

No harm intended, just making light of the juxtaposition of these two quotes!!!  I didn't know they were invasive either erieflyfish!

Yeah. The place I know that has them has a big steel grate over the outflow. Not a speck of weeds in that pond either.

They all come from a private campground pond. Not public water. Put in for weed control

Thanks man. They are not easy to catch. Many days, I sit for 8 hours without a take. But then you have great days. I recently caught two in one day ! During a sulfur hatch

Yea any you purchase from a hatchery in PA are sterile, but they will live a long time in the right environment plus they can really pack on the pounds and keep the place pretty clean of weeds.

All Carp in the USA are invasive species, common carp were introduced with the idea that they would provide a food source, that really worked out great didn't it!

Grass Carp, from Wikipedia:
"Fishing for Grass Carp
Grass carp grow large and are strong fighters on a rod and reel, but because of their vegetarian habits and their wariness, they can be difficult to catch.[15] Chumming with corn adds to success. They will eat canned corn, cherry tomatoes, and, despite their primarily herbivorous habits, will also sometimes eat other animals. Chumming with white bread, and a piece of bread pinched on a hook and floated on the surface works well, especially for pond grass carp. The IGFA World record for a grass carp caught on line and hook is 39.75 kg, (87.6 lb) caught in Bulgaria in 2009.[16]
Where grass carp populations are maintained through stocking as a biocontrol for noxious weeds, fishers are typically asked to return any caught to the water alive and unharmed.
The fish are popular among bowfishers where bowfishing for them is legal.
For eating, the fish may be steamed, pan-fried, broiled, or baked."
