We ended up with 5 stripers.
2 were in the slot of 28-40" and released. The others 28 and under are being eaten, as I type and the remaining will be soon.

Jack, it's possible and I have before. The probability is very small. All the fish I've put over the rail or my friends and family did this weekend were on bait. Herring or blood worms. Bait is now the focus, we bought frozen and cut it up. We couldn't catch any bait.

It's just the start of a great season. If the rain stays away, the fishing will be off the charts. My friends are residents of the river every day until the fish leave late May

Great  start, HT!  Jack, as you know, I've caught thousands of stripers on the fly, but only one from the Hudson and that took a night trip on a flat farther south of HT in my kayak. The Hudson is too deep and murky, even using 12" herring patterns and t-17 shooting heads  with a mono running line that works in ocean rips. There's a few flats, but they are inaccessible from shore. Long Beach Island  has fish  right now, so does the Susquehanna Flats  if you know someone with a Center Console.   I've got 4 weekends booked at campgrounds starting 5/18 on the coast. Can't wait.  Good luck with some cows, HT.

Thanks Charlie. Huge swing from only catching 1 fish all last season. The river is a muddy one. Far better looking conditions this season. Don't get me wrong, it's ugly out there but fishable so far and ahead.
Bait is scarce, good and bad. If you got it it's candy to the fish right now. If you don't, then your just out for a boat ride.
The other flip is when it's stupid with herring, your just 1 of thousands.
    Next sail, Wednesday

Tough grind tonight. Catching live bait is not happening yet. Relying on help from friends, supermarket clams and bloodworms.
    It's all working so far.
While the sun was bright, the winds and tide were not so friendly.
Smaller 3 year-old are prevalent and hungry.
Soon , very soon the big cows will be HERE

I was on the river for a short while trying for some smallies yesterday afternoon. The wind was awful!!!!  Is it a bad herring year, or is it still a little cold?

So far it seems like a sparse amount of herring. Everyone I know is struggling with them up here. The river temperature just hit 49 degrees so hopefully they will start.

Got a lot of rain Sunday. Made the mighty, muddy. Tough to catch bait.
Ended up with 3 stripers. No pictures as I left my phone in the truck.
I got a feeling today is going to be the day .

Good luck out there today! I am stuck at work...But summer schedule starting soon, so will be fishing Erie soon enough....though we have to go get the boat from a marina in southern Maryland this weekend or next, since it spent the winter there.

gave it a go from 6am till 9:30am. Wrong tide , incoming.
We only caught catfish and couldn't catch bait. Figured it was time to come home for a while and catch up on chores. Mowing for first time this year and it sucks..
Hope to get back on the river tonight.

Gotta take today off from fishing. I can say, the land won't stop swaying.
Here are my thoughts so far and my dislike of the slot size.
We have put 15 legal size stripers in the cooler. Legal means 18-28" OR over 40".
The fish we been catching are mostly in the 20-27" range. Same for others I know.
We keep 25-28" fish and releasing a lot of smaller or slightly over the 28" Mark.
Not seeing the number of slot fish that we did 2 years ago. Sadly back then, we caught a LOT of 32-38" fish that had to be released and seen many floaters coming down the river.
Personally, I'd like the state to implement a tag system of 5 fish each. You tag 5 anytime you want but once you use your fifth tag, your outta the game. No tag, no fishing.
I prefer, 2 or 3 hefty stripers to filet, rather than 15, smaller ones.

All that said, so far I'm seeing a lack of the spawning size stripers so something is a miss.

The ocean temps were and are 2 weeks behind. They came in late, so you may not have seen the main herd yet. By this time last year I had already caught a bunch, my first trip next week is making me nervous that I'm going too early. Of course, north of Boston is different, but this spring/winter dragged pretty bad.  I hope not all is amiss. The biologists I fish for  found very large amounts of one and two year old stripers   from the Hudson traveling as far as Maine  last year.  Good sign.  Normally they go no further than L.I. and Cape May.  The slot limit either worked or there was an anomaly in the amounts of spawners. Jury is still out. More will be coming over the rail, you'll get some cows. I do like your tag idea- thanks for  sharing your observations.
