Hot Lure on Erie?

Everyone knows it seems like there is a different lure, spoon, or color on Erie each year that walleye really key into, and it changes from year to year.

Any guesses on what that might be this year?

Or won't it matter this year with the record number of fish we are expecting to see?

I'm betting it won't be an issue this year...

But I do plan to start with a mother of pearl color spoon

Old school, I've got 40 year old plugs. 3 willie boxes full and a large bag of new ones still in the box,Long A's bombers, yea they still fill the box. They run true and still work. Maybe not as many fancy colors of today's knockoffs but still a great lure. NK's,pirate spoons still put plenty of fish in the box. I  can still limit out just dragging crocodile spoons. A lot of things work. Stuff worked in the 70's and 80's and still does today. I still can get fish on thundersticks, Bagley' and old Bill Norman's.

Spoons are always my best producer, every year. Blueberry muffin put in some work last Summer, but any color works, especially silver/green!

Never fished walleye in Erie but apparently this is a great year to start. Lookin forward to trying it ahht. Are there any good shore spots at certain times of year?

Casting plugs and spoons after dark in April and May along the trib mouths is your best bet for a shore bite. Not a whole ton of good land-based opportunities for PA Erie Eyes, unfortunately.

After last Summer and this upcoming season, I’m dreading how small the Steelhead runs will be in a couple years. Oh well, can’t be mad at the native species for thriving.

The steelhead run this year was the best in awhile.

When I was a kid working at a large sporting goods store the Erie Dearie was hard to keep in stock. How times have changed.

You can fish any of the accessible shoreline, creek mouths are better bets since smolts are favored food for the eyes. The walleye hang close to shore till mid June, depending on water temps. Most of May and possibly into early June will give you a good shot at shore walleye at night when they move shallow to feed.

Also, catfish will be close to creek mouths in early June, we have gotten some nice channel cats in early season, so even though you are expecting eyes don't be surprised to get into a cat or two. A good Erie channel cat can put a real hurt on lightweight gear...
