Paddlefish caught in the allegheny

Pretty cool story in the trib about some duuuud that caught a paddlefish the other day in the Allegheny.  I hope that population can find a way to thrive in the three rivers

Saw the pictures on A Facebook page.

Really cool catch of a lifetime.

    Congratulation to the Angler.

He got that up at Number 9. Fish Commission gave up stocking them back in '10 or '11 after not seeing them take root and populate. It appears that guy may have been in the river for a very long time.

Why would the PFBC stock fish that can't actually be caught?

They were trying to restore them in their original habitat.

It was said that they were native to the river. Being plankton eaters, they help keep the waters clean, and I hope they don't accidentally scoop up walleye or bass eggs, but couldn't possibly be any worse than carp, suckers or catfish. I've seen Gar twice in my fishing adventures on the Allegheny. They were cruising the river shoreline in less than a foot of water. They're carnivorous, but I sure wouldn't call them a game fish and they were stocked too.

I recently read an old PA Angler magazine article on the fish and game website from 1990s. A man proposed in 1980 to bring back all the species that were extirpated from Pennsylvania waters, that was still possible, they got around to the paddlefish program in the Ohio and Allegheny in 1991. I think there was a sturgeon study and they also expanded the brook trout's proliferation.

The old pdf's of the PA Angler mag are interesting, read one from 1935 too, walleye were called wall-eyed pike, pike-perch, and Susquehanna Salmon then. Very interesting stuff with diagrams of where to catch walleye on lakes and crude drawings of lures and plugs. There was a tongue-in-cheek article from Seth the redneck too about how common carp arent so bad. I guess even back then there was a movement to "kill them all"

Wonder how many people flooded that spot since haha. Seen the picture too, he was tossing rapalas. Completely coincidental.

So all the people beefin about the snag can shut up in the comments on facebook and on the tribune website. If your chuckin lures and catch a once in a lifetime fish accidently your****would do the same thing. Hell id have to bet atleast half of the fools would probably keep it to get it "mounted" not knowing it would be illegal.

Maybe the fish commish will re-evaluate the habitat and look more into the survival rate of them rather then abandon the whole program all together, definitely a neat fish.

Somebody sounds disgruntled. Wouldn't be because he has no "picture" of himself holding a (once in a life time fish) he safely landed and released.... "10-4"?

Perhaps gilliganjr should stop trolling fishing forums seeking "spotburns" and go out and actually enjoy the "true experience of angling... 10-4"?

PS. Don't forget your camera..... "Roger"?

good call.  you're right, i never fish.  im super disgruntled i've never accidentally snagged (illegally) an endangered fish and held it out of the water (illegally) for all to see.

what part of safely landed includes a rapala across the back?

not understanding the anger toward this fisherman. He was throwing a plug, accidentally snagged a paddlefish and took a photo. Big deal.

beentheresnagged that, ive had the boat out 7 times this month.  i dont fish for crappies, so its not too relaxing.

the anger isnt at the angler, its at the people slobbin his knob for the hero shots with an illegally captured species.

Lol i highly doubt it was snagged in the back.... since u fish all the time, tell me one time (other than gin clear, low water) that u could possibly chuck a normal sized rapala out and reel in a back snagged fish.

I am willing to bet money this fish was filter feeding in the wrong place at the wrong time and sucked in a rapala. Hence, the picture and story even making it this far. Your being ridiculous. Just shut up, stop trolling and enjoy the fact the dirty rivers are on the mend. The story is more than about the guy who caught it and how.
