1988 Mercruiser 305 engine for sale 205 hp

This engine is in the boat you can hear it run and go for a ride before I pull it. I will sell engine only (No bolt on parts example: Intake, Carb, Distributor, Power steering, Brackets, Water Pump, Etc.) Boat and engine have low hours. The engine is in a 1988 Thompson 240 runs great plenty of power. I'm removing engine to replace transom and will install a new 350. Only changing engine for better top speed. Boat tops out now around 34 mph on the gps. Looking to get in the low 40's with the 350 for smooth water days. Wayne 412-603-0070

bad transom on a thompson...go figure...might want to check the rear deck as well while you have that engine out....They are notorious for rotton floors in this year range as well...and if the transom is bad the floor might need work too....They had very poor encapsulated decks and transoms until about 1992.

If your looking for speed stay with the 305 and put on a 15x17 prop and get a valve job done you'll be around 210hp.  Which isnt that bad since the 180hp 4.3L is a very common setup on a 240 Thompson..  350 is only going to jump you 55hp at 4500 RPM's compared to the 305 (not a huge difference)

I can get over 42mph in my $hitty trophy with the 15x17 prop.  But switched to a 15x16 four blade for control reasons...pretty good compromise for thrust and speed...

I meant to put 4500.... sorry lots of 5's in that line

either way difference on a flat day on a 10 mile run with 10mph more is about 5min difference on an ETA...Id buy a few extra thousand worth of fishin equipment or a new kicker before i split hairs like that...just my 2 cents...

Either way wat do you want for the long block if you do this...i might be interested....always nice to have a spare...lol

I am worried enough about the one I built holding together at 4500 let a lone 5500, you had me scared that I was gonna have to go look for an extra 1000rpms.....

I run mine up to 4500 every now and again just a stock 5.0L...Did the heads and valves few years ago runs beautifully....very happy with the 5.0L performance.  V8's dont generate those advertised hp's 205hp (5.0L) or 260hp (5.7L) until they are reved up.  But i wouldnt mind having another block to tool around on just in case...

Even my 6.0L in my 2500 truck doesnt get all 353hp until 5400RPM according to Chevrolet...

Now if you were upgrading from a 5.0L carbed to a 5.7Mag fuel injection system that would be a huge upgrade on a boat...I just dont know if an 88 Thompson Fishermen would be worth dumping that kinda money into with the track record of their structural integrity....

If you have a bad transom and the boat is trailered...id be scared of stringers and the floors too.  The most common problem with the 240 Thompson is the rotton floor.  if you cut the transom out of this boat (which you would have to do for a transom repair)...look at the rear stringer grid especially around your motor mounts...

I have a great link floating around my home computer about how to replace a transom properly.  I know the main idea is many layers of balsa wood and epoxy resins...Ill see if I can dig it up.

I would think about an offer on my engine. The mechanic tha is pulling my engine and outdrive has experience in replacing transoms, floors, etc. I appreciate your advice. He said we have to replace the bulkhead and we will check the floors and stringers. I really like the way this boat handles the water and it has hardly any hours on it. Everything is very tight. The transomr rotted from where the previous owner installed trim tabs, fish finder, etc. He never siliconed anything. The boat was docked for quite a few years when it was new. CB do you get the emails I send every once in a while with jokes and stuff? Well talk again can't wait till spring!

Yep get the emails...im just not very good at responding...lol

Let me know if you end up ditching this engine....I dont know how much longer ill have my current boat but it wouldnt be a bad thing to have another motor lying around case I would need it.  Ill have to see what kinda modifications id need to make to a 5.0L Merc to make it fit my 5.0L OMC Cobra.  I dont think its much more than just the spline to the outdrive...

got a 88 thompson but its a 28 adventure you will see a little difference in plane speeds and will see a 5mph different set from a 305 you will also see that speed you do now at a lower rpm also look at a prop change 15.5 x17 will get you a faster plane and will hold at lower rrs i had a 16x16 on my cruisers inc heavy boat and everyone sat at the back go figure if you change pitch too much you will get top end and alot of rrs to get on plane  4200 rpm is a safe number or even 4400 another 100 rrs and shes screamin help dont hold her down the tow bill isnt cheap just a word of what i have seen peeps do to often cheers also rebuild dist and carb its due the dist wares out and require new bushing and springs if it has them
