I call quite a few bait shops and saw pic of fish Erie reports. There getting nice crappie and perch. I'm heading up at 6 am. I'm going to be in the head of the bay. The pier fishing is suppose to be good also. I post after my adventure.

Well boys it's time. Put the hurting on those hungry perch. 7 fow head of the bay. Me and my buddy used 3 scoops of minnows except for 5 lol. Set bobbers at 7 fow, small jig chartreuse and orange tipped with the minnow. Tried wax worms but only a couple takers. Got 2 bonus steelhead also. About 20 boats all pulling fish. Perfect day SW wind under 7mph. 60 keepers 9.5 "-12.5"  thew back twice as many 7-8.5" fish.  Feb.22 it's early,I'd go back this weekend but there supposed to be 20 plus mph winds. Hundreds of people shore fishing from the head to the stink hole. We did not fish for Crappie it took from 9 am till 3:30 pm to get the right size fish. If we where keeping 8.5 fish we could have been done early.

Haven't fished the Bay in years, but did spend many a day on it years back. Just wondering does it still close at sundown on the Presque Isle park side ? Do they lock the park entry gate still?

Yea,sunset. I'm heading back up next week, this weekend looks bad for wind and a fronts moving in then turning much colder. Mid week looks much better if the weather man is right.lol  I know it's weird but I'll only fish a west or SW wind.

Like Tuna, I was also lucky enough to get in on this early perch action. Two of us easily caught 150 fish, brought home 62, and that was a combo of Perch, Crappie, and Gills. Boy we got some nice gills. We were a bit shallower than Tuna and had to weed through a bunch of little ones, but it sure was fun for February.

ready2fish, how shallow where you fishing? I'm heading back up Tuesday or Wednesday and if the perch bite is good and a limit comes quick might fish for gills and crappie.  I'll fish for any panfish, but really like perch dinners, gills are next on the list. Another question where they pumpkin seeds or gills. Thanks

As of today 3-17-17 the bay has ice about 300 out past the cat tail island at the head of the bay. So with that said Ill be waiting a few days before returning to the perch jerking combat. I called two bait shops today and got good reports from one and the other one always a little short but one can understand. All marinas are also frozen, but local Jerkers are pulling perch in any open water. There just not many guy's fishing in that nasty cold weather. Hell another week of this weather and I'd be ice fishing on the bay.lol  Think spring,I need more perch dinners. Cajun deep fried perch,Pittsburgh slaw, and curly fries on the menu tonight.

Leaving in the AM,fishing by 8 am. Hopefully we can find a limit of perch. I'm doubtful they will be where we left them, but planning on starting there. I'll report on Monday evening for Tuesday morning.

Well did it again today, first stop Poor Richard's, Ken took care of me again  on emerald shiners and my buddy bought his first electric knife to cut those jumbo. It  took while but we limited out most fish where real nice  11"-13" but we got 6 toads between us pushing 2 lb or over. Ice was still on the head out to 12' so that where we did it. Only 3 boats counting us,everyone pretty much limited out,one guy needed two more but left. Another good trip 180 in three trips

Why is this your last trip? Afraid you cant catch them when they are all stacked up in the shallows ready to spawn?

Re: The Bay 2017/04/03 21:47:51 (permalink)
If you guys fished or hunted as much as your on the computer you'd be famous. Back to fishing 90 spawning easy " to catch stacked" perch came home not giants but solid 10" -12" fish,we went  though 12 dozen minnows and some Berkley gulp minnows. The Russian Rocket crush several nice 3 lb LM bass. Nothing for me and my son but perch.  Couple of mupers that know how to crush and fish anywhere. We where surrounded by locals some catching some not. I'm thinking, they should close walleye, perch, crappie, bass, musky, pike like till July 1st to give them a chance to spawn. " To Easy" As to perch fishing,I'd never fish the deep water summer perch that are stacked more than now because basically their dead when they come up from 68-'72' fow. No culling or releasing them then. Unfortunately or maybe fortunately I still own run a business for 42 years and it's time to make money. Any time from November 1st till April I'm available to fish and hunt every DAY. Speaking of hunting they should shut down archery hunting in the rut"to easy" especially if you still hunt in your stocking feet like some. Probably doe season and flintlock should also be shut down because the does are breed. It's a shame people don't believe, but I've never seen a pic from the greatest. It just a fish story without a pic.lol  I went to the Dr. on Sunday,he changed my meds, wow I saw 194 deer on the way home. And still got 2 hours sleep. Now I know why the PGC gave out 56,000 more doe tags for next year, boy those deer are making a great comeback after a record setting kill.  I'll be thinking of you guys every Friday, when I'm dinning on my perch dinners. Good fishing Captain Hook,at least I know one guy that can crush fish constantly and know what he's talking about. Catch all those Pymy eyes, this will be the first year in 47 years that I'm not going to do the night time wading and cast my Raps for those tasty Pymy eyes. The perch thing was just too good to pass up. Five trips 300 perch between two Mupers. My son and friend add 74  more. 374 total plus a bunch of easy to catch stupid steelhead that actually hit a bait, and didn't get lifted like most do. Thank you Pa. Russian for all the fun fishing out of your boat and the all day laughs. While I'm working crush those small mouths at the end of this month and May. There's doers and there's wannabes. Can't wait till November I'll be on vacation again.

Wow^

So I took my 7 year old son to see a Cavs game last night, then we stopped in Erie today. Fished south pier 2 hours in the afternoon, no one had a bite...until my boy got his first steelie! Nice fresh 7lb male. I think I was more excited than him. Then we got a bunch of little brownies.
Wish I had a boat, woulda loved to have got the perch for dinner, but so grateful to have been out today.

376, better hurry up on the perch, the males are running milt and the huge females are squirting eggs today. Without a doubt the best eating fish that's in freshwater. Congrats on your little boy's big steelhead, those brownies where stocked a couple weeks ago and should return as nice football's in a couple years. We hammered several steelhead in the bay this winter and spring. February and March. I don't need to fight the crowded streams. Everything waking up last week 3 northerns and a 5lb small mouth, this week my buddy slamming several 3lb LM. I priced lake Erie perch at a fish market up there. Any guesses ? $22.00 a pound. I've got a freezer full of gold. Unfortunately I live 2 plus hours away from Erie, and can't convince my wife to retire and move to Erie lol. If your interested in Pics go to Presque isle angler facebook. Click on visitors. You'll see what you've been missing. I hope you get back up to get your perch dinner.

Wow, sounds like the bay is on fire this year, great that you guys are doing so well already! I'll be interested to see how the Pike and Troots are feeding this Sunday. Time to drag some Baker Shads around the shallows and Misery and throw streamers for wandering Chromers.

Misery is shot, the shoreline melted. Town side still holding good ice, shore is tight. Liberty and Chestnut the place to be. If the extended weather holds true,I'll be fishing the whole month of February. Check out Presque Isle Angler facebook.  Planning a trip soon, minnows, grubs and jigs, spoons all catching fish. Fishing the channel is a long walk 22' seems to be the magic number but I find moving is best, right next to the walk at chestnut 19' can produce. Perch roam and so do I. I haven't run into the true jumbo's but 10"-11" fish are pretty much what I've been keeping with a few jumbo.
