I am not a flintlock expert, but I've been put a small amount of 4F before the charge. Seems to take the slight delay away.

I use 4F in my flash pan, and when I change it out, I clean out the touch hole a bit and put some 4F inside the hole.

Tips, good flint, clean grease free frizzen, dry powder, find a load that shoots good, good sights I put Williams on my 54 renegade much better than the original blade sight,a little 4F down the barrel before the charge. I patched round ball may shoot a touch better but for put down kills sabots or Maxi balls . I shoot a 430 gr maxi ball no longer made by Thompson. I've got 5 or 6 boxes left.

Thanks for those tips Tuna, can a guy buy molds for making his own [430 gr] maxi balls.  I got the lead and melting ladle.

What's the twist in the Renegade? I can't get anything to shoot well out of my 1/48 Firestorm over 300 grains.

1/48 dmps. I was curious and found a website October County, that makes the 430 gr8 Maxi that I shoot. Check out the web. I got a small mom and pap shop that just specializes in flintlock stuff nothing else within 7 miles.from me.

I am the worlds worst flintlock shot. Missed another today. Good thing is I whacked a doe last night with the bow.

I am 0-4 this year....with the last one being 20 yards. I got the yips.

Re: FLINTLOCK TAG 2017/01/09 08:57:38 (permalink)
I couldn't find my note book on my sight in but if I remember correctly the only good results with my Firestorm was the larger 50cal ball with an .18 patch when shooting free hand. I tried several types of sabots and off bench all I'd do is throw lead and a couple of patch less miniballs would sometimes hit the target sideways as if the mini was tumbling.
I dealt with October  county with excellent results, loved everything I received. Track  of the Wolf is another good outfit. Think there was another one called Dixieland or something close to that.
You guys are starting to make me regret selling all my black powder stuff, long guns, shotguns and pistols all gone! I have to go eat a Tumms getting an upset stomach

Here's another good tip. Have your Frizzen case hardened ( heat treated ) . I personally dont do it, my brother knows a guy. $20 I think. It will last a long time, plus you wont get a groove notched into it from the flint hitting the same spot all the time.

I might give track of the wolf a call. I want to upgrade my open sights to a peep or something. I have been hearing great things about a rear peep and a globe type front sight with a fine crosshair insert.

Would I be throwing money away buying one of the Traditions Deer Hunter black powder kits?

I'm thinkng small investment, trade in or, resale if I get the "bug" and wish to upgrade.

I bought the traditions pa pellet a few years ago. It's alot of fun to shoot and doesn't break the bank. And using powder pellets makes it very easy. If you go that route make sure to shoot several types of sabots out of it to find what is best. 3 pellets and a 250 grain shockwave works best out of mine. At the target at least I still haven't shot a deer with it but have shot at plenty!

Traditions isn't a bad smoker to start out with. Be better if you had someone close to let you shoot theirs, plus learn to clean right off the bat. Had several guys at my old club want to shoot but never offered to clean. It's not that hard but is a must do!

Just killed deer #20 this past Saturday with my TC Firestorm.
Our crew owns 7 of them and every one of them shoots the best with 100 grains (2 PyroDex pellets) and a 295 grain hollow point PowerBelt.
Our guns throw the ballistic tips all over the place.

Thank guys, I appreciate the input.

Dave I often wondered about shooting round ball from a shot barrel. Passed up a Traditions F/L shot barrel this past fall.

Oh well... there's always next year.

I think I still have the rail and scope off my Firestorm around here somewhere. However with the Flint it's a real hassle. I tried it in the early season to compete with inlines

DP do you wear glasses or at least shooting glasses? I had an old timer show me a trick that works. Take a small piece of electricians tape, put a small hole in it, I used an empty 22 shell, place it on your glasses where you look thur them when lining up you sights. I thought he was crazy till I tried it and all of a sudden I could see both my sights.

B.T. be careful buying used smokepoles! If they're not cleaned right black powder ruins the barrel and they become nothing but a ball thrower that goes bang!

Great advice Jigs..... signs of bad housekeeping enough to run from or should I be more concerned with pitting and corrosion?

I should have known better than to try and pull one on you! On a brighter note you do have to more careful buying a used smokepole over any other types of guns. Sad to say but some people shoot the things than just put them away till they want to shoot again. Or they do the clean the pan than wonder why powder won't stay in when they carry it around.

I had a Traditions Deerhunter, the lock and spring were junk, had them replaced and still nothing, and sold it and bought a Lyman Deerstalker and never looked back.

Lyman prices aren't too bad.

Someday if I hit the lotto, I'll splurge on the RMC Accusporter....just have hard time dropping $800 at moment on a flinter, but dang they look nice.
