Tiemco Hooks?

I have every Mustad hook known to man kind but evey pattern I find any more calls for a Tiemco hook. I can not seem to find a good conversion chart.

What is the difference between them and is tiemco better than any other type of hook?

I used to use TMC 2488h's for sucker spawn.  Great looking hook for eggs but after two seasons of losing way too many fish by the hook popping, I switched.  Doesn't seem to be a problem anymore.

I like daciihi.  The points are crushed (chemically sharpened).  With points being cut, it makes them less sharp.  I do believe TMC are crushed though..

I use Tiemco's almost exclusively.  They only times I dont are for midge pupae and larger streamers.

2488's are a fine wire caddis with a straight eye, I try to avoid them unless I really find it necessary to hide the hook well, which I do on some patterns.  Try 2457's for egg patterns as a heavy wire substitute, super sharp and strong, plus you wont get all the defects like you do with mustads.

Use the Mustad. They are fine and will not deplete the bank. Use a hook sharpener if you feel they are not sharp enough. I  use Mustad 3399 for nymphs and egg patterns, a  good hook and great price.
Defects? I have not experienced any.

Never had a problem with losing fish with Tiemco hooks, lost only fish I didn't want to land by putting too much pressure on them, hook pops out. The hooks mentioned are good choices though.

for a thin wire hook, stick with Diachi. The 2x, mustad are ok. Do not buy the thin wire from Bass Pro,their White River hooks such.Bend and break very easy, sending over$200 worth back, very disapointed in them.

Diachie's are an awesome hook. The tiemcos are also a nice hook, there extremely sharp! But, like silverkype said, they pop on a lot of fish.    Krott

In nearly half the packages of mustad hooks I have purchased, mostly 3399's there has been something wrong with them.  The most recent package had a nick in the bend of the every hook, everytime I went to tie on it the hook broke.  I have gotten packages where some of the hooks did't even have points on them, they were square on the point.  I have also got packs where 10 or so of the hooks had completely open eyes.  I would say this happened in about 6 packs I purchased, so this was not an isolated incident.  Needless to say, my experiences left a sour taste therefore I stay clear of any mustad product.  More importantly they are no where near as sharp as daichi, tiemco, dai-riki, ect. I dont know what most think but I am not willing to devote extra time to shapening hooks that small for what the price difference is.  To me an extra couple bucks for 50 goes a long way.

Thank you all for the thoughts. The conversion charts are better than the ones I have been using. As I need to replace hooks I think I will try the Teimco.

    Thanks again.

O' there sharp ask Bugdrifter about the flies we used this past fall.
I just fail to see the reason for purchasing 25 hooks for @$4.99 for steelhead. If your in the right drift your going to lose flies and 100 Mustads are @$5.00 a 100. Even if 10% are bad I'm still ahead. Dry fly hooks different story and stick with Temco 101.

I like the Tiemco. Use the 2457 for some nymphs and ss. Also use Mustad. I have gotten some bad ones from Mustad but you get what you pay for. As far as loosing fish on Tiemcos. That doesnt make any sence. Hooks dont loose fish anglers lose fish. The key is to check your hooks while fishing. You get hung up acouple of times but able to save the fly. You hook a fish and it comes off. You look at the fly and the points broke, dull or it got straightened out. What do you think did the damage? A hard unmovable object or an average steelhead? Fishermen love to make excusses why they lose fish, but they rarely say I messed up.

never had problems with mustad's, never broke one. got tiemco's once, the hook eyes were not closed all the way. took them back, got mustads to replace them and change back, i'll stick with mustads, nymph, dry and wets. i even bend my dry hooks when i tie some parachutes so the body sits below the water line, still never had one break!!

No matter what brand of hook you buy you'll eventually get a bad batch. ALL hooks are mass produced and it seems there is little quality control on any brand. I've had bad packs from just about all of the popular brands. lately, i've been using dai riki more than other brands, because the price is very good, and I feel they are as good as any of the other brands mentioned on this thread. The only problem is that they dont come in smaller sizes like 24's and 26's. For midges and tricos, i've been using mustads.

A couple years ago, I had a bad batch of tiemco nymph hooks. I cant say how many broke while I was fishing, but it was enough that I didnt buy them again. I'm sure I just got a bad batch, and that if I would buy them again today, the hooks would most likely be fine.

I used to tie on exclusively teimco but now i switch it up. At the life of a fly the price of the hook really isnt worth it.

The only difference is that tiemco is way overpriced. Anything that calls for a tiemco hook can be tied on a mustad of similar shape.

It is definatly true it is possible to run into defects in any brand of hook.  Im just saying that in my experience a higher % of mustads have been bad.

Now that I live in State College, Tiemcos are expensive, as said above somewhere around 5-5.50 per 50.  Back in Pittsburgh area I was getting 50 packs of them for 6.50.  Everytime im home I try and stock up.

It's a function of percentages, plus Mustad's QC is light years better than it was 10 or 15 years ago (until roughly just after TMC became popular).

That said, I find as many TMC defects in 100 count boxes as I do Mustads.  Both companies' 25 or 50 packs are always relatively clean.  One can also expect some more flaws in the cheaper Mustad Classics can they not?  I see zero difference between QC in the Mustad Signature (still cheaper) than the TMC's and the quality is better overall.

BTW:  if you get a Mustad defect, note the lot# on the box and notify the distribution  center in Auburn, NY and they are likely to give you a new set of hooks.

Which part are you referring too?

Chrome,  I agree about the Mustad signature hooks.  I should have mentioned previously I was talking about the standard Mustads.  The only thing with the signatures is that they are about equal in price to Tiemcos.  So I tend to stick with what I like best.

As far as returning/reporting bad packages of hooks, for $3 a pack I wasn't too concerned.

I use saber egg hooks, 2x strong chemically sharpened, 7 bux for a hundred.  Had better success with them that the 2488.  I also tie alot of flies on thier caddis bend too.

I used to tie only on mustad because of the price. One day while fishing the Little Red River in Arkansas, in a barbless only area, I got checked by the fish police. I smashed down the barbs on the mustads, and alot of them broke instead of flattening. The fish cop stuck my fly in his shirt sleeve (how they check for a barb), and when it wouldn't pull out easily (because of where the barb broke), he was going to write me a ticket for fishing with a barbed hook. Only after closely inspecting it did he agree that I had the proper intent, but also gave me a warning.
