State record brown trout

I was surprised when someone told me the brown hanging up in poor Richards was caught on night crawlers. It weighed 19 pounds and it was caught at the wall on walnut in 2000. Green egg sacks are the pattern this yr Xd . Apparently the guy that caught it was fishing for catfish.

That's a huge steelhead for PA.  Probably quite a surprise after expecting the typical 4-8lb fish on the end of the line.  I've seen and caught a few post 3 year fish in the 10-15lb range, but 20lbs is just significantly bigger than those.  Lots more around that size coming out of Lake Ontario.

Biggest steelie we landed out in the lake was 17#s...came off the boards on a watermelon worm harness with a big old crawler stuck on it.  Fish like worms...a lot...back in the day (80s) we used to fish crawlers and marshmallows off the Olcott/Wilson piers for browns.

That is the official record but that isn't the largest on record for a steelhead caught in PA.

    20lb 10oz
    35 1/4"
    21 1/4" girth

I haven't seen him around in a while. He used to be a regular on the shoreline slinging line and skinny flies with his 2-hander.

I seen several earlier this year, that would've given those numbers a challenge.  Mixed in with the typical 24-26", made em look like smolts.

The biggest steelie landed  I have personal knowledge of was a male  over 17 pounds that came from a large  deep hole (appx 12ft) on upper  Conny in EARLY AUGUST!!!
Hold over?? no clue, but I'd guess so

All the years I've fished I've only eye witnessed a true 15 lb. Steelhead caught.
Just happened to be my son's 34" buck from Elk. Just never seen bigger personally.

I've seen Browns from NY creeks caught that were 20lbers, my best ever Brown was 15lbs.

I caught many steel in the 15- 20 range but all in NY lake Ontario trolling. In the streams 15 lbs was my biggest and 13 lb brown still in NY streams. Pa biggest steelie maybe 12 lbs biggest brown 7 lbs. I caught a 13 lb King trolling out of walnut in the 80's,the pics still on the wall at the building at Walnut, back in the day caught a ton of coho in the streams. They should stock all types of salmoniods, kings, coho,Atlantic's and Brown's..Even a small return would be bee than nothing. I love fishing NY streams you never knew what you might catch.

You're one of the duuds here  I trust.
(not that I don't trust others) just that  you rarely  have  given suspect info over the years .
and/or the stuff that gets repeated all the time that doesn't match  my personal  observations

and being an old duud, I can't recall clearly...but seems i recall that record steel was caught early in the season at night or just at dawn??

My friend  that introduced me to steel in the mid '80s has a legit weighed  15 pound buck on his wall.
    38" I "think"
Came from lower Connie in the early '90s

I used to measure and scale most every steelie in my early days
I developed that habit lg mth bass fishing ..cause most everyone OVER estimates bass ..calling an 18" bass a 5 pound hog
(an average 18" bass is three pounds)

anyway, I scaled a lot of steel in the early days .
Cause I wanted a wall hanger no less than a "legit" 15#
Gave that up after a few years (carrying the scale) after weighing hundreds  ..length  was marked on the rods

Steelies aren't like bass...in that their   body wt to length varies a lot more than bass .
i have a pic of a clean hen that measured a full 30" but weighed only 6# on the dot.
The longest measured and scaled  steel was also a hen (from Niagara) 36"  long, 12.5#

Biggest I've personally landed had to go well over 14
it was the same year ALL the steelies were larger than average in both Pa and Ohio (Fall of '05 or '06 maybe??)

It was a FAT football shaped hen from Connie .
She  was 34" and change ..... and i gave some thought to bonking her for the wall cause i knew she had to be close to 15...but I didn't have a scale
I'll never know if she was 15# or not though..cause I sent her back on her way

still don't have a wall hanger steelie .
Lost the SURE wall hanger  years ago at Sterritainia.
It was, and still is the biggest steelie  I've ever seen to date ...it skeert me it was so big when it broke water and i saw it.
seriously, I'd bet hunnert it was or close to a state record

I've told the story before ...the short version is, as a result of my impatience It's just a memory and another fish tale of the  "one that got away"

My biggest creek Steelhead to date after many , many years of fishing is 13 lbs. Buck that went 32 " I hung it on the wall for several reasons # 1 being the size , but I had an extraordinary battle landing that fish on 2 lb. line ! It's got a great story behind it because it tangled up with another Steelie I lost earlier that day that broke me off. Imagine 2 large Steelhead tangled on one line and 2 lb. test at that. It's a long story but it was an amazing battle that I lucked out on.

On another note I get a kick out of how long or heavy some guys say fish are.
I did like you Genie I carried a soft tape measure for a lot of years and measured tons of Steelhead I and others caught. Seems 90% fall in that 24"-26" range then they seem to be stuck at 27" next. The ones at or over 30" rare ! I'd say about 1 in a hundred in Pa. or more!
The tape don't lie ! More people should carry that tape and not guesstimate !
Most would be in for a humbling shock !  Kind of like that 200 lb. deer in Pa.(dressed) !

I never got the infatuation with the citation fish. Kill a fish just to get a stupid patch..

200lb deer in Pa. I bet 99.5 % of the hunters in Pa will never shoot 1 in their lifetime.. 90% will say they have..

Don't need to kill it for it to be a citation fish; there is a catch and release qualification, steelhead over 24", brown over 21" with an on stream pic showing the tape and fish and witnessed by another.

idk if its just me or what but this year i've certainly noticed that there are bigger and more numbers of larger fish this year... i wonder if the mild winter last year contributed to this... maybe giving some of last years fish the opportunity to run again.... or maybe not killing as many bait fish in the lake... just some thoughts

as for my personal bests i have a few pics ill upload later ...  true 30 inchers... but i dont have pics of two others ive caught ... one was when i was younger before i even had to buy a license i was fishing just upstream of route 5 and landed a HOG i had a pic but of course it was blurry... i'm going to say it was over 30 also and well over ten pounds but that was years ago...

another one i was fishing in the tubes and i hooked one on the far wall... it flew up and down the creek like a missile and jumped out of the water right on to the ledge.... quickest steelhead i've ever landed.... lol .. it was 11 lbs

I caught a hog @ Walnut a few weeks back. I should of taken it to get weighed, was well over 10 lbs.

I caught a 12lb brown (my PB) and this felt heavier than he did.

I guess I'll repeat myself. Never understood the KILLING OF A FISH to get a patch on their vest.. I am not talking about released fish, I know there is a catch and release citation. Don't think too many were released after being roped for 5 hrs and pictures at Poor Richards after.. But hey, what do I know...
