In 2014 we were approached by a guy in his boat from Ohio fish comm asking us about a 30 crappie limit at 9 inches. All 3 of us told him we were in favor of it...never heard any more about it. I do hope it goes through (is it official or is this an opinion thread?). So if the "blue army" can keep sublegal 'eyes, are they going to be expected to abide by this reg?

I'd love to see this adopted pa wide. 20 fish limit(30 combined? ) on all pan fish would be great imo.

I tried but alas I failed to find the information I received from the PFBC via their news letter.  Unfortunately, I deleted (no didn't use BleachBit) the letter and as usual, I can't find a darn thing on the PFBC web sight.  Well, most yinz know how that goes, never seems to fail; eventually it will turn up and always without a doubt, in the very last place you'll look.

Anyways, if my memory serves me right..........................  Ehhhh,  The new reg. passed with a 9 inch,    ummm...... 15 creel limit or was it 20.

Whatever......... new Crappie regs. will be in place at Pymatuning State Park Lake beginning 2017.

Oh.... sorry, forgot the original question;  yes I am for the new reg.s  but I hope the change is monitored closely because the opposite has occurred at other fisheries which produced gazillions, or was that bazillions, of undersized fish.

PS.  I should also note, the new reg.s will not affect me one way or another as much of yinz know,  I can't catch the stupid fish no matter what size OR, how many there are.

First yes I am in favor of this.
Second it is official and will take effect next Year.
Third like BTDT this will not effect me much

Didn't help Arthur or Wilhelm when tested 10 panfish limit for some yrs. What looks good on paper ain't always so.

Worth a try for a few yrs. & see the outcome.

crappy

Thought Pymy was one ov best slab Crappie spots 'round, Imo wouldn't try fixin' what ain't broken.

Out a few times this month (north end) & haven't seen another boat out. Linesville work lookin' very nice indeed.

I think slot limit would be better. Say 9"-11" you could keep. Everything else goes back in. With a 15 possession limit. But what do I know. I'm just a try to be average fisherman like BTDT.

I agree with Crappiefisher.  Why mess with what is working?  I would bet that the "Blue Army" is actually helping the fishery, by not letting it stunt.  I don't get to fish Pymie as nearly as I would like.  But when I do, I always seem to catch some decent crappie.  What I would consider slabs at Arthur, are what many consider average at Pymie.  Arthur gets probably twice the pressure, but I don't think it gets nearly the keep everything clientele that Pymie does.

20 fish limit works for me. As old dog said, I don't want to clean that many pannies most of the time anyway.

Rich, I am all for it,I don't get to fish there since I sold my boat, but from what I see around here especially Twin lakes after they changed the size limit & possession limit for Crappie we have gotten nicer fish than ever. I would like to see it for Greenlick also. To me it is a shame to see guys keeping 6&7" fish then crying about not getting many slabs. I like to tell them that most fish don't grow much in the frying pan.  JMO   sam

When did Wilhelm ever have a 10 limit fish for Crappie? Last special reg I knew about was the PENNSTATE FBC destroying the lake with stupid fish specific lake nonsense that didn't work for BASS.

I should ov said the panfishers went to Wilhelm instead ov Arthur. I like the idea ov the Pymy thing but like you said, better keep close tabs on the fishery or could backfire. I can go to Arthur most times & get a limit or close to it once in the spring & then again in the fall so don't have to make a mess in the kitchen but twice a yr. Just as easy to slice 50 for me as to 20.

For Wilhelm, I wouldn't oppose a 10 pan fish limit and even a slot limit as suggested above but I have to say for only a set number of years then extensions only if a study warrants a continuation.

The really neat thing, with a ten fish limit, I would need only go fishing 20 times to actually catch a limit.πŸŽƒ

Or is that 10 fish a day? πŸ˜‹

  Rich,
Rumor far from truth . I fish best by myself or with my sons. If Porktown, Spoonie, Dreamcatcher, Rippin'lip, Startinout, Bighead or Resquard fished with me it would be a guarantee skunk, talk way too much.

It helped with the local old timers (mostly all passed away)  locals & my one son, by accident & just plain dumb fishin' dusk too dawn night after night myself with no one around.

I've seen him pull in perch after perch, while shooting the breeze. It's not just legend. I do hear what he says. I usually do better fishing alone. Even when wading with my dad or father in law. It is rare that we are within 50 yards of each other for very long. Obviously not the same on the boat. Worst is when one of them gets a bite (usually a bluegill) and I am ready to move to another spot. We end up sitting there for another hour, to catch that one small fish...

20 panfish a good number for me. Not sure I've kept more than 20 though. Similar regs have been in place on a reservoir I often fish. Seldom do I catch crappie bigger than 11 inches. Perhaps the overall size of the crappies has nothing to do with the regs, but rather the habitat? I dunno. The gills are a different matter, plently of chunky 9 inchers.

It was saying 9 inch 20 fish limit. Pa passed it and Ohio is also but said something about not official or in effect till March when OH can make the rule change. Said thru good and bad spawns and high or low catch rate years focus on crappie fishing is all time high, has increased every year. Said crappie at pymatuning lake are more similar to mid western lakes in growth and reach size in 3 years that other Pa lakes take 4 years to reach. Haha stuff like that, seems like they're trying to stay ahead of it before there's a problem.

Have to kill some small fish to keep the population healthy.  That's why I don't flinch to kill a half dozen or so small perch each trip as bait.  I count them against our limit of 50-100 fish, which we never come close to.

Arthur is swarming with small perch and bluegills, and I'm not certain that the predators bother to eat them when the lake is so full of alewives.  More specifically, I know that the sub 2" panfish get foraged on.  But that 4-6" group is the range that need to be kept thin for overall size.

When I Pan fished with the kids and so on, I never kept more then 10-12 fish.
Seemed after you got home unpacked and put all the gear away, a dozen nice size Pan fish was enough to clean in one sitting.

One trip we brought home 44 nice ones and it was just too many fish to clean after all the day's events ! Never did that again ! Those fish nuggets are good eating !

I agree with cleaning a lot of pan fish and can understand how monotonous something like that could get.

Why I remember once when I cleaned crappie! I thought I'd never get the second side filleted on that fish.πŸŽƒπŸ‘»πŸŽƒ

On a side note, docks are still in at Shenango.

I'm a master with Mr Twister. One fish per minute, fillet, skinned in the bag. As long as there big I don't have a problem doing a mess. 25 fish take about 45 minutes with cleanup.

Never used a electric knife. I have the cutco fisherman's solution and can do about a crappie a minute. May have to try electric one day just to see if it's as easy as they say but I'm hard headed and don't like to change what works for me.

Check out the dudes on Youtube cleaning catfish with those electric knives.

I now have a sure fire way to keep from catching those pesky critters. I'll buy a electric knife so I can fillet them with little difficulty and I won't catch another one.πŸŽƒ

Back on topic, I think the new limit will be bad for the local businesses. It's too low. Thirty at nine would keep people coming from long distances to fish. Most won't get their limit but it's more fun trying to get to thirty than it is to twenty. Guides will even lose money with the changes being made. Baitshops will too. There's nothing wrong with this lake. Learn how to fish it and you'll take bigger fish home all year.
