Very true....when I do upgrade, I will get a unit with built in GPS. More often than not, I leave the handheld in the truck.

Bsapp if you have any "how to" or "don't do" making maps, I'm all ears.


Dave keep your eyes open on the water, rumor has it there's a new "Billy Big Boater" in the area with a big motor. lol



Chartselect is great! Especially in PA where there are about 10 maps you can have on the entire Lakemaster Chip!
 
Only suggestion I really have is when recording make sure the transducer is in the water and stays in the water. It will throw you maps max depth off if it comes out. I did this once and it was about 132' deep where the boat launch is...when I pulled the boat I didn't realize I still had the unit on...
 
Another thing I need to figure out is the water level change. I know you can adjust in Autochart but I want to be as accurate as possible. The only thing I can think of is to use a hand held while on the water everytime and record the elevation. Subtract the two and now you have the elevation change. I fish mostly Electric Motor only lakes down here and it can take some time to map the hole thing, aka over the course of a summer with the water level going up and down.
 
I think the two points are fairly valuable but I am sure there are a lot more pointers out there!
 
You will love mapping, I think it is amazing to get in the 3D view and see just how it looks without the water there!

Bsapp thank you, I can see water depth being affected by waves and or too much power lifting the transducer while making turns.

Made my first trip to the Cranberry Field & Stream store. Great store; better'n Bass Pro at Springfield or Cabelas at Sydney or Wheeling. Been to all of them. Quite a few deals, Raps $6.00 each if you buy 4 or more, and of course the savings on the 'Bird Helix. Still had 7 of the Helix 5s in stock, but every Helix 7 was sold out, including the demo. Saved my credit card 'til this fall, when all the electronics get blown out everywhere as they get replaced with new stuff. I don't think there's any product in the world that outdates itself like electronic equipment.

Today's technology is obsolete tomorrow.


Still waiting for my AutoChart Pro but it's on it's way, somewhere between my little piece of Penn's Woods and Trenton, NJ. Sure hope my electronic program gets here before it becomes obsolete.

Meanwhile, I plugged my sonar recording info into the 'bird APP to learn about some of those features. Clicked on a few of my waypoints then chose GoogleEarth and watched as those very locations were pictured on my 'puter. Absolutely awesome!! Even neater, I did the 360 degree thingy and after locating, I zoomed in on the parking lot at the Jamestown boat launch and there parked, was my........ well OK maybe I might be getting carried away but, that's just me, being me😜.

Just curious....what do you guys find more useful...Down scan or Side scan? To me it seems like Side scan has overtaken down scan
