Boat Project

I got to thinking today about how I am going to do my deck... carpet, herculiner...plywood.

I was wondering, and figured Id get an opinion from everyone first.

How about frame it out, then use 2X2" to create basically what would look like a mini house deck. Then coat it in glass. Heres my thinking. Not only would it look really cool if I only spaced them say 1/2" or 1" apart but it would allow everything to drain to the bottom where it could run back and be picked up by the bilge pump. I think it would last longer then ply, look nicer and like I said stay dryer rather then having carpet to hold the water in while the wood fights to keep it out.

Has anyone ever seen this done. Ive pretty much sold myself on this idea unless someone can give a reason why its a bad idea. It sure would be sturdy. Figured Id first stain every other one a darker color. Giving it the homemade canoe look.

Thoughts, precautions?

Sounds nice, keep the spacing between the 2 x 2's tight. Otherwise items falling between the 2 x 2's. and rolling around under the deck, IE: split shot, WORMS, swivels, Spanish pieces of eight, etc., could be a pain to retrieve.  OTH

Maybe 1/4" in that case, the whole boat wont be decked so i will have places to reach up under and it will have access hatches to throw vests and stuff in.

I think im going to coat the whole inside of the boat in it first, before decking it, just to protect it and seal up any small leaks. Im really dign the wood look and idea.

Seen something like that once. The guy used 1x4s in the bottom of the boat and were built to the contour of the bottom. They could be lifted out to clean the boat easier. Had them from bow to stern.

If I was goin with wood I'd use cedar or treated. The treated is heavy though.

Had a rather long discussion about this tonight and came to the conclusion I dont wanna take the chance of dropping bait down under there and it stinking to high hell. Carpet it is. Tore out all the seats, hatch and bow anchor today. The guy who owned it before the guy I bought it from did one crappy job. I would have not liked to hit a rock in that boat on one of those post seats. It was held in by nothing but screws. What little decking was there for the seats was LAG BOLTED from the exterior to the interior and not sealed at all. Took it through the car wash after I got all the crap out of it! Found out I also need a new fish finder! FUN!

    Go to my forum... http://forums.outdoorintegration.com

There isnt a bunch yet, this cold weather has really slowed me down because I dont have a heated garage. In fact, two days ago I built a motor stand and brought the outboard in the house... changed all the fluids.
