What's the weirdest thing you caught a fish on ?

Remember the Velveeta cheese days ! Garlic soaked minnows ! Nitro green nightcrawlers ! WD 40 !
Dr. Juice ! Banjo Minnows ! Light up Lures !
A lot of crazy stuff that actually caught some fish when used. Just wondering what's the strangest bait or lure you caught fish on or seen caught on !

I caught a 12lb. Steelhead out of the Niagara River from shore on a piece of artificial rubber skein. I had my doubts when I bought a pack.........I was totally amazed that it worked. Never got another.....LOL

capt.  Back in the day, we actually caught more than a few Kings & Browns in N.Y. on Green rubber skein. My weirdest, was once I caught a nice Walleye on a piece of sponge that was dipped In Cod Liver Oil. I was fishing 10 mile creek for Channels at the time. I got plenty of Catfish on that ,but only ever got 1 walleye on it.   sam

I caught a trout once with a tiny bb size split shot on. Pushed it all the way to the hook and jigged it. one day forgot the bait so i had donuts and caught some trout. Saw some neat stuff on the net.. An old iphone, a guy used the tab to open a beer can (to catch a salmon), also saw some weird looking flys catching some musky,  cant forget the guy who used the wrench.

I take a razor blade and slice balloons into micro strips and put on micro ice jigs when things get tough. A size 16 Russian jig has caught several 12-14 inch crappie and 9 inch gills.  Many decades ago beef spleen soaked in red food dye caught many lunker pay lake trout along Velveeta cheese.lol

Did not actually catch this fish, it however gave a thrill. Last winter while fishing on the south pier P.I. bay for Ling- Burbot I had one of those pesky Mudpuppies on.  As I was reeling in a hog Walleye grabbed it.  I never got a hook in the Eye but it hung on for a bit of a fight. When it got to the surface someone put a bright light on it we all saw it was a big Eye. It then took a big run and let go.  Had the net been ready the outcome would have been different. That Eye tore up that Mudpuppy but the Mudpuppy had swallowed the hook.

Velvetta cheese was the trout go to when we were kids. Would cut the whole block up into small squares the night before and put it into small ziplock bags and freeze it for the next day. Just put a piece on the hook and you were good to go. Also watched someone use red gum to catch trout.

I can remember fishing one very hot summer day with a buddy of mine at Shenango Reservoir.  Now, technically we WERE there to catch fish, but we also had a couple of bottles of Boones Farm Apple wine with us. (probably from the afore mentioned Milk Barn)    To carry out the premise of fishing while we imbibing we each threw a line out  Mine happened to have a purple rooster tail on it.  Nothing else, just a purple rooster tail.  After sitting on the bottom for probably an hour or so I decided to crank the rooster tail back in only to be met with a heavy weight and great resistance.  After an epic struggle, or perhaps the wine made it epic, I dragged in a carp that probably went around ten pounds.  The plain, purple, rooster tail, all the way down in it's gullet.  Now what would have made that carp eat the rooster tail and then just sit on the bottom of the lake til I picked up my pole only God knows.  But, it was, and still is one of the oddest catches I have ever made.

The weirdest this I've caught fish on, probably an unbaited size 8 baitholder hook on a snap swivel, Bluegill go nuts for shiny snap swivels!

Ref, speaking of the old Velvetta Cheese days, I remember being on Shenango River for an opening day of Trout years ago. There were two younger guys fishing next to each other both probably around 12 years old.
The one kid that was a little on the chunky side says to his buddy " hey Jimmy you got any cheese left for bait" ?
His buddy says yea I do, what happened to all of yours ?
His friend says " I ate it all this morning " !   LMAO !

Even though it's sold and marketed as a fishing bait, I still can't believe how many trout and steelhead I catch on the Bubblegum (bright pink!) Berkley Trout worms. In the past 6 years I've caught more trout - including wild browns on the Little Juniata River and wild brook trout in the Laurel Higlands - and steelhead than on any other live or artificial bait I've used.

I've  slammed the Steelhead in past years on the white Trout worms!

A buddy of mine caught a nice 10lb. N.Y. Brown on day, claimed he was using a single green pea on a float !

They work (rubber Trout worms ) just require some patience and practice.

Years ago fishing on Buffalo Creek in Armstrong county I saw a trout hit  a cigarette butt floating down the stream. It was about 10am and the trout weren't hitting much after the morning bite. I asked a buddy for a cigarette butt, put it on the hook and caught a 14" rainbow on the first cast. Tried again without success. While field dressing the fish it had 2 cigarette butts in it's stomach.

I felt so ridiculous the first time I used those things.  I bought them early in the AM at Poor Richards and was having an OK day with shiners and single eggs.  I busted out the pink ones in the late afternoon and had one of the best 3 hour stretches of steelhead fishing I've ever had.

reminds me of this quote (forget who said it) - "my greatest fear in life is that when i'm dead, my wife will sell my fishing gear for what i told her i paid for it."

JRSR, that's crazy!  Good reply Old Dog ! .. LOL

I totally believe it because I gutted a 15" stocked Rainbow one time and it had a white plastic cigar tip, a large wad of white chewing gum, and a white colored stone all inside of it's stomach!

I've gutted a number of stockies years ago that had the "gold swivels" only inside their belly !

I caught a nice fish on a fishing pole!! No joke!!! However it was not my pole! Someone's pole must have been pulled in. No one near me claimed it, I don't know why, unless it was their only pole and left after they lost it. Anyway at the end of the day I gave it to the first kid I passed.

I lived beside a Trout hatchery for 20+ years. If anyone came around smoking cigarettes the owner went into warning mode. He told every smoker that the buts killed his fish. They plugged the gut. He would dissect any fish found dead. Most killed by Herons and Kingfishers, however it sure irritated him when one died plugged up with a cigarette butt.

I caught a few cats on gummy worms at a local lake down in FL when I was a kid. And a few on green beans on a hand line down thru a runoff grate in the road while waiting at my bus stop in elementary school.

Captn. Great post, brings back a lot of good memories. My crew also used Velveeta cheese, spleen,Anise oil soaked corn & most others listed. I got Trout on cigarette filters Got many gills on a bare swivel on a hook after we ran out of bait also tried with some success, strips of Seal Skin on ice jigs, we also used house flys that we killed on the porch & then used the eyeballs of the gills we caught to catch Perch, which for some reason really liked them. The only time that I can remember falling for those T.V. wonders was over 50 yrs ago when we spent all of the money that my buddy got for his birthday for a guaranteed, super dooper can't miss 2 piece bucktail jig.Unfortunatly not only did we not get a fish & lost it the first time that he used it, we also got a whup'n when we were found out. Oh well at least I learned a lesson from that.  thanks again  sam

I was golfing in Morgantown, maybe ten years ago.  I was walking across a breastwork with a sand wedge and i was poking around the weeds at the edge of the water with it looking for a ball.  I had a very large channel catfish come up and latch onto the head of the club, only briefly, maybe for five seconds.  I guess it must have thought it was a gill or something floundering around on it's side.  Pretty cool experience.

When i was very young. We lived down in Prosperity Pa. There was a small pond on the landlords property that my brother and I would fish in. Had an old bamboo pole and a Christmas tree hook. caught a few bluegill with that ornament hook!
