I wouldn't call them runs but "Sprints"

Fish are in the creeks, but the lack of water so far is holding them back. Crystal clear water and 2-4lb line if you plan on catching anything.

Plenty of fish around since late August....the low clear water makes it tough to hook them!  Go light with 4 pound flouro carbon and you will do OK

Those things spread around so much. Some people apparently are catching them in the Tribs that early and we were getting good numbers trolling 12 miles offshore in about 100 FOW. Don't know which group of fish was confused haha.

I dont know about the west side, but we have been hammering the steelhead on the east side.  From the bay down to 20 mile in the lake there are big schools all over.  On sunday we watched a few schools pushing bait balls to the surface to feed on.  Kinda neat...like something you would see in the ocean.

Dang, that sounds awesome! I need to keep my boat up there longer next year, it'd be nice if it was easier to start the engine in such cold weather haha.

I am down Butler and have been fishing the open water for about 8 years. Only fished the streams 2 -3 times a year becauce of the amount of people. I haul a 20ft Larson up so I was looking to bring the boat up if its worth it this weekend and do a off shore trolling & jigging.
Thanks for the help

You should also check the OhioGamefishing web site if you also have an Ohio license.  Someone was talking about the good luck he was having trolling around the Conneaut break walls and shore.  Seems like he was doing really well several trips.

Dave, Thanks for the heads up. If anyone goes out in Lake Erie say from walnut creek in there boat and goes over the state line into Ohio waters do you have to have a Ohio License, or are you just taking chances with out one

LOL

"Plenty of fish around. I have been slaughtering them all year".

(In reality - I catch 5-10 fish an outing so I will never notice a decrease in fish anyways.

"Use 4lb fluoro. Fish can see your line."

(in reality - Break off everything you tie due to shale)

"Erie is great this year"

(in reality - Enjoy fishing elbow to elbow due to warm weather with very few fish and super low water)

LetMeBeFishing, ask yourself this question.  If you ventured way out on the lake and fished into Canadian waters do you think the Canucks will pinch you for not having a Canadian license?

Caught some of my best steelhead and walleye this year right next to and at times about 10 yards in to Canadian waters, didn't even realize we crossed over until I checked the map LOL :). Odd thing was that there were tons of fish for one week then they disappeared, but we were the only ones out there...

Divemaster:   I'm not positive but I was told if you only have a Pa. license and launch in Ohio but cross the line and only fish Pa. you would probably have trouble with the law if you were checked upon your return to the Ohio launch.  How could you prove you didn't catch the fish in Ohio?

I think that'd be more up to the individual officer to decide. But, if you're going to be fishing in PA waters then it'd be worth the extra driving distance to launch in PA. Same goes with if you're fishing in OH, NY, etc. I'm not sure how strict the other states are but like I said I didn't see any Canadian enforcement out in the middle of nowhere along the border (or any other boats, for that matter), so I doubt they're concerned or angry if a US fisherman is fishing that close to the border. I wouldn't imtentioonally cross the border without a license though as by the time I realized we crossed over for about 2 minutes, we were already back in the US. I also doubt the PFBC would be angry if a Canadian fisherman crossed 100 feet over the US border for a short time on a troll, so long as they were fishing fairly (not snagging, keeping reasonable limits, etc, etc), at least that's my opinion. Maybe the Great Lakes states and Ontario should create some joint liscnese that allows everyone to fish in both country's waters, or all the states on a certain lake should do that for their waters, like that'd ever happen haha. It'd be awesome if it did, though!

If you launch at an ohio launch you better have an ohio license.  If you are fishing ohio waters, you better have an ohio license. You can get a day pass for like $12 or 40 for the year non resident, no sense in risking it.

You might wanna do a little research on guys losing their boats and having to pay fines over crossing into canada when they shouldnt be there.  Crossing the border is crossing the border. Doesnt matter if you are 1 foot or 10 miles in.

That being said, there is a hotline you need to call and answer some questions before entering, that and a canadian license and you are legal to cross as long as you dont touch land.  Boats out west do it all summer long.

Is it that easy to buy an Ontario liscence if you live in the US? If so, where can I get one? I'd love to make some trips over the border to hit 180-200 FOW sometime.

not been my observations over the years.
Not on the west side tribs anyway (I know nothing abut the east)

I've gotten lucky in late Dec a time or two  to be over a few fresh fish , but for the most part, the runs   peak in late Oct and is pretty well done by mid Nov.
save for a handful of stragglers, it's pretty  much done til the few Ohio strays and jacks come in in the  Spring

the "big runs" that happen are long since  over by mid Nov

'least that was the typical pattern in the years I was fishing pret'near every week from Sept to May

Ohio strays and jacks
Not unusual  to happen on a  bunch of jacks .
That's always big fun...cause they're dumb (easy to make bite)  and fight 10Xs better than the moldy holderovers 3 times their size
