Opening day Song dog

Saw few deer but managed to get this big male coyote at about 10:30. He is going to be tanned. Great fur on him.

Climbed down from my stand to only walk about 60 yards so that my buddies to hear me on the radios for a check in. I saw this guy coming from my left and closing fast from 40 yards. I froze and he stopped at 25 yards staring my way. He threw his nose to the air and began looking down the hill where one of my buddies was. I think he was catching some of his scent. When he started moving again I brought my gun up and shot him at 20 yards. There was some multiflora rose in between us and I think that obscured his view enough that I was able to pull it off.

I was caught flat footed at close range but the hunting gods must have been smiling on me.

Good job dems.  Not too many make that kind of mistake. Hope deer hunting pick up for you. Not one of my buddies killed a gun buck. My son shot a small rack 7pts on Monday but that was the only deer he saw.

    Nice work DPMS!

While I was waiting for it to get light Monday I had something come trotting through zigging and zagging almost directly under my stand.  It was still fairly dark at the time and my first thought was that it was a fox, but in retrospect I think it was too big to be a fox and was actually a yote.

Good luck fellas with getting that deer.
