No tried Wednesday afternoon. Went up river where I was successful with a half dozen chubs and a smallmouth. I'll get them this week

Not if I get them first. Tell your Dad I'm never going to let him live the 3/4's of the way to the rock story down.... Seeya on the water, bud. Don't forget those boots, if it's OK.

A float on the top where only 3 Salmon are seen by an experienced angler this time of year is pathetic.
Yes- its still early for some years but --THREE .
Yes, there could have been more- in low waters though- hiding in dark holes but-- THREE-- in the whole top.
Lousy at best.
Clearly the thiamine damage  is still looming large.

I'm going anyway, and will carefully fish using the knowledge I've gained and wait it out. Paid off last year, but I'm not looking for numbers, just a fish or 2. Last year was just like this way into Sept. , this year is a little more of a prolonged wait. Not a good year by any means and steel may be very, very poor, but still worth fishing. I know Dime, Clint and others have all said a few bad years may blow out the goons. Silver lining, guys, silver lining. The problem with that theory is that lots are coming for the party and don't really care if their harpoons with reels taped to them don't stink like fish.

The hope is that with few fish they will get bored  (we all know the only reason to fish is #s) and decide to start drinking earlier and leaving the river by late morning instead of yawking all day long.
I like to catch fish but it is not the only reason I love fishing.
Silver lining indeed.

If I were there today, I'd fish the Joss Hole area of the DSR.  Probably still a week away from a decent push of fish.  I won't bother with the DSR since I arrive on Oct 13.  Pineville to the church hole along with everyone else.  Then off to the Altmar Hotel.  $1.50 Genny Cream Ale, Yum.

True , true . I still believe the lake was the indicator . No matter the fishing , I'm looking at meeting up with old friends I missed last year . It will be a good time

Yep. The one  important thing that gets put in the pocket of our vests and fishing jackets is all the great times we can pull out and use in the slow times.
We've had some blasts and will again. I'm looking forward to seeing some friends and sharing some water and stories.  When you fish with good friends, if one lands one, it's as good as doing it yourself. One of us will be hooking up. Probably Jack, as usual.

Am with the one fish a day to make me happy crowd-however- the crowds are clearly still there and when that happens the worst things  occur-be prepared for folks jumping in and crowding if they even THINK you may be working a fish.
There is lots to be said for weeding out the crowds but even one decent push or season will immediately bring them back- there is no going back to pristine for more than a very short time.
The fish need to be at a decent level and spread through the system for any of us to truly enjoy a bit of fishing the way we like to do it.
I fear any reports of a pod running up will make it worse as there are so very few fish--- as yet.
Thiamine has changed our world.
Certainly there WILL be some kind of run coming in a short time and just as certainly there will be a huge push of fishermen very quickly thereafter.
YES --am getting old and ****ety and wonder If I will live long enough to see 'good times' again.

The fish are there, reports down in the center of the lake say stacked like cordwood off the mouth of the Genesee, but whatever triggers the run has not happened yet.  The weather people are talking about the prolonged summer temperatures, summer is off by about a month. Remember how cold and wet June was, and I was fishing in snow on opening day of inland trout.  I have seen data recently that show there is a definite gradient to prey fish distribution with much denser populations to the west, declining as you go east.  But it remains to be seen how they run.  Has anyone taken the water temperature in the river?

Cold front coming Tuesday, maybe that will be the trigger.

That West to East came up last season when we got pounded with the disease. Kinda recall that Canada and  West was not so affected.
Heavier Ice over on the East end ???

Will say, last week and a half of august through mid September looked reasonably better than last year. I too have heard same as lucky with fish right out front and even more back in 100-120 foot...

That's funny you say that L, the reports today from some lake captains say they are void in front of the genny and still griping about pizz poor lake fishery .
Maybe they are using reverse psychology .

Either way , as Charlie said , we will have FUN and hope we take turns netting Jacks fish because it's almost a pre given that the fish master will have the hot rod

Don't know much about stocking science but gotta wonder what would happen if 'our' SR fingerlings that have been implanted to SR would fare better if stocked out West.
Would thay stay out that way and grow only to want to return to SR ??
Thus avoiding the heavy ice over and related thiamine/bait issue.
Yea- I know- simplistic answers are for novices.

Rg, they do a lot of pen rearing out there . They complain many of " their " fish stray and end up in the SR.
Those little micro chips they implant do give feed back

My guess is a decent push will happen Monday am. thru Wed. am. if looking at the weather forecast.
Lake O - Capt. Tom Burke did reeeeeel well recently and from several very credible Capt. (frends) report's yesterday (not from the internet)  said there are very good #'s - bunch - a LOT of Salmon being marked from the Salmon River South to Oswego River. Not many North of SR. Best Fish's, Frank

Warning H.T. - Self promotion (yukyuk)
Yup, I'm very fortunate to be running a very busy - profitable guide biz. for over 30 years. When your new, its easiest to work and or book all weekends, holidays and peek times. When your an old fart like me (and some of you - yukyuk), you can work when you want too, not because you have too ;) I'm lucky to not have to work during these peek times and enjoy working all my M-F's all season and helping 4-5 local referal guides out with my massive over flow of trips. Plus, like you, we all need a day off now and again, so why not take them during the busiest day's on the river and only guide your guest's when there are the least # of anglers fishing, offering them greater opportunity. Not bragging, but......  ;) Best Fish's, Randy Jones
(PS - Thanks again HT, for giving me the opportunity to self promote - jus kid'n ;)

Thanks! and Thanks for the invite!
Im working straight out next week with lil time to eat and sleep. But would reeeely enjoy get'n together sometime. You can drink and Ill wish I could still drink ;)
Whats funny is Im thinking of changing my name to Discount Guide Service. My last 7 trips were sloooow, so I discounted each day. Made me feel a lil better.
We had a presence of fish each day, but few wanted to play when fishing everything legal. Plus, very good presentations over all by my guest's.
Most of our Salmon were doing the "parting like the red sea" as our drifts came by. Biggest Salmon last week was a big ol female full of eggs weighting approx. 30 lb's. (released it for YOU to catch!
