Tempted to venture into NY
Good afternoon all, I have been tempted more and more each year to venture up past Erie and into New York for some Salmon/Steelhead/Browntrout fishing. Not asking for any spots but wondering just how far north would one need to venture to hit some of these spots? I had a guy talk to me about Oak Orchard at Cabelas saying its 100x better than the Erie tribs. Any tips would be great! Feel free to PM as well if you have delicate info, lol.

Tribs stretch across the southern shore and up the eastern shore. Salmon river has the most stable/ semi-year round fishery due to its tailwater flows. Most other tribs are extremely volatile leaving them either too low, too high, or frozen over

I use to fish Erie. Then I discovered the SR...I travel from Cincinnati. When I reach Erie, I am only half way there. There is no better river than the SR. Erie is a series of ditches compared to the SR and to a lesser extent, Oak Orchard Creek.

The SR is a good river but to say there is nothing like it..... thas a stretch. Its no ditch by any means but it doesnt come close to some of the WILD salmon fisheries on the east coast or anything Alaska has to offer. A man of your means should already know this. Jus say'IN..

A couple years back I talked with a retired optometrist while fishing the DSR. He said he'd fished salmon in Alaska and it cost $1000 per day....And he went on to say that for pure fish catching, the SR was just as good. I bought a reel from a fly shop in Oregon. The guy tried to tell me how good the salmon fishing was on the Deshutes. He said you'll catch probably one per day. I told him no one from the east coast is coming all the way to fish the Deshutes for one a day when you can catch 10 a day on the SR. And if your from Brooklyn with a piece of red sponge on your heavily weighted hook, make that 10 by 9am!!!

Snagging ain't fishing. It's snagging, no matter what you and the Brooklyn homeboy call it.

Who ever paid $1000 a day to fish salmon in Alaska got robbed bad. Unless they were with Greg Hiester and his crew from SoF. Again, besides that, a man of your means shouldn't be bothered by price anyways....jus say'IN.

Stick to 2bob, he's much more patient. I'm more likely to get a little touchy and head the wrong end of you towards the water.....

When I bought my Mad River Club hats, some of the old timers in the club (I'm a member for 20+ years now) advised me to change to something else before going into the local gin mills. If local reading skills aren't up to snuff, a Mad River Outfitters hat could get you involved in some spirited and energetic conversation at a place like the Altmar, and definitely stay away from Ma Barker's. Also jus sayin'! Kind of like the Association of Environmental Conservation Officers hats you used to be able to buy once in a while. They were great for clearing water of out of staters that had not seen them before.

For $30, I can buy everyone seated at the bar at the Altmar Hotel a Busch light. Bingo, I just made 20 new friends.

Busch cans are 2 bucks there... Genny lights used to be 1.50... Don't know if that's changed. If you and two Bob go over there I may be tempted to crash that party

Is NY like PA and you need to get individual stamps for a 1-day fish pass? I'm going to be up Erie all next week and think I might take a drive to check out Upper NY on of those days!

You can get a 1 day, 3 day, 7 day or full year licenses for freshwater. No special stamp for Ontario tribs. When you say upper NY what are you referring to?

I like Oak Orchard from mid October on. From below Archer's club to the dam, it's nice, but crowded. I agree that Oak Orchard is better than most Erie streams but Elk Creek can be very nice if timed right. I'd say OO is 10x better than Elk and SR is 10x better than OO. And for spring steelhead, I like the Rocky in Cleveland in April.

Get ready for what can be either a tough, rowdy, snobby, elitist, or obnoxious crowd... But there are good people Currently the salmon river is lining up with more and more people everyday. Don't expect too much tranquility. But enjoy.
