Well I'm somewhat of a govt conspiracy thinker so here goes the theory . If the lake is in danger with forage and the dec is saying record levels of natural salmon reproduction is occurring , how do you try to balance things from a crash ? 1. Try and stock more forage base 2. Try to reduce stocking the preparatory base 3. Increase the stocking of lake trout ( which they did ) to combat the invasive base which neither salmon or steelhead feed on . 4. Tell everyone things are just fine and its just an off/ bad year . 5. Go fishing and keep supporting the fishery I like # 5 until it is no longer a realistic approach

Trevor and tuna all good input. Trev, I hear you on conspiracy theories, but I never count it out. Anything is possible... And in this case, we all know how much "they" want Atlantic's to come back. I personally wouldn't mind an Atlantic/laker/brook trout fishery myself. The snobbery and political end that comes along with a fishery of that type may be a different story

Even in those 'dead' Steel years Tuna and Andy speak of I kept on coming up to fish them-some years zip and some a couple of fish. There were, however, far fewer fisherman- as Tuna points out that has changed with increased Steel populations. Kind of see where in the near future Fewer fishermen could be a natural result of fewer game fishes. Betcha its already happening on the Lake. Another poor Summer and early fall fishery will likely cause many not to come and some pros to fold- not to mention tackle businesses and other related support business. Too bad.

Meanwhile the DSR reports Kings and Coho sighted and a couple caught. Also, back at the end of July HT stated the cleaning station was doing 300 fish/day and lots of fish were being caught,it's a big lake and there's some out there somewhere.

Is this the whole lake or more of an East end thing- seem to recall last year Canada and out West things seemed better. Some may have questioned if it was related to ice over conditions in different places.. Numbers crashed in the other lakes then rebounded - it seemed to be said because of Ontario's Depth it was safe from the 'other lake' conditions- now its us. Tuna or Andy- DSR reported only 6 anglers yesterday 8/27--- is that normal ?? Heck ,have seen more guys than that upriver on August hikes in the past.

Jack, when the cleaning station "reported" 300 fish I know there were 2 pretty major tournaments going on at that time.. My marina had 65 boats in theirs and I think the other tourney was the Oswego pro-am.. I did see lines at the cleaning station, we were there to get ours cleaned.. The fish I seen were 90 % 2 year olds.. Maybe everyone just found that pod of fish and capitalized ? My brother in law has been out on the lake all day today from Oswego to the SR from 180 fow to 115 fow and has not caught anything.. I'm not saying the DSR is hyping things but I know they have the open house this weekend .. There were LOTS of employees preparing for the event all week while I was up there.. I always took their reports very lightly and have no doubt "some" fish hit the river..

Shane Thomas is reporting 20 whacks a day in the past few days in 40-60' Clients had some 20+ kings, along with a few coho and browns. I fished with the dude , he seemed pretty straight and very knowledgeable. Clients aren't calling BS on him. I don't know what's considered good or average, but he seems positive. Of course, he needs a paycheck. Whitakers has good lake reports, too. I guess this all falls under the heading of the BS that everyone says the shops and guides hand out in bad times. I don't expect great guns, just a reduced run. I expect I'll be netting some for you, Jack. That's if you can trust a Polish net man, I put the pointy end in the water.

I seen shane and Johnny both go out this week. They must be great fishers to catch that many and come back in in an hr . Very few were fishing in that shallow on the 2 days I got out or watched from shore when we didn't .

My mistake, Shane's last trip was the 24th. I looked at his last Facebook post that says "today" but actually means the 24th when he posted it. He does say they are out in front of the river . It's a needle in a haystack. I guess the only recourse is to do what Trevor has said many times, just go up and walk the river, fish and see for yourself. I know I've learned more about when the stripers will show from looking at the NOAA buoy data and temp charts and the young-of the year- survey in the Chesapeake. That doesn't apply to the Hudson. I do expect some BS from the guides and shops; we'll see how it progresses. DESCHUTES. I buy stuff from shops on rivers I can spell.

It's no worries Charlie , I seen , follow his reports and the few they are picking off . No doubt there is fish. No doubt in my mind fish are entering the river after that huge west blow most all week . When the lake gets angry like it did , something's happening :)
Char head : bite me because the fish sure aren't biting your garbage . Stick to your own nonsense threads and stay off mine . Have a crappy salmon season !!

No salmon today for my crew . The Mae will have to wait another day . While I don't enter any tournaments I always follow the leader boards . I must take a large bite out of my hat !! Looking at the Loc tournament leader board today . Many large salmon have been weighed in . 1 st place is 30# and 20 th place is 27# .. That's not to shabby . There is still a week to go . Ps. That is lake wide and includes shore anglers .. The thing that really struck me was the Brown trout are blowing the steelhead away . The top steelhead is 18# the second drops to 14 and drastically down from there . The first place brown is 14# and holds pretty steady until 12 th place then 10# at 20th. Pretty darn impressive in my view given the amount of pressure they receive on the lake . I'd love to have another shot at a 2009 brown town season on the fly rod . Just some more Great Lakes ramblings while I take a break from tying flies :)

That would be great!!!!! Haven't found many browns at all, a few here and there, and nothing large. I've been pretty green with envy when I've seen someone land a big brown. That's been a rarity, too. I really haven't had the urge to go fish the zoo aka Oak Orchard. One on the SR would be way better. Thanks and happy tying.

Need some L-13 sauce & hot f'n tuna !! I just don't know , not quite ready to throw my hands up but I hear on the net and my crew reported bumper boat fishing now and last sat which has been wide open seas all season. That stuff has me a bit feeling defeated for the season. I will be heading out tomorrow for another Great Lake adventure , kinda different sorts . Wife will join me and we will patron a local establishment instead of the Mae . I need a bigger boat for her to bunk in comfort (; We shall give it our duo team effort and my goal at this point is avoid the auto idiots and maybe catch a fish. Report to follow

Well we just woke up ( wife is not much for an early start ) and getting ready to head to the Mae . As I walked outside I noticed it was quite breezy and the winds were from the NNW, Humm , the weather guide said SE today and 1' or less. Given this , it's going to be a little bumpy out there and now see they are saying 2' and less which probably means 3 footers. We shall see when we get there and how long she will like riding a roller coaster .. Gotta run , time to go fishing. Will try a update a report throughout the day if the fishing warrents a report . Ps: on the way into Pulaski yesterday we did see quite a few people fishing. Lots of out of state plates and even an Ohio , charcoal head must be honing his skills on some freshly baked salmon .

I think I've been there is it right on the lake north off of route 3? If that's the same place it takes a bit to get to but had good food. We stayed in one of their cabins when everyone else was booked.
