Fished state college this passed weekend. Water is low right now, peaking caddis were hot on penns, small gold or yellow sucker spawn, golden stones, small pheasant tails and frenchies all took fish. Streamer bite was good on spring, midges are always a good choice as well.

Stonefly, caddis, even bluewing olives can hatch in the winter... Small submerged midges, caddis pupa, stones and hares ears... All good stuff... Small... Very small badger matukas as well. Tie them on #8 and 10 nymph hooks if need be. Use young badger rooster or hen knecks to accomodate the smaller size hook

The pictures look like a mess of sowbugs, similar to scuds, and related to the pill bugs you see around house foundations. Not really bugs, more of a crustacean. Trout candy! Do a search on a fly-tying site, there are some patterns for that one.

Always a great hatch, when the sun is out in the afternoon, on those limestone streams in winter. Black midges. I always called them snow midges. Actually some type of caddis. Size 20 and 22. They fit nicely in my "skateing" type of fly drifting ......WF...heck, a lot of freestone streams , also..

We used to use what we called a "snow flea" on those sunny winter days. Basically a #26 or #28 hook wrapped with black midge thread that had been soaked in floatant. 7X with an overly long tippet section to pile up

I can't even see a 28 hook without a magnifying glass anymore!

I haven't done the snow flea thing in years. Two tips -- 1) just lift on the strike, the sharp little point will bury pretty easily, and 2) put a slight bend in the hook point to get it off center of the shank for higher hook up percentages (I actually do that for all flies except streamers).
Back in the day, we actually tied and used some #32 which do not have an eye. An acquaintance of ours was a Surgeon and provided some type of surgical thread that was thinner than 7X and we tied the that as tippet right into the fly.

Good points, Dar. I would just "slip" the line on the water to set the hook....WF...its amazing how you can land a fish on such small hooks.

I hit up Spring Creek with a friend on a warmer day looking for a BWO hatch. It rained and dropped the temps back down, but every fish I caught before that came to the same tan/gray scud pattern. The pattern could easily be used to represent the bugs pictured above.
