Throttle Help

Ran into a small problem over this past weekend. I have a 1990 Yamaha 50hp 2 stroke. When i try to get on the motor it tries to cut out. I have to put the control back to neutral and then go back down again to try to get her going. After a few attempts at this the motor will kick in and i will be able to accelerate.

We looked into it some and my dad could sit in the back of the boat and push the throttle manually and we would go and I would have to steer. When i tried to do it from the controls the motor would cut out after about 15mph. Once the motor got going it would stay going until i put it back into neutral. Is there some type of throttle adjustment? It just started happening. Thanks for help help, Ed

I had a similar experience.  Check the throttle sheath at the motor and the control to make sure it isn't loose.  I was lucky, a bolt vibrated loose and the fix was zero cost.

If you can manually move the throttle on the engine with no issues, it pretty much has to be a linkage/cable issue...

Curiosity killed the cat, but for awhile I was a suspect.

Change those spark plugs before you do anything else. Had that same problem and found that the plugs were the only problem. When's the last time you put new plugs in?

Throttle cable for sure. Could be in the control end or the motor end. Only 1 way to find out....Tear it apart..

Eman you need to check those spark plugs just to see. I had one plug in my 50 hp Yamaha that had the porcelian insulator broken around the center electrode. The porcelian was still there but had cracked and would spin around the electrode. If I throttled up slowly the motor would run with a slight miss. If I put the hammer down and tried to put the boat up on plane quickly the motor spit. sputtered and almost stall. New or not, check them plugs. Good luck and happy fishing.

So my dad can push the throttle in the back and it runs good. But it could still be a sparkpproblem? Im wondering if its not just an adjustment..

With out seeing how your dad is throttle up the motor I am going to do some guessing. I am guessing he is moving the linkage to open the carbs? If the motor runs fine with him doing this, by fine I mean like everything as it was "normal".

Do what other have said check your cables, keep your hood off and with the motor off go from neutral to forward and reverse taking the throttle lever to the extremes. Watch the linkage in the motor, see if they are following the movement from your control box. Try to wiggle and see if the cable is messed up. From what it sound this is a long shot but very easily tested and free.

So if your cable is fine and your motor runs fine with a man at the motor opening throttle, I think its electrical. I am thinking its the neutral start switch, it may be on its last leg and possibly telling the motor to shut down. I believe that switch grounds out ignition if in gear. That would a switch I would check out. Examine all your wires, check to make sure nothing is hitting your key switch it might sound silly but that could be lose as well or something in the control box has worn enough to trip the key or neutral start.

Try different things like have it running in gear and turn the key off, or try to start it in gear. Most likely you will not see a smoking gun, but it might turn up a clue.

What gets me is the motor runs fine (I am assuming) when manually opens the throttle, but not at control box. silly question does the motor have an air box, or vents in the hood. maybe something is restricting air flow that isn't in place if run manually.

Snap some pics of the motor if you can.

Yes long shaft yes opening linkage. He takes the cal off. Dont believe it has air box.. will try to get a pic I just think it has to be linkage or that cable

Hey Ed Make sure you check everything these guy's mentioned. Don't make no Adjustment to the carburetor AIR/FUEL mix Or Idle. It is not very often thats the problem, Those screws are spring loaded making them almost impossible to loosen by themselves.   Is the boat in the water and under pressure when your Dad is working the throttle ????

It would also be interesting if the throttle linage under the hook is linked to the adjustable ignition. If it isn't (I had some mercs that were not) and you can open the throttle with out advancing the ignition that could be your problem. When you advance the throttle at the helm the cable is adjusting the timing and opening the throttle. It might be the ignition timing is good enough when the throttle is opened manually, but when the run from the control box the ignition adjusts along with the throttle and could cause it to run poorly in the form of wanting to shut off. Maybe it is advancing to quickly for the amount of fuel being put in.

Something could have gone out of adjustment, or fell off. A link and sync check would tell you that.
