I hate to bash the boys in green--but I could have made that many arrests in 1 day. What went on this yr was the worst I've seen since snaggin was outlawed.

Having a good ole time! used my snoeshoes and backpacked my waders and tackle down to the sportsman pool 1/2 hr before sunup. forgot my wool hat and gloves, but got my thermos  of hot cocoa and baloney sandwich. Sure is chilly and awefully quiet on this snow bank about midway out into the main channel, sure hope it doesn't give! been here allday and not a nimble! my pocket computer cell phone is going dead and it is after 4pm.. i best be packing it in and heading back to mc donalds for a much anticipated hot value meal before gasing her up for the trip back to new jeresey!

They make it seem like the business owners have say in how many fines get handed out. Kinda like an old Wild West Town. Sure we want a sherrif to keep the peace, we just don't want him to change our way of life.
What a shame. They could make a mint if they enforced. People would feel the need to fish instead of snag in the near future.

He said they respond to complaints from ethically fishing anglers. Did you leave the river and call?

Tha last post was directed at slayer, but 3 others hit while I was typing.  Who'd of thought!

There was one tale floating around back when the lower river went off limits for treble hook snagging about a guy who got hauled in, fined $250, all tackle confiscated, and was back on the river later that day with a brand spanking new outfit purchased in town.  Back then they didn't have a computerized license system, but now the license could get pulled, but that might not stop someone hell bent on slapping 25 lbs of black grody salmon on a downstate or PA bar!

I must say that the DEC was not trying too hard since they only fined what they say.I agree with slayer, they should have written that many in one day,not the whole season.Stand anywhere on the lower river last year and it was not hard to see.

Keep in mind that when you are watching, the nonsense continues. When the DEC is watching, and writing, the nonsense abates, ( at least temporarily ). You can OBSERVE it all day, but the DEC can only bust a few before THEY are busted.

Spoon,if they wanted to they could bust a dozen or so in one swoop being "undercover",then go up or down a bit and nail another dozen.Charter a bus to haul them off to the Judge, fine the heck out of them, then maybe things would change!......"Dream On" as peacy would say

How about the wall at the big O. They could haul all the rail rippers off, then come back in a 1/2 hour and get the next bunch. Town pool wall rats could work the same way.
240 or whatever tickets in a season is an insult. I'm sure that would be a good months work for one agent, but the whole agency? Pffff.

First you hop in your jetsled and run high speed through where everyone is fishing. It stirs them up and puts them on the bite (the fishermen too).

Actually it was the closest sound I could think of (with that smiley) simulating holding one nostril and blowing snot on all these people that think they can legally catch salmon in a crowded situation!!!!

    Fellas,

There are two ways to stop snagging. The first is education for those who want to learn. This can prove invaluable, particularily when a snagger becomes a fisherman.

The second is to dramatically increase the fine base and the amount of DEC/law enforcement present during salmon season. The only way to really stop it is to make it financially burdensome (higher dollar fines, loss of all fishing tackel, car), jail time, community service, loss of all fishing/hunting license (just to name a few). The present fine structure is a pitance.

Also how many DEC officers were on the SR during the height of salmon season?? How can the wardens really do there job. There are just undermanned!!! And this is just for the SR. What about the rest of our rivers.

Well there's your biggest problem. Lose the crowds & gain the bite. Any fish that's getting lead tossed at it all day is going to clam up.
And no I have no secrets. I'd rather leave them & go after what's behind.

Salmon can be legally caught in crowded conditions with a decent river flow if the crowd is FISHING for them, not slinging heavily weighted lines and ripping/lifting on every cast.Last season was a travisty with the extremely low water.
Foxfire,I'm with you, educate those that will listen and fine and punish the slobs that don't give a ****.
