Actually one early sept day last season in that particular area I had the whole run to myself and had fish moving thru all day. Was a banner early season fly swinging day and knowone to share it with, my first trip up every year is august 15 unless the water is super low and warm.

this is very interesting to me. what if i rigged some good 8lb seaguer onto my pfleuger noodle rod combo? can a first timer come up and just wing it? maybe find a cheap campground or sleep in a parking lot somewhere? are the crowds really that bad?

The parking lot sleeping thing will likely get you a ticket, or if you are lucky, shagged out and a warning.  But Stoney's campground is cheep, and that early there are some nicer ones still open as well.  Also, even though there is a ton of NYS land nearby, all of it I know of is State Forest land, and camping is by permit only, so you would have to find out who the ranger is for the area, and write for a permit in advance, and , unless you knew the State forest you intended to camp in, you might have a real challenge finding a  site.  You are up there to fish and sleep, so an inexpensive private site, or a site at Selkirk Shores State Park , on the lake just south of SR, is your best bet.

Dime,

As far as those dead early fish, you could also say from the estuary to 81, as a lot of the DSR paying folks are not the most ethical when it is Salmon season.  Admittedly, it is a gauntlet from the Black Hole to 81, but a lot of those guys are roping their fish, too,  and a lot quit once they have the limit, so much of the mortality could be attributable to multiple C+R stress.  I think it should be 5 salmon per day, you keep everything you catch, and you stop fishing once you have your limit, but what do I know (and I don't even start thinking about going to the river until after Columbus day, although that might change if I retire end of September.)

Lucky, days I was down in dsr in august and early september with no one in sight, I'd drive up to haledane afterwards to see a whipping fest... the most dead fish I saw last season early on was in the town pool... you are right to an extent, but from what I see, town bridge to 81 kills the most fish... even on the weekend after labor day I fished dsr on a Saturday with no more than 10 people in sight on a half mile stretch... town to 81 was mobbed...

Have been up around 81 at the crack of dawn and seen fish drift back down and go belly up. They weren't dying because of C &R as it happens so early hardly no one is around fishing yet.
It was just their time---think the run up through the long low areas in low water is just too much for some of them early in the season. Fortunately there aren't too many areas like that elsewhere in the river. And/or the weak ones get culled out by nature real soon.
Of course C & R has an affect -but its not the whole picture.

once you put three salmon on a stringer on the DSR, you're done for the day and must stop fishing....It doesn't matter if it's 5pm or 7 am....I've seen them enforce it too.

Heck yes we can get it up in the DSR,as long as we don't get too far up,like not to the Meadow. With the 40# line we can crank them in on our tuna rods.....maybe chartist would like to join us then no one can move into his "spot"

Rich....did you try night crawlers for the Stripers?........you gotta show them something different.

We seen a few boated today but nothing hot. Only 12" bait for us but like said , shakedown cruise for the islander. Bigger and better plans ahead

Used sand worms drifted under a float  for a long time night fishing Stripers  in the Thames-killer bait- Lawn crawlers were free but didn't last too long in the brackish water. Might think they would last long enough up the Hudson. We fished them W/o weight 3 to 4 ft below the bobber and hooked up high in the head so they dangled  and worked a bit in the current..

What's I'd really like to do is head to Florida  for Tarpon season.....Think I'll make some calls to some captains to see if there's a charter looking for an extra to defray costs...If any of you guys know of a south Fla captain specializing in tarpon, let me know.....

ok guys were are going test our luck and go the 5-6.  Were staying at Double Eagle so we will fish behind there in the am and adjust according throughout the day.  Last question are there any tips on what I should be fishing with as far a hook size?  Do I just tie a hook onto a leader with a salmon egg?  I mostly use spoon for trout but it looks like I can't do that here so I was just looking for what to have in my tackle box.

I mainly fish flies.
For salmon its most often streams on 5 or 6x long shanks but am usually lower on the river than you are talking.
Big and bright.
The longer they have been in the river the more shellshocked they become.
Farther up I fish mostly 4 or 6s 2 or 3x long.
On the other hand I took a number of kings in the lfz on 5-6 inch long intruder flies tied on 7x  long streamer hooks with the hook cut off and a #2 trailer hook.

Good luck to you as that early can be totally hit or miss.
Rarely a full on run going on at that time but pods of fish can be anywhere.

I have caught salmon early on spoons, I just change the hook out to a #1 (largest allowed). I just re read the regs and it seems it would be legal.

Spoons , spinners, any lure that does not float has to have a single point hook, so as Clint says, you will need to swap out the treble for a single point, best (I think) is a Siwash style with a ring eye, no more than 1/2" gap (size can vary, the wardens will check with a ruler if you are the lucky one picked for a check).  Spoons work well in slow deep holes, but a lot of the river is like a big trout stream, and you might find egg flies or streamers easier to fish in the shallower flows.  If you have a room at the double eagle, they'll tell you what you need, and probably sell it to you, or send you to Whitaker's.

If spin fishing size 4 or 6 Blackbirds with Boraxed Skein using an egg loop or bomber bags in a natural cure(will even go up to golf ball size bags if I can make them).  Now if you are buying versus tying then you will probably be limited to what size bags you can purchase.  One thing is get the 2x hooks if you are going with a mustad.  I've had size snap owners and gammy's.

Not a lot of single egg fishing on Ontario to my knowledge or at least on the eastern streams.
Other option is  8 or 10 mm beads or even egg flies/estaz but earlier in the season like that matching the hatch might be tough hence bunny flies/wolly buggers i.e. not a lot of eggs in the water shed if any hence why I go later in the run much later.  Not as many fresh fish per se but I don't keep them and prefer to fish Steel so the later you go the better you odds of getting a brown, chrome, and salmon.
