What size hook and estaz material ?
All new to me. Want to try fly fishing the SR next year. So between now and the I will tie up a s***load of flies. Probably estaz egg patterns that I read so much about. Questions. A) What size hook and any particular style and B) What size estaz material? I see this sites' sponsor carries 2 sizes 1- reg. and 1- grande?

For fall I like size 6 sometimes 8's and Grande. I think the regular does not plump out as good as the grande. I have used Mustad 37132, 9174, CO68. I have even used some Wal mart specials Octopus hooks I got for $2.

I use a size 10 or 12 Mustad egg hook, super strong on the SR and have used the Grande but prefer the regular for egg imitation.Color is most important and you need a rainbow of colors as you never know what the color of the day is going to be.

pafisher is the master at having all the right flies in shapes, size and color.. as for estaz, there used to be such a thing as regular estaz.. Now it's all sorts of names so I really like to "look" at the material.. All Seasons in pulaski has every thing a tier could dream.. If I'm tying a buggy pattern such as wooly, the estaz grand in peakok works well.. Sometimes patterns such as a head of a scud the small estaz works.. Honestly it's tough ordering materials "on line".. Hook sizes vary as well.. My smallest size 8 mustad might be a 10 in another brand.. For eggs , I try and stick to an 8 or 10 .. Tend to like egg yarn better though for eggs then estaz.. I have used a 6 sucker spawn in fall & spring.. Welcome aboard.. Good folks here to share with.. Peace & Tuna

I had fantastic success using 1/0 for salmon this year. Black absolutely slayed them in the lfz while pink was fantastic in the DSR.

1/0 must be pushing the 1/2 inch gap regulation to its limit. Don't have one bend out even the slightest or there is no doubt you could be budted.

1/0 looks to be just under a half inch.....Plus, mine were on red colored hooks. I think the color contrast helped.

Yeah they're about 1/32nd under. I've found lots in fins, bellies and backs. Must be popular. I think the ones with a wrap or 2 of yarn really must work. With the proper amount of weight of course. 4 lead #5's about right?

If you are right fichy 1/32 isn't much to bend out on a snag to be past the 1/2 inch limit. I would be very careful if it were me.

I measured the Mustad 24007 and 11's I use in the salt- they are a hair under. I checked my Orvis 9304's and they are clearly over the 1/2 inch. I'd just drop to a 1 or a 2 and have plenty of hook if it were me.

I'm pretty much a 6 to 2 guy myself. I had a gammy needle point octo #4 on my cut shanks the other day but am thinking a 2 might be a better bite. Thoughts?

A word of caution because I had an encounter a few years back with a plain clothes EnCon officer in Pineville regarding the legality of a fly I was using. I was swinging a big fly that I had tied called a Butt Monkey. The fly had no added weight except for a set of barbell eyes. The body and head are made of zonker strips and sculpin wool, once wet hold a great deal of water. It took my best verbal skills to argue that the fly was in fact legal to avoid a summons. I did prevail but it took some doing.

TB what was the issue with the fly? Size of gap? No material on trailer hook?

2b, neat vid. That's Andersen below Redding, Ca. I've never fished Kings there, but have caught some great football rainbows fattened up on the eggs. I miss Norcal.

Twobob- The officer insisted that the fly was too heavy. He asked me to drop it in the calm, shallow water next to the bank and as it immediately sank to the bottom he said it had too much weight. The fly/streamer was tied on a #4 Tiemco 200R, no trailer involved, certainly within the guidelines regarding hook gap size. He went on to say that he was watching me for a while and admitted that I was not lining, lifting or doing anything illegal. In the course of our conversation he said that he wasn't a fisherman and wasn't sure as he looked through the syllabus while trying to contact another officer. I showed him the same version of the fly that was entirely dry and plead my case. The whole encounter was very strange but thankfully worked in my favor.

I didn't know they could count the weight of absorbed water as part of the weight of the fly. Man was an idiot. With the blatant snagging that goes on being unchecked he decides to (wrongly) harass you.

Yes I cannot imagine that. Was it a newbie right out of the academy from NYC or something. I will ay though at least a) he let you plead your case and b) he admitted he did not know and was not a fisherperson. Some of these guys have either had enough bs from the entire season and just are sick of it or compete Richardheads to begin with

This officer was no rookie having well over ten years with DEC and other police agencies. This event was well before the peak season in the second week of September 2011. Clint, you might have the same fly in your collection. It is in the bunch I sent you summer before last before your trip to Sacandaga.
