Sandy Creek

Anyone have info on Sandy? Are the fish there yet?

It is still way too warm, too little water.  You can get an idea of when things get possible by watching the USGS website for the Genesee at Ford Street.  When the Temperature readout on the river gets below about 65, fish will start nosing up the Genesee.  A good rain after that will have them starting into the other streams.  But October into November is really the time on the South Shore of LO (except for the Oswego, which already has a few fish.)  I was on the Driving Park Bridge over the Gennie yesterday, and there were no fishers, and no fish (although they could be there and be hidden by the turbidity.)  But the water is still too warm for them, too.

Word yesterday was that there are large numbers of fish off the mouth and the spoon chuckers on the piers at the mouth of the Genesee are having luck even during the early and late daylight hours, so this cold snap and rain we have coming this weekend could start the run in the Genesee, and if there is enough runoff to push Sandy there will be a start on the salmon there as well.

Thanks guys. Please keep me updated. I'll probably only get one chance to come up.

If I only had one chance to hit WNY, I would wait until October, and risk not hitting the early salmon, but maybe hitting peak on the browns and early chromers.

Planning a trip for Oct 5. Any predictions concerning what the fishing in Sandy will be like? I'm talking about the Sandy that is by The Oak, North of Rochester.

Rain can change everything but I would keep the Oak as an alternative.
Creeks are still pretty low round here.

Twobob, thanks for the report. Doesn't look like any rain until Sunday.

Muskie, I will definitely do that. Maybe I'll get you and Pen's cell #'s before I leave and we can hook up on the water.

The Genesee is bouncing around between about 600 and 100 cfs, but the temperature was up around 63, so even though the fish are there, they'll be tight lipped.  If you are coming for salmon (and they are really the only game yet), try to get some skein, I'm also hearing that spoons and hardware like blue foxes are working, but make sure you change out to a single point hook.  But I still advise that if you can only make one trip, and you want to fish Sandy, I'd wait a while longer (I know that jobs don't work like that, but...)  Or keep the Genesee and the Oak as possible substitutions for Sandy, as there is almost no water there, and it is a fish here and a fish there.

Last time I was down to the GR was last Tuesday and there were fish, but they were not up on any gravel, so it is not " full".  I know there were people down there over the weekend because when I went to get the new license (DON'T FORGET, YOU NEED ONE TOMORROW!) the store owner was doing a primer on eggs and single hook lures for a couple of women who wanted to get some salmon.  Reports for the Oak are some fish, but we really need a bunch of rain and cold nighttime temps to bring them in big time.   I did not fish this weekend because it was nearly 80, and I can't see any action happening when the water temps are pushing 65, they get inactive just like when it pushes 32.

Ok, so I still haven't solidified my plans. I was waiting to see if the rain would hit and raise the streams. Anyone out there that can give me a report? Did the rain raise the streams? I'm praying for rain and good news.

Don't know Slab but it doesn't look good.
20 minutes away we had a nice steady rain but not enough to really do any good for the streams.
We need a downpour or several days of steady rain.

Murphy's Law of weather watching and trying to outguess the runs.  Yesterday Rochester International Airport got 0.92" and a lot of it came in two short squalls.  Bound to have triggered some activity, and there is more in the in the forecast today, with nice weather the rest of the week.  No reports from my friends out on Sandy, and Irondequoit Creek did not go up a lot, so this may have been patchy, but soon they will be in the low end of Sandy whether there is rain or not.  Just watch the posted signs, you can't be in the stream if the banks are posted, and these folks do call.

Spoke to someone in another part of town, and the rain was patchy, so it may not have started a full blown run in  Sandy, but if you come up now and Sandy isn't fishing, there is still the Oak, and the Genesee has fish.

Friend fished  Tuesday at Redman Road, muddy flows, said he hed a king go b y about every 5 minutes, no biters, not holding, guy fishin eggs across the stream also had no action, no trout, no cohos seen.  It has started out there, but it will continue to modulate with fish coming on rain and things being concentrated in the estuary when it is dry, which it will be pretty much for the next week.

Smally, are there still fresh salmon or are they all zombies? The main reason I come up is for salmon. I'm thinking this weekend, possibly. Thanks folks.

Orleans Outdoors reports  "There is a mix of fresh and some moldy salmon now, and many fish  are spawning" in the Oak.  You should probably find a few fish, especially with this rain and more in the forecast, and the browns are also coming on now.

I was thinking of heading up around the oak Nov-3-13,  Have no clue what conditions are like.  Once again no one to fish with.  When you work all weekends and have your days off during the week you lose all of your good friends,  But hey a good job is hard to come by now aw days.

I wish are country would get it together economically wise.  We still live in the best but it would be nice to see things turn around.
