Doves
I've been watching all the doves flying around, and now that we are getting down to almost a month away I'm getting the itch. I will be soon going to my spot and setting up my blind. Sitting over a water hole the last two years have been deadly the first couple days. Or until they get smart and leave. Anyone else out there hunt doves and if you do what's your favorite way of cooking them? Last year we cooked them on the smoker with bacon wrapped around them. Very good. But I'm willing yo try any other ideas.

Hunted them regularly as a kid and young guy here in CT- loved sitting in hedgerows by harvested fields and pass shooting them.
Then the State of Ct declared them a ###@#@# song bird. THAT was the end of THAT.

Our group shot 120 on the first day 2 years ago. Didn't have as many guys last year and only ended up with 40. Throw them in a frying pan with vegetable oil, peppers, onions, a little garlic, salt, and pepper. Cook them for a while on low heat. It's real good!

A friend once went to South America on a Dove hunt. Said ya couldnt carry enough ammo and they had guys who ran around and picked them all up after the hunt.
Each evening everyone involved had a cookout He said the number of birds was unbelievable.

I've never hunted them before, but I plan to try for a few this year. I've done a fair amount of reading, so we'll see how it goes!

Bring lots of ammo Cold! My average is about 1 dove for 8 or 9 shots.

Love hunting a good dove field,but in the last 10-12 years only had one year that was good ,my son and I shot 72 on three straight days then to much shooting so they went bye-bye.Great little bird to hunt and eat. Seems to me we target the larger birds ( geese in Sept.) but still would be nice to hunt a good dove field or roost spot. Back in the 70's we pounded them,I bought shells by the case.

Well who else is going out this weekend?
I was planning on sleeping in, getting some food in my gut, and getting there around 11...until I realized the early goose season was in too, so it's looking more like Monday morning will resemble a typical fall weekend...up in the wee hours, running on coffee.

Were going after doves rather than going after geese. A lot of our farms are cutting next week so were gonna give it another week on the geese.

I use to do a lot off dove hunting and would take a lee load all out in the field with me and make shells as I hunted, use to get a lot of the little buggers and they are tasty .

The more I think about it, I might do the same thing. I hope to make a scouting trip or two to the area I plan to hunt before Monday, and if I don't actually see geese, I'll probably wait.

If any of you guys find a good field, I would definately make the drive. You cant have too many hunters in a dove field. The more the better IMO.

those guys around erie are very serious about their dove hunting. i watched what looked to be 30 guys around the grape vine on route 5. i dont know if they where pushing the vines for them or what, but there where hunters everywhere right off the road and they where shooting all day. ive never seen nothing like it.

Did a quick scout of the area I plan to hunt Monday. I know the ground well, but have never hunted it for doves. Ended up not being as many as I'd hoped, mostly because I usually only see it in the fall after the fields are cut, and now they're still up.
Even so, I did kick up a decent little flock in one of the two spots I expected to see them. Within 15 minutes or so they settled right back in.
I plan to make one more scouting run Sunday, and if they're still there, that's where I'm setting up on Monday.

I bet you that was us. If it was around North East in the Grapes i guarantee you it was. We usually get a crowd of about 15 guys for opening day. Last year we whacked about 120.
