neaphyte Hey DW whats the word on the flashy new lodge going into the Schoolhouse? I heard last November. We {the general public, taxpayers, and license holders} were going to lose the Schoolhose pool and several hundred feet more downriver! dukewayne I heard its still in development, partially because Altmar itself is going to be dissolved as a town completely. I heard Barkley has a hand in it some how. But also some problems are coming up with the Altmar Fire Department being dissolved and having a huge hotel or resort there with no fire/rescue within 8+ miles of it. Thats not good at all, you're looking at 20minute+ respond time from Orwell, Williamstown, and Pulaski. Yeah Altmar is a small department, but with something like that ever minute matters. I'll talk to some people and get you guys an update.

SSGT- Theyre building something that looks like a path that looks like the wall now across from yankee fly, after it fell. Not sure if its a path to walk on or whatever, or a retaining wall due to the Kallet theater being rebuilt and theyre worrying about flooding and such. It starts behind the End Zone and goes to about 40 yards from the short bridge. I'll take some pics and post them asap.

Hey Duke- I know Altmar had that vote about dissolving the town and morphing into another around a year or two back- Do you know the story there?? Recall reading about spending too much on the FD and a couple of part time snow plow guys and its affect on the tax rate being the BIG issues behind the vote. WOW -If the towns most of us live in had such "issues' lol. Recall thinking some dont know how good they actually got it.

Hey RG they did not dissolve the town, just the village of. It all about residents paying village tax and not receiving anything the town could not provide. average village resident will save $150 per 50k assessment. Town of will also receive state consolidation aid which is given out when towns and villages consolidate. The state consolidation aid will save the average town of resident only about 25 dollars per 50k.

Looks like the folks are a few dollars a year better off - thats good- but are the fire and plowing jobs still there ??? It appeared with Dukes note that the Fire Dept is in doubt and that may already be having negative affect. Without local plows there may well be backlash there too- if they were cut. The question is wether or not what your giving up is worth the respite. Public safety comes first-IMHO- and the old news reports about the vote indicated it seemed to be what they were mostly complaining about.. Gotta wonder if anybody checked with Insurance folks about higher rates due to much longer response times by the FD =the new responders being miles away -as Duke suggested- and perhaps responding on poor local roads during the regular harsh weather up there.. Property owners may well find that at the end of the day they arent saving what they predicted in the pocket and may suffer greater risk as well.. Good luck with that -- different strokes---

Unfortunately what has happened with the fire department is the need for money to upgrade equipment, but the backlash is from people who have seasonal homes in altmar that dont wanna pay the tax increase thats needed cause theyre not their year around which effects the true locals. I'm not sure exactly how much is needed, but I do believe that you dont slack on necessities like a fire department or town workers that do work like snow plowing and such.

Dont get it- as a part time resident over near the Richland Store I dont get a vote. Am NOT a full time resident and am a registered voter here in Ct where my full time residence is--not there.. Cant see how part time folks like me could ever get involved in a vote on such a matter affecting a community. Recall the paper reported a leading voice in the movement to consolidate due to those services costs a year or so back was a corner store/gas station owner. Wonder what their insurance is gonna go up to ??? NOT sayin consolidation is a bad thing- especially in todays fiscal climate- just be careful what ya ask for. If folks voted with their pocketbooks alone and dont care about the other stuff - oh well.

http://www.cgr.org/report...marDissolutionPlan.pdf Here is a long read on the village dissolution plan made by an independent . From my understanding the Village FD was one of the players behind the push for this as most of their funding came from the town contracting for their services anyway. Being a village dept (although volunteer) they have been limited on avenues for funding. As far as plowing the roads the town takes care of that for the village. Vote would have been for village residents only. The vote was 80 to 74. 65 percent of the village's 239 registered voters showed up to vote. That being said the "out of towners " IMO had little to do with it as it was only up to those 239 registered voters. It was about duplication of services and saving money. The only ting the village had to really offer was fire protection and taking care of the sidewalks and cemeteries. Fire co will now be Town vol. fire co. Town will take care of roads (as it already does) and cemeteries and residents will be in charge of their own sidewalks.

The proposed New York freshwater regulation changes for 2014-2016 are up on the NYDEC web site. Sorry I don't know how to post the link from my phone so hopefully someone will.
There are a LOT of changes to the finger lakes region so it may be of interest to L-13. Very few things for the Lake O tribs. and really nothing new for the Salmon River at all. Just a few more defined definitions of "words" . As for ice fishing , I hope they standardize and go with the max number of lines. It makes perfect sense and less confusion.
Have a look around and this is the time to voice your opinion or forever ( well 2 years ) hold your peace

Thanks for the tip, HT, I'll have to check it out. WE all went with the Rainbow limit change figuring it was based on good data and then found out they wanted "regional consistency." I would hope they up it to 2 or I may just buy a PA license next year and ta H w NY. L13

Would think that when they are finished with the project it will be very nice- just like the similar ones recently completed on the river. Its refreshing to see the others were designed with fishermen in mind although the core reason seemed to be erosion control. With the flooding in recent years its nice to see those kind of commitments on river preservation.

The DEC has got a boat load of money set aside for stream restoration and improvement projects. Don't know if this ( they) are included in what's going on. NYS on the other hand is flat broke and has cancelled many of their highway construction projects due to funding. My son gat a job at an asphalt plant and they are dead slow just waiting for the green light.

I would put my monies on it being done to protect the upriver side of the short bridge with am minor in fishermens usage. That area never appealed to me from a FISHING aspect. Great spot for a 12 weight and 5 #2 shot on low water but thats not me.

I've never fished the area in town or up through the ballpark because its always crowded and there doesn't appear to be enough room to play a fish. It may have been a good spot during the snagging days with fifty pound test but that was never my cup of tea.

It fishes Ok from there up to 81 in late August -if the fish come in-before the circus come to town. IMHO after the first advertised push - OUTA there. Just a place to get pizzed. Later its good for some laughs- kinda like looking down at Tressel- best enjoyed with a dry rod back in the truck and knowing what your likely to see before the walk..

I have had good success in late oct to dec after the circus and before the deep freeze. It's pretty decent fly in the pocket water and nice float or bottom bounce above the clam shed. Trout of course. Mostly transition water , hit or miss. Salmon there ? Nah

Just got back in from a few days in Paradise-Mowing the lawn ( aka haylot)-spraying the apple trees again and general maintenance after far too long away -again. HEY- in regard to 'local news'- that new wall above town and below the island at the Needle looks GREAT. Ya cant really get a good read on it from the web-cam because its so long and partially hidden by that little island but it is some real nice stonework. It would only be directly along the waters edge in high conditions so isnt a fishing platform like we see in LFZ or the Town pool but of the same design- just longer with ramps down to the river. Also some strong talk about a walking trail along the Staircase and possibly all the way up to the Town Pool. Some inuendeau about the Ballpark seeing some changes too-. Some kind of PFR agreement with the Town and State at some point in at least a part of the lower areas may be on the future table too. Seems some is still in the talking and planning stages and some in the planning --all NICE. The fella with the info- as is my usual- will not be named -never give up a snitch lol. If its anything like the work over the past year GOOD. Also GOOD that with recent issues making some of us wonder bout the future of river acess. Looking like the state and Town are looking foreward in our interest-Thanks.

Schoolhouse- work is going on and appears to be both inside and out. After parking and looking a bit I just gotta say even though the work appears to be happening on several fronts its far from frantic. Unless am really missing something didnt think this season is on their radar- for a hotel, eatery, convention or meeting place.. Perhaps a pay to play ?? Kings- gotta still read lake reports lol. Personally have had hit and miss low river luck third week of August depending on the yearly conditions . Aside from a once in a blue moon year it stays that way for a couple of more weeks too. Picky at best -and be early in the AM too. Not any experience that early the DSR where they may be more likely to pop in and out a bit real low. Still take the hikes and cast away trying.

Wouldnt be a bit surprised this year Bob. The water has occasionally run kinda nicely this Summer and it appears to have a nice flow right now too. Not that steady 185 for weeks at a time. Gotta wonder bout the heat wave though. Flows may bring in a scout here and there but actual biters ??? Agree with whoever said they seem to hit better when in a group. Personally think its an instinctive competetive response they arent quite so quick to display when alone. Those one at a time fish are like looking at a photo all too often- Nice to see but no action. lol. Despite what some may think of Kings- they do seem to represent 'the beginning'. Like waiting for Santa----- keeps me young -( well-- at least in in my mind)
