Some Changes (Local News)

Cause I'm a local and you guys are the type of people i enjoy having around here fishing (anti-snagging and we're all sportsman) ill give you guys some news that is happening around here since the end of the season.

1) Yankee Fly has a For Sale sign on the door. I dont think I need to say any more than that.

2) River Changes. Between the short bridge and the ball park (behind Salmon River Sports Shop) they are adding more stone to I assume keep the banks from falling down more due to the flooding. It basically looks like the "Wall" after it fell. On top of the water going up and down practically every day I'm sure there are some more changes cause I've found alot of odd stuff on the shore behind my house, a Gas Grill top being one of them. So i would anticipate some trees and holes changing from last year.

3) Restaurants. LD's Alehouse is now on main street where Storytellers used to be. They serve some really good food, and the ladies are nice to look at. Try the Chargrilled Wings, or The Fresca Burger. Trust me... im a fat guy.

4) Possible new bar. Earls, which is next to Mr.Subs is being renovated now, possibly by Salmon Season it will be finished. And for you old timers that knew the bar when it was open. Rumor has it the original bar itself is being restored.

Welcome to the group Duke.Let me guess...you are a John Wayne fan
I'll be looking forward to visiting the new eating spots, really get tired of the Ponderosa .
From what I see on the flow guage it was at 3000 for a bit.Any kayakers try that flow? If this weather continues we should have some great fishing come Sept.

I enjoy a John Wayne movie, but my screen name is actually from Boondock Saints 2, but its in reference of John Wayne.

But the river has been up and down quite a bit, a couple kids went down tubing wednesday, rafters i believe saturday, so i imagine some kayakers will be down this weekend.

I'm gonna drive up to reservoir this weekend and check the depth, im kinda wondering if theyre making a mistake and letting the river up and might pay for it later in the fall.

Thanks for the updates Duke-much appreciated.
The last Duke I knew up that way worked for Jim Rusher at Whitakers.

Duke used to spend some Summers in Ct and stay with a friend of his  along the coast ( forget which City) and work and golf. We were always gonna hook up for some Blues but never go to it.
He was a good guy and a friend.
Lost track of him after Jims place changed hands.

I fished with the "Duke" a few times and if I remember correctly his given name was Charles.  Big golfer and he also played minor league baseball.

I'd welcome a doubling of the DSR price....It gets a little crowded down there, even at $45 a day......Frankly, I'd fish it at 3x the current rate, I'd just skip buying a NY fishing license...they can't enforce it anyway.

I knew a warden who loved to work DSR just looking for the No License A******s.  And say something like that in front of  a Pulaski JP, he'll make sure you don't forget the area.  Attitudes like yours make us NY residents that paid to create this fishery cheer for $200 Nonresident fees and 50% income tax rates.  Stay home and abuse your own state!

You are right Jack the daily rate was increased to $50 per for the 2013 Silly Season.  The increase came on the heels of DSR sending out a survey to those who frequent their website.  I guess they had to raise the rates to pay the company conducting the study.  LOL  Or perhaps to pay for the new love shack they built recently.

I think the top Federal rate is 38%. Add in the NYS income tax, sales tax, sin taxes, property tax, gas tax, it is a wonder we get the gas money to drive to SR together.

Rich people who want to use their money to exclude others from the publicly funded fishery are not harmless, they are dangerous.  The mess in Pa is testimony to that.

I've been taken to the DSR by a friend a few times, and I've also been down there before getting chased away... I'll admit its nice to not be so crowded, but its also nice to be able to save some money for more important things. Unfortunately its only gonna get worse, cause well... money talks. The greed this state has and how this town wouldnt be anything if it wasnt for fishing is kinda sickening in away.

But also at the same point, its gotten bad that this world has became nothing but constant negativity. I cant watch the news anymore without hearing something bad happening. Which goes for the same thing here in town. One or Two ****s who do what they want and not care what anyone thinks and then disappear again until next season is whats causing people to buy property and post it.

But the good thing is, there are guys like you all here who actually have some respect for the rules, the people, and enjoy fishing. Its just the few bad ones that ruin it for us good guys.

    End Rant.

    Re:Some Changes (Local News) 2013/07/02 17:41:05 (permalink)
28 yrs as a cop and 10 in elected office after that has taught me one thing- NOBODY has the nuts to actually confront the real issues and people who cause them.
Sooooo much easier just to infringe on the masses than to deal with the actual troublemakers.
IE- those very few who trash it up and other despicable behavior and cause those posted signs and restrictions on  us all because of their actions.
Those are also the ones who ignore those signs and continue their behavior because they are 'taught' that its Ok- they can get away with it.
Have said it here before on the trash issue- easy enough to just sit there in any lot and arrest those who litter- then make it a VERY well publicized thing- kinda like the John of the week in the inner city. -never happened and never will in SR country.. Too simple.
Here the State gets bout $300 for the formal arrest and the Town can get bout 50 bucks for the local ordinance ticket option. Failure to pay the ticket gets ya an arrest warrant.
Pulaski or Altmar could hire a constable or even an off duty officer and make a few bucks with the ordinance tickets- would be like candy from a baby in those lots or just walking crowded places on the river.
Some would go home and never pay up - next year when buying their license WARRANT SERVICE TIME lol. THAT would have IMPACT.

Gotta hire the 'right ' people too -parking a marked car or standing around in a uniform in a lot will result in No infractions-  folks arent that dopy- gotta just sit back in a normal vehicle and then pounce.
    Sorry bout the shouting----
Hey- those darned outa stater fishermen  even trash up my front strip all year long-gotta do trash duty before mowing--and its 3 miles from the river-Hmmmm

Now am all fired up so will tell a story-
Last Winter was picking up trash in the LFZ lot and a guy threw some stuff on the ground right in front of me- only a couple of feet. I got fired up and was abut to do something dumb when I looked up at a Warden getting outa his marked vehicle a few feet behind the guy-ahhhh' says I JUSTICE is about to unfold before my very own eyes. The warden had just drove in and was looking right at both of us from about 20 feet- NO WAY did he miss the throw.
They each walked off in different directions. Being a polite and genteel person I loudly shouted some nasties bout somebodys heritage - not caring which one took it personal as it was intended for both of them. Neither had the guts to turn around.
     Guilt can be humbling.

Litter is everywhere and slobs are everywhere. My property has several hundred feet of road frontage and I'm constantly picking trash.Once a year I pick trash from the surrounding area, this year I filled 3 LARGE trash bags and did n't get it all.Almost impossible to enforce the litter law the police tell me.I asked if a 30-06 through the engine would be alright, they thought that was a bad idea...O WELL!

Down here in Rachacha, a call to 911 about your stolen car will get you a mailed report for your insurance company, the cops are too busy even for grand theft auto!  Stop signs, red lights, no turn on left, all mere suggestions. At the jazz fest last week, I watched 4 country club types walk along eating , and just drop the papers on the ground when they were done, even with a receptacle 20 feet away.  We get told that a lot of the litter in the city is from trash cans that get blown over and then the paper gets moved around by the wind, but I doubt that is happening up in RT's area, unless everyone in Oswego County is stopping by the Pulaski McD's and then throwing the trash out the window on the way home.  "We all must do the best we can, and then hang onto that gospel plow."- Jackson Brown

Litter was my 'thing' a few years back in the SR area ( still pickup lots during the season myself and bring the trash back to Ct to put in my home trash barrels for pickup.)
Went to some  food places in Pulaski and wrote letters asking for -at the least- a flyer with to go meals about litter- - hadda go up the ladder was the common answer.
Also sent mail up those ladders as well as to Pulaski City Hall and the State of NY-- nothing got done.
Folks over on the other board had more luck with those pinkish bags available at Fat Nancys and the ability for we 'trash pickers' to throw them in that dumpster when filled- GOOD WORK.
Called the State of NY about more barrels in lots and to PLEASE empty them now and then. No luck there either- No manpower was the answer. One of their excuses was that local folks fill the barrels with house trash overnight-BS ALERT -then they suggested 'peer pressure' might work. OK-- thanks for nothing. Mighta suggested that we go there to fish not  have riverside confrontations. (gettin too old for the results-back in the day - yipee).
Whole experience made me feel like a brown shoe at a formal dance--
Its we individuals caring for the problem or nobody.
One might think that with all the $$$ they claim the fishery brings in a couple of bucks might be dedicated to keeping it kinda pristine- at least in general appearance- NOPE.

    Re:Some Changes (Local News) 2013/07/03 10:47:48 (permalink)
DEC is a joke sometimes, i had a blue heron last year behind my house that looked to have fishing line wrapped around it. So when i went down to my favorite hole that was next to it, it didnt fly away, just kinda inched its way away from me. I asked another guy who was down farther fishing how long its been there he said all day. Now the first thing that comes to my mind is that you cant get close to a heron cause they'll fly away, now if youve been fishing all day and you see this giant****bird standing there not doing anything, shouldnt you have a little bit of a heart?

So after my girlfriend found out, and a day and a half of calling DEC, Animal Control, 5-6 different animal rescues, nobody wanted to come out and help this bird out. So i got sick of it, me and a friend went down and actually picked up the bird to see where the hook was lodged. Sure enough some **** mustve hooked it right under the wing and broke it off so it couldnt fly. After doing a quick hook removal with pliers and fore-snips (we've all been impalled with a hook before) i got it removed. Along with a small bit of salmon for him to eat, he flew away the next day. But I was absolutely appalled that nobody would come down and even look at it. I even spoke to a DEC officer that said he would stop over.

I guess that's about all we can do,however if everyone that cares would pick up some trash and encourage others to do the same I bet it would help.

Just this morning I was walking with my Boxer at a local park and I came upon a new piece of "litter".Someone dumped 4 large concrete cylinders on the edge of a parking lot,I guess they figured the Twsp maintenance people needed them

Hey DW whats the word on the flashy new lodge going into the Schoolhouse? I heard last November. We {the general public, taxpayers, and license holders} were going to lose the Schoolhose pool and several hundred feet more downriver!
