Outboard Motor Help

I have a 50hp Yamaha 4 stroke auto inject engine (1990)

When I was coming in from the lake yesterday I went to get on her and it over revved(tacked) itself and wouldn't go anywhere.. I could go in low speed but couldn't go any higher than about 10mph.. I tried to get on it again and it did the same thing. We checked the obvious things.. We ripped the lower unit apart thinking we might of broke that gear pin in there( not sure of the exact name) but everything looked fine. We trailored it and tried to move the prop out of the water but it was stiff.. I was told it had something to do with a clutch mechanism.. Does anyone else have any ideas? Its not fuel or oil anything of that nature.. Thanks a lot, Ed

I hate buying new props, and getting the new slip clutches pressed in costs just about as much. Ditto on the prognosis. Take your prop off you can usually see the rubber being ground- spalled out.

I wouldn't be able to tell that its a spun prop by taking the prop off? Or by trying to turn the prop off the water? I put my foot on it and tried to turn the prop and couldn't get it to move.. What has to be done to check to see if that is the problem? Wish I knew more about the outboards.. defiantly learnining a lot by just having a boat for a few weeks

same thing happened to my prop. I bought a new one so I could have it right away, also had them fix the broken one for about a third of the cost of the new one.

Guessing your motor is a 2 stroke oil injected if it is a 1990. What size is it? You should be able to find numbers on it somewhere...

I took the prop off and had it in my hands and my dad looked at it and said everything was fine.. I just called him and he said there is no doubt in his mind that it isn't the prop but im going to order one anyways and hope its the right fix..
BG, I get confused on the 2 and 4 stroke I thought mine was a 4 with the oil and gas mix..  It's a 50hp.. I can get some more specs once I get over there today.. Ed

    It's a 2 stroke,

There is no rubber in the prop.. It's all spline together solid..

E, you won't be able to spin a spun prop with your hand or even with your foot and you can almost never tell by looking at them. If it is the original prop the rubber has probably deteriorated. I would get a new prop and get the old one fixed, I always carry a spare prop on board...

A good way to check for a spun hub is to mark the bronze hub against the aluminum part of the propeller with a permanent marker, take the motor out for a "spin" and see if the marks still line up.

What you could do BG is keep a looking for a 75 or 90hp.. I'm in the market.. gonna be selling this 50.. This motor is a beauty fires up first turn hopefully I can get a decent amount for it to put towards one that is alittle bigger to keep the girls happy for tubing

Do what Mika said.....mark the outside of the hub with a permanent marker, take the boat out and put some throttle to it to cause it to spin. Pull the boat out and check your mark.
Easy way to determine if it's the prop or if you have something else going on.

I'm no expert, but it goes something like this MC. The prop and the hub ( part that has the spline ) are 2 seperate pieces. They are then conected by a pressed in piece of rubber between the two. If I'm way off, please let me know.
