You tell me what fish did this? Unreal pics !

So far 2013 has been a great year of fishing so I'm just having some fun with this fishing post. I'll post the photos in a few days l This Rapala was brand new and now look at it. It's destroyed but still together ! What kind of fish could do such damage ? This was on 6 lb. line and the fish was landed  by my son ! I personally have never seen anything like this ever !     ????

    I've had muskies and pike do this to some balsa rapalas. Sometimes it is more caused by removing the hook. A couple times it was like that at the boat before I removed the hook.
    I've repaired these with locktite 5 minute epoxy, some sanding, and nail polish over white oil primer. Just bend the wire back in position and fill the void with epoxy and sand to smooth. should take multiple coats and give it about a day to dry after final epoxy coat before final sand.

    Wiper or a bowfin? Was the lure previously banged off a rock or something and possibly cracked?

      Have had many "NEW" lures destroyed by both Byrds & Cats. Not much of a problem with lures that have already landed a few fish though. There must be toothie critters about with that leader on the lure even with only 6llb. test so that could be a good clue also.

    I watched the guy land this fish. It was a musky, However I wont say where or exactly how big it was.

    Alright I'll post it up. It's being mounted by Higgins Brothers over in Linesville and it's a local Musky of a lifetime. Casting from shore with light line and a excellent drag reel along with experience fighting bigger fish the monster was landed. This fish was caught by my son and will be displayed on his wall for many years to come. It took the usual 10,000 cast but was well worth it. The Musky measured 49 " long with a 27 " girth and hit my unofficial scale at 40 lbs. even ! It's a Pymy hog and he was Musky hunting. I know why 6 lb. line for Musky ? His answer to me is "Dad these fish are line shy so I use lighter line on purpose" ! I have to agree some what because he has caught and landed 8 Musky in two years all 40 '' plus from wade fishing local rivers and lakes. Anyway here are some photos..................have a good Memorial weekend and special thank's to all our Vets !

    That is an awesome fish he should get the busted lure put in the fishes mouth to add to the story.  Congrats

    Wow, nice fish and busted up lure pic is pretty cool too.
     
    I'm still a bit confused on the fish being shy of heavier than 6lb running line, but not the black steel leader?  Then again, I'm not the one holding a 49" musky in the picture (or the patience to focus on musky)... 
     
    Pass along another congrats from this way on landing with such light line, and catching that hog in general.  I wonder if he is in the running for any line size records?

    I agree Pork but I guess Muskies are far sighted when it comes to seeing line. LOL..... That 6 lb. line and leader combo has landed the majority of his Musky catches. I just know some facts, the one night he hooked five Muskies landed three and I stood twenty feet away tossing the same thing and never had a hit ! Go figure ? I use 10 lb. line with leader combo and have caught Muskies but no where near the hook ups as my son. We know fighting the fish longer stresses them out but most of our Musky fishing is Spring or Fall during the cooler temps. All our Musky released so far have swam away unharmed. Including this one for all the critics and doubters...........................thanks to all the people with the great complements !

    It obviously is working for him, thanks for sharing the tip.  I guess if they see the line 20'-30' in advance it might turn them away from that area, and when your lure comes by they aren't even looking in that direction?  If they see something that looks like a good snack, it might be too much of an instinct to attack regardless of something unnatural attached to the front?  Like I said, I don't have the patience for musky fishing myself, so haven't done the research.  Very impressed that 6lb line held up to a hog like that, especially one that destroyed a plug like that one is.

    The bait got destroyed while it and the fish was in the net, correct? The bait was hooked into the net and the fish at the same time and the fish rolled and thrashed, pulling the wire out of the bait?
     
    The bait coulndt have been ruined during the fight, at least I would hope a rapala would take more abuse than 6lb line. Because the line would break before the bait.

    Not sure about the net tearing up part of the lure. The fish was netted on shore so that's possible. I would think the same that the line should break before the wire pulled apart on the Rapala but who knows. I wasn't there at this time but I know the fish battle lasted around 15 minutes or so and the fish did surface jump at least once. It's amazing that every now and then these huge fish actually full body jump out of the water. One Musky I landed two years ago did a full body Tarpon shaking style jump that I thought was unreal for a heavier fish. Most Musky just power run when hooked and head shake near the surface. One thing for sure they are a blast when you hook up with one even the ones that get away !

    I've had muskies do that to my rapalas but I've never caught one that big. Nice catch.
