2013

Anyone do any scouting yet? I've went out the past 2 nights. Heard a few birds each night and even had one roost 50 yds from me!   he had about a 10 inch beard! It's gettin to be that time!!!!

Grandson shot a 4 year old 20# yesterday in a snowstorm. Not a very nice day but the action was hot.  It's 20 degrees out as I type.

I sat with a mentored youth hunter till 9:00 in snow showers and ferocious winds. I worked a longbeard to 75 yards but he never made it into crossbow range.  When the sun would peak, the gobblers started talking and responding. When the sun hid and the wind increased, things went silent. We did have a jake sneak in behind us silently but we never got a shot as the red head out of the corner of our eyes at 10 yards suprised us.

Birds were there but it was a tough morning for hunting.

My 13 year son shot a 18 lb gobbler with a 9" beard. Only bird we heard all morning. Set up on him different times, third time was a charm. He was an easily exciteable bird, but very wary once inside 100 yards. He had no interest in decoys, he walked through our second set, passing the decoys, gobbling has he continued up the valley. At our third set we aggressively cut at him twice with a box call and waited. 10 minutes later he gobbled 60 yards to our left and strutted into gun range.

Daughter (8) got her first at about 6:45 sat when two jakes hit the field and charged the decoys.  Son was hunting with a friend, his set up was no good, so we regrouped, headed in to a new spot around 10 and got an answer right away.  Worked him for about 20 min and bang, we were tagged out on a less than ideal day.  Very greatful, Very Lucky, Very Proud.

My season looks bleek. Snapped my ankle last week. Wife says I can't go hunting. I said yeah right. She said okay but you must hunt from the front porch. So Tuesday I got up late, 7am, gave a few yelps. Nothing.
She walks into the kitchen @ 8:30 and calls me to the window. There goes a 10" gobbler strutting by.

Hit the roads at 5:30 am,lots of gobbling at every stop, hooted at all stops. 4 out 5 spots had several gobbling birds. Pulled into my honey hole at 6:30 and saw a big boy following 3 hens right past my tree at 25 yards. A day early, I may hunt Sat. but to busy with work. Good luck to all and be safe.

So, this is just me b**chin about how people suck.... I hunt private land. I was sitting in my spot at 6am sharp... Gobbling all over in the roosts... 7am I got a flock in the field, long beard starts strutting to me... Out of nowhere, some jackwagon runs out from the other side of the field, unloads 3 shots at the long beard, and misses.... I stand up, he seems me and take off running back where he came from... There is a road about 100 yards on the other side of the woods past where I was sitting... Once agin, private posted land, me and one other guy hunt it... I hear him squeel tire as he pulls away... So I'm guessing this ****hat was driving around, heard gobbling and stopped to do a run and gun.... After all that noise, the birds took off, never heard another gobble, sat till 915 and was so heated i couldn't sit it out till noon. Some real true hunters and sportsman out there. People suck

That sucks man typical first day all the Jimmy's are out, we had some jack off pull his truck into the field at quarter to 6 listen for a gobble and took off they set up on turkeys and they slipped past them and sat in our lap hahaha love it when it actually works mind u this is private land where I'm the only one ( according to the owner) he gave permission to hunt

I once had a guy try to kick me off a piece of land that I own.  Safe to say he will not becoming around again.  I also once had a guy in my deer stand on my property using my propane heater try to convince me he had permission to be there and to get lost when I approached and told him I wanted to use it. He won't be back either.

I'm surprised not many reports on here, good or bad.

I had one of those mornings where everything goes right.  Hunt long enough and I guess that will happen.  Just counting the things out of my control that went right...

    1.  Good turkey hunting weather: cold, clear night, no wind.
    2.  Didn't bust any deer on the way in.
    3.  Didn't bust any turkeys off the roost on the way in.  Definite possibility the way I chose the walk.
    4.  First gobble sounded off before I accidentally got too close to roosted birds.
    5.  No other hunters on these birds.  Seemed strange considering you could hear them gobble for a distance and sounded off more times than I could count.
    6.  Due to being out of position, lower than the birds, I grabbed the nearest big tree.  They were roosted about 100 yards straight up hill.  Not exactly the best set-up.
    7.  Shot was presented.

Sometimes it works out I guess.

Heard one on my side of the hill and one across the valley. Gave a couple soft calls to let him know I was there. About fly down time I called again and someone else opened up between me and the bird. The bird went silent but the guy kept calling and 10 min later went bang.

8:30 I started another one and at 9:15 had him on the other side of a brush pile looking for me. Couldn't tell what he had for a beard and he eventually got suspicious and went back down the hill.

Half hour later 2 hens came in quiet and stayed quiet.
One of the nicer opening days weather wise I can remember for a long time.

Slow on the gobbler front. Did manage to pick a few pounds of Morels to make the morning somewhat of a success.
