3/27/13
Well I got to out again today and my dad was back home so I did not have to check on my grandmother. I fished from 10 until 3 after my dentist appointment (which was cavity free). The north side was full of this Canadian group of about 7 guys and my rock on the head was open so I stayed on the south side. Nary a nibble down on my end for an hour. Saw a spot open up stream and I went up fished there for a while and got one hit and rolled one with a head shake. At about 12:00 the guys on the point left for lunch and I jumped up there and it was game on. 4 on the bank lost a HUGE male at the net, it would have been by far my biggest one, I am guessing 15lbs. I also lost a 10 plus lb female too as I was trying to tail her. It was quite difficult trying to land them on my own. I was 4 for 10 on legit hook ups and had at least 4 or 5 foul hooked fish today, most sped down the river and broke off. It was probably one of my best days down there. Everyone around who stayed most of the day had a few hook ups. Funny thing I am getting ready to cast and out of nowhere a boat come floating by. Boat in the LFZ............. Yes it was the DEC. You should have seen a few guys turn around quick and "tie on a new fly" At least one guy down from me had been fishing with what looked to be a slinky of about 3/4 ounce. You should of seen him try to cast, he was the first one to turn. They pulled up to the shore and only checked one guy and explained to him loud enough for many to hear that it was 1/8 ounce counting fly and swivel. They asked him to remove one of his splits and moved on. I think I only got pics of 3 of the fish and will post the porn later this PM, one was small, but on the bank.

Yes and yes RJ. The only thing that would have made it a better day was someone to share the water with. I am getting much better detecting the more subtle takes that I missed last year. Seeing the line twitch or feeling that take/ tic that is not the bottom. For some reason I had a few fouled today, 2 were obviously in the motor they were gone, just pointed and held, no need to chase a fish and hold up folks fishing with one in the tail. The other 2 I got close and saw the fly in it's cheek and one was under the jaw. Maybe those were good hits and got them on the hook set. Lots of difficulty landing them on that side without a net man and I got alot of fish close today, but the hooks popped when I tried to tail them or net them.

Wanted to add today's fly of the day was a peach egg in single or Babine style, pink steelhead hammer came in second. Also got 1 or 2 hits on a green casddis. Not a touch on stones today by me or anyone else I talked to even thought there were quite a few crawling on the snow. Nothing on th, blues eggs today and Pea hurl flies either

They must have a launch up there somewhere. You should have seen the heads turn and do a double take. Not me, I was quick to cast behind it and keep casting. Did pick up a hit a few minutes after they went through. I have a feeling that this weekend it will be PACKED. If the water stays manageable I may venture a few other places. Maybe it being easter will keep the crowds down sunday. The wife has a very sore back and that will keep us from traveling I think. Sarge it was was a beautiful day, although the water is still cold. Mid 40's with just a few peaks of sun that only lasted for a second or 2

They launch behind hatchery. Been/ seen it before. Yes I think the weekend & Monday UFZ opener will be zoo like in those areas. Rest of river below Ellis should be normal.. I'd be looking near there for crowd control if that was me. I'm hoping things settle back down by Monday afternoon , I'd like to revisit old times there and will be solo for a few days . If not then my wheels will keep spinning in other directions.
Jack , hope you catch a tug but if you say ain't no fish there then ain't nobody going to catch one. I'm going out on sport/ Hudson for day Friday . Some fishing and some campsite clean up. When the big boys come ill let you know.. My boat ( not kayak or canoe) kinda sucks for comfort but my bro-in-laws goes here to NYC without issues and I have many friends :)
Clint : This is your thread man and deserve all the kudos. You sparked my interest back in that game. Seems your learning your drifts and presentation better & better. Comfort zone is in .. Now work little by little around that move a bit here and there , watch what's happening on the bottom. Check out the heads / tails , try some swings and off the wall big stuff. Once things warm up ( I still see snow ) you'll see changes happen. Don't be tippet/ leader shy. 8-10-12 # works with the right material.
Keep up the good vibes and having fun with fishing

Trev, I may check it out Saturday to stay away from the crowds if I go. I have LOTS of things to do around the house though. Water temps are creeping up........ RJ, I have a few places in mind if the water stays down and others if it goes up a bit. That place is like crack though I know they are there and I keep going back to get a fix. I got out the bigger stuff today, but did not use it. My wife has been bugging me that she wants to try one and we eat ALOT of fish so................ I used the 5lb maxima today and had good results with it. I also have some 8lb Frog hair that I use with the bigger stuff. The few guys I talked to today, there and in town, said there is not much else going on elsewhere.

Never tried it way up there, but one of the LSR branches runs right behind our farm, next to my house, way too many beaver dams cut down on the brookies. There is also a branch in Mexico that gets some salmon and steel

Above Redfield and the reservoir, you have the North Branch ansd the East Branch of the Salmon River. The Little Salmon is the one that flows through Mexico and there is an impassable dam below Mexico. Main SR, the East Branch has some beautiful trout water, Public lot on Ryan Rd, and some interesting tribs, Brook Trout up in the headwaters around Osceola, and a resident rainbow stream in Prince Brook, which comes in in the NYS land down around Ryan Rd. North Branch is lower gradient, so a lot more silty bottomed long runs, but also some great tribs, Mill Stream comes in just above Redfield and is a fine Brook Trout stream with miles of Public Fishing rights, the Mad River is the main trib and comes in off Harverster Mill Rd, with a fair hike access to some of the better easement water off Otto Mills Road. There is a public lot on County Rt 17, the north road out of Redfield, where 17 crosses the main N branch and the other spots are off easterly side roads below that crossing. Headwaters of the North Branch and some tribs are in the Little John FWMA or nearby, and then it is just over the divide into the Sandy Creeks headwaters. Everything up there has brookies if it has water all year, they tend to be small, you can fish all AM and catch 50 and not have enough 8 inchers for lunch. Lots of NYS Forests (keep this in mind for snowshoes and grouse, deer disappear on the tug hill as soon as the spots are gone!) and miles of easements, check the DEC Website. Stocking #'s are also on the website, and they put browns and rainbows in. Also the reservoir in the areas where these branches meet it can be really good for large trout out of a canoe. This should keep you busy for at least a couple of seasons! L13

There is a public lot in Osceola, and another almost to the headweaters along the Osceola-West Leyden Road. A little further up that road is Point Rock Creek and the Fish Creek system above the Rome Reservoir. If you have 4WD, there is a lot of water up there on State lands, Maps on the DEC website. One caution for anything dirt on the hill, these roads are snowmobile trails all winter, and when spring comes all those sharp little pieces of metal that help hold the tracks on the snow but sometimes fall out have gathered on the dirt surface, and they like to eat tires. The snowmobile clubs run a truck with a big electromagnet on to pick up a lot of this debris once the snow is gone and the surfaces have hardened up, but in a late spring year like this, it can be early May before they get that done and until then, you need to carry 4 or 5 spares to have a chance of getting back out, and always make sure you have a GOOD SPARE if you leave the pavement to explore, any time of year. Mountain bikes are a great alternative for reaching some of these spots, rig up a PVC tube to hold your rod, Also, the Official Bird of the Tug Hill is the black fly, the bites I've gotten on the hill take all summer to heal, and make ADK and Quebec bites look like nothing, so for the 2-3 weeks that they are bad, which unmercifully coincide with the best fishing, make sure you have a lot of high DEET bugspray, head net and Jersey gloves, rubber bands over cuffs, and there was reason John Voelker smoked Parodi cigars other than to make himself smell like an old Italian! Sometimes rubbing leeks all over your self helps too, but you will definitely not be welcome in a local wateringhole for an afternoon cold one if you've been ramping all morning. Added to all this if you camp (and you'll need to contact the local ranger for a permit to camp on State Forest Lands, unlike in the ADKS where you get the first 3 nights with no permit) is that the bears are back on the Hill, so you want to follow bear safe practices, and keep a really clean camp. Sounds a lot like the Southern Vt. wilderness brookie fishing that's in my back yard. Not literally- but a 1/2 hr. to trailheads. Very cool- I made plans with a friend at Orvis yesterday to beat our way into some new beaver flows. Blackflies be ****ed..... Clint, I'll give you a call this weekend and see if you're around. I won't be available here, just by phone. Hope I catch you- if not have fun at Green Day. Charlie

Good luck guys-- On one side am very happy for all those who get out to the SR and enjoy the fishing and on the other I kinda long for a few decades ago when Spring Steel was a more or less solitary affair.
