Pontoon Deck Rebuild

Has anyone ever replaced a pontoon floor?  If so, do you recommend using marine grade plywood or can I just use pressure treated plywood?

as far as I know, marine plywood is just plywood made with waterproof glue.  I would still coat it with resin to keep the water out.

Be careful with the treated plywood, I believe that the chemicals in the pressure treatment will react with aluminum metal and eat it.

Best bet would probably be 3/4" AC Fir, the Fir is naturally "rot resistant".

Have you looked at any of the composite material like "starboard" or "coosa" board?

Just redid one last winter. I would use the marine plywood and treat it with a clear penetrating epoxy sealer (cpes). Use 3M 5200 on any screw or bolt holes to seal out the water. I checked the synthetic materials but the cost was too high. If done right the plywood decking will last 20+ years. Check out www.pontoonstuff.com and www.jamestowndistributors.com

Erie Mako is right, treated plywood has copper in it and you'll get the whole dissimilar metal electrolysis going on that will eat the aluminum...

Thanks for the info guys.  As for the marine plywood, do you know of any place in NWPA that carries it?

Check with your local home depot or lowes or even a local yard. I know you can order from their web sites and pick it up at the store.

Check out the "kits" on pontoonstuff.com you may find that buying that will be cheaper in the long run with all the fasteners, glue and carpet included...

Look into Greenwood products marine XL. It's treated, but not like the pressure treated stuff at home centers. It has a lifetime warranty against rot. Grady White uses it in their stringers and transoms. You'll have the first Grady White 'toon.

I bought marine grade plywood from Haines marine sales in Andover, oh a few years ago for a pontoon rebuild I did. Back then it was $85 a sheet. They actually beat or was the same as everyone else because the lumber yards had to order it in, they had what I needed in stock.

Do not use regular pressure treated. Not only does it affect the metal parts it can also render the glue used on the carpet useless and erode your carpeting.

I did about two years of research until I completely stripped my boat down and rebuilt it. Everything on my boat is new but the Aluminum pieces.
