Tribs
Now that the Genesee has finally come down to fishable levels for more than 2 days in row, there is over an inch of mostly rain in the forecast for the next 24 hours. That and the temps during the day should end western NY icefishing for 12-13, and push the Genesee river back into the brown and frown stage. However, the smaller tribs may turn on like gangbusters. This can be a tough time of year, a lot of good possibilities, and sometimes you can't get to any of them because the driving coniditons are so poor. But if the forecast is correct, Saturday could be a good day to hit lesser tribs for fresh spawners. L13

I wonder about the Big G. The putor says its gonna jump tommorrow but if that south-mid west storm hits down PA way it might lock everything up and give less runoff than they are thinking. It was lower by 4 inches today and dropped another 4 while I was there. My day in the barrel today. A quick handshake and gone in about 3 hours. It was just warming up when I left. Two others there this morning pinning and 2 other pinners came just before I left. Saw one guy that appeared to be playing a fish.

Not an ice goer myself or atleast not yet, but someof areas within the region still have 8+ inches in some spots... i would assume the lack of ice in other areas is due to the above average water table we've had through out the the entire winter. Although temps have been really cold at times, with the two brief thaws we've had water tables have held very strong. On the other hand, town of richland/ mexico/fernwood area are holding a 12-18 inch snow pack... altmar had 3-4 foot of packing snow over the weekend... cant imagine what the tug has. And its true pack this year... with the water tables so high and so much pack we may get some serious water sooner than later in all tribs. Lucky, i think youre right with smaller tribs. They probably will be dynamite before the real run off comes... then they will get blown out... last time i checked the forecast i saw day highs in 20's and nights in the tens and teens scattered about. Im real interested to see how the water situation turns out this spring...

I'm guessing Lucky was talking about tribs to the west of you Dime. Around here half my yard is green today. Not the snowpack melt to worry about. Wintery mix called for here before turning to snow. Could be 1-2 days of high dirty flow followed by a few dropping and clearing.

Two-bizzle... what a difference. Took a walk out back today. Thought there was onle 6-8 inches but was wrong... good 8-12 of pack with 4-6 of crunchy on top. Plowed out the camp over the weekend and ther was 3+ there. I imagine mid last week there was more before settling and packing took place. One of these days i gotta make it out to the genny... it is my favorite beer priced at $3.49 a six pack of tall boys... genny light that is ;)

Noah still calling for a big push down the G. Maybe they've been holding back while checking the powerhouse work out running lesser amounts thu it? Looks like this old toad won't have to struggle around rock climbing the bank for a while. Some pretty good sized, basketball, rock was falling on the west side yesterday during the thaw.

Was at Empire and Linear on the I, one male caught at Linear. Asian man, put it in his pack, I mentioned the one fish limit, and he maintained up and down that it is three, and he is keeping the fish for the eggs. I said have fun explaining what the book says to the Wardens. I've paid my public education dues, but as of last night, I have a copy of the book in my truck. L13

Good luck with that Chuckles. When the rules change to the 4 foot max between weight and hook I talked to a couple wardens at the lfz and told them they could write all the tickets their pens had ink for and they told me that wasn't the reg. Went to the old F150 got the reg booklet and read it to them word for word and their response was they would have to check with their boss. The idiots could have gone a long way towards cleaning that spithole up if they went at it with a tape measure and showed no mercy. Plain and simple. No proving intent. More than 4 feet and you eat a ticket. Tip your server we'll be here all week. And the next. Now straighten your act up or go back to Jersey, or PA or Ct or Vt or Ma or Rochester but you can't do that here and not pay the price. PS looks like the G is just about back in shape.

The tribs up north crested on Friday and look as though they were prime this weekend. The river is WAAAAAAAY up at 1200 now and 1500 tonight and tomorrow and that is too High for me. I am fairly uncomfortable at anything over 1k. I will fish it sometimes, but if there is other fishing to do or something else that strikes my fancy that goes a long way. L13 Maybe that guy has a black market hatchery and needs the male for his eggs. Was up north on a trib and saw a guy gut a fish at stream side and then throw it on his stringer. A bit later he caught another and did the same. Walked by and asked nonchalantly "Thought it was only one trout, per guy" He told me the one was his buddies. Had another guy on the river tell me it was 1 of each. He had a brown and a steel on his stringer. In the 2 years I have fished the LFZ I have NEVER seen a warden up there. This year alone I saw 3 different guys fishing with mono only.

Clint,I would think the DEC has more than enough to keep them busy below the bridge.I have encountered them a couple times on the "zones".But what goes on downstream is far worse than avything happening above the bridge.

I got stopped once at a place north of SR that shall remain nameless to protect Clint's honeyhole. It took me forever to find the license. Next day, same warden, only took me a minute to find the license. The third day he remembered me. Take a look at the latest issue of NYS Outdoor news. Read the cuffs and collars and it will give you a sense of the h********t these gutys have to deal with. Then read the list of shooting related accidents in the last year, and you will understand that for at least some "sportsman," maybe they can't read. Could not get out yesterday due to homework, and work work today will keep it very short in the PM. I'm sure the Gen will stay fine until Friday afternoon, and then blow out for me on the weekend again! L13

Clint i was dying to hit the tribs friday afternoon but never got the chance... id venture to assume that the salmon will not go down in flow for a while... it will probably only go up from here for a while... it should boast a healthy natural spawn though... for the dec...i only had them check my license once behind the motels in oswego a few years back in mid february... good ole matt dorrett it was... i think better supervision can always come in to play if they wanted to... i do also think that in true steelhead season there isnt any more harm going on downstream from rt. 52 than upstream... seems more and more fish getting reeled in backwards in the lfz as time goes on... all you can do is what best suits yourself... i aint no cop/dec officer and dont plan on being one... i set my cruise control on 74 on the highway and it would be a shame if i get a speeding ticket for that if ya know what i mean ;)

Clint- Meant to post this before about two trout. I think you could actually limit out with three, but only one can be a steelhead, and the steelhead would have to be at least 21 inches long. Please point out the error of my ways if I am wrong. L13

Dime Some waters yes. Different regs to the first road bridge (lake regs apply). Not so the SR. There is an imaginary line across the mouth and river regs start there.

Its the first buoy inside the break wall at the mouth of the sr that trib regs start. Then there is this funky reg that starts April 15th ? Till aug 15 th that's allows night fishing UP TO the rt 3 bridge . Don't quote me on that one. And another reg that says state wide angling regulations take over ( except night) on April 15th- aug 15 th . ( used to be march 15) Which means anything goes. Yea you need to carry the rule book if you plan on pushing or just following all the sr regs Now yes other tribs have their own special regs

Well, despite all the snow astill lingering around, spring is in full swing, chrome in the tribs-wise. One of the closest places for me to fish has a waterfall about 5 miles upstream, from the frogwater, not big enough to prevent the fish from accessing the 17 or so miles upstream, but enough of a challenge to slow them down especially as the water drops. Below this falls there is about 100 yards of cascading pocket water, and then a very popular pool. The right side of the stream is lined with small trees and icy rocks, and the left side is not a whole lot better, although there are few trees. A check of the flow gage Monday noon said it was a good day to use some saved vacation. I fished the pool for a while and noone was doign anything, and there were not many people around. But I had seen more than a dozen rolls in a half hour on the very high flows last Thursday where this stream goes into the big pond . So I crossed on an old bridge and walked upstream to the falls, putting on the polaroids on the walk. In the drop pool for the falls, it was like the troughs at Altmar, a 10 lber hanging in the big standing wave, 3 huge fish facing downstream into the eddy current, and numerouse places where the occasional tail or dorsal broke through the foam. I had a little fly on, and started with that, three drifts and I come up solid on a little male about 5 lbs who tears up the hole, but the vibration of the tip says he is tail hooked, so I staight line. It took three tries to tie a glo bug on, my hands were shaking so badly. And the slobs are still there fading in and out of sight in the turbulance. Roe glo bug and a sack, and 2 drifts and I am into the biggest steelei I've had on in at least 10 years, runs around the pool and then starts for the lake, breaks the 8 lb like 6x porpoising down through the white water below before I could even start to follow. Shaky hands and 5 minutes of tying and I'm rigged again with another glo bug and bag. No visible fish in the slack water, so I lob out into the froth, and bang I'm into another one bigger than the second one. This fish stayed connected down through the first set opf rapids, dropped in behind a concrete structure streamside while I picked my way around the trees and over the rocks. I got to the concrete and my line was wrapped, I figure the pig has to be gone, start working on unwrapping the line and I see the sack come downstream as the line comes free, and then at least a yard of chrome rolls with the glo bug visible in the corner of the maw. I tightened up, and after a couple spins out in front of me she resumed her mad dash for the lake, three brook trout on a fly style jumps as she navigated the heavy chute into the big pool and gone. Another 10 minutes to retie, 12 lb and another glo bug,. I looked at my watch, I had arrived at 04:30 it was 05:21. No more action between then and dark but I watched a nice size pair swim up the heavy flow over the falls as if the water had no force at all. No way I could take off yesterday, but cut out early and the hole was again loaded, but the fish were on the other side of the creek due to bright sun. I did nothing, but the guy across the stream, who had a slightly crazy look on his face when I arrived and gestured wildly about fish in the pool, had on 6 in the next 45 minutes using a little orange fly. I noticed that he was wet to the knees ansd standing ankle deep in the flow, but he didn't have hippers or waders on. He finally left when the action slowed and the cold water finally overpowered the adreneline. Right before dark, there were fish in front of me but they wanted nothing to do with a Chartreuse glo bug, and there was not enough light left for tying, or negotiating the hazards to go downstream with a fish. The lesson in this tale of intermittent reinforcement is that NOW is the time to use the time off, as this kind of intensity in the tribs only lasts a couple of weeks although there will be fish now for at least another month if you explore the gravel areas. Have fun!! L13

I'm hoping for little black stones on some nameless frogwater. With a lot of luck could just get a rise to a skating dry fly. I did say a lot of luck didn't I. Lucky think the ghost of Tony Skillton might be watching?

Lucky I just checked the mail I I didn't get a rent payment from you for my water. You know I paid dearly for that spot. I'll blame the lazy socialist post office union "workers" (you know how they are Tuna, always lookjing for a place to hide to avoid doing any work) one more day before I come looking for youy with my T-ball bat ala Rocky Balboa. You better come up with somew cash or another post like your last one or I gotz ta get my Touch Money crew to do some friendly persuading.
