PICK A NUMBER ANY NUMBER

I was looking at a Lake Erie Salmonine Stocking annual graph.

This graph reflects 2,200,000 steelhead stocked for 2011.

Another graph:
2011 Steelhead Stocking by Tributary/ Area reflects 1,002,000.

The 2011 Steelhead Stocking Summary by Jurisdiction 1,092,000.

 The wwcw.stockingdetailshistorical.aspx states 1,851,125 steelhead.

I was told by a fish commission officer that the conflicting numbers are a “computer glitch” really? That’s why I am confused….we are not talking about a small discrepancy in numbers, computer glitch, I don’t think so, human error most likely. So that makes me wonder who really knows what the real numbers are if the fish commission doesn’t have any idea.

dreamer, if I may ask, why are you concerned about it?  Not saying you shouldn't be, or it's not important, just wondering what your angle is on seeking the info.

Here's the deal, and no disrespect to you because you're a new guy on here, but this question comes up about every year or two on here. As you found in your first post, there are some who would prefer catching a few fish in solitude and some who just want to catch a bunch of fish and don't care how many people are around to do it.  So, don't take the replies personally.

Stocking numbers are incredibly high, and will probably remain incredibly high.  With about an 8-15% return rate, depending upon which sources you believe.  Stocking numbers aren't always the best indicator of future return rates.  3 years in the depths of a Great Lake is a long time for any fish to survive from smolt stage to adult stage.  Lots of factors go into return rates - predation by other fish; forage base and competition for that forage; Canadian commercial fishing; and sport fishing by anglers and charters in the lake are just a few.

I wouldn't worry about the steelhead in a few years we'll have all the Asian carp you can catch.
