Here is one of my log entries for the week of May 18th thru the 26th 2012. This is to prove to you how good fishing in Erie is. Keep in mind I have fished in Erie for about 38 yrs. All fishing was done ON SHORE,no boats. I never fished more than 4 hours(usually I ran out of bait). On my way driving up to Erie on the 18th I stopped and fished a state park lake in Central Pa. I used fat heads for bait. I caught 12 brookies, 8 largemouth and a crappie. On the 19th I fished in the channel(lake side). I caught 20 smallies, 4 largemouth and many rock bass. I used minnows and jigs. On the 20th I fished off a pier in the bay. I caught 1 smally, 1 largemouth, many rock bass and some perch. The 21st was the best day. In the morning I fished in the channel. I caught MANY smallies, largemouth, rock bass and 2 perch. I won't give numbers because very few would believe it. I ran out of minnows and jigs! Took a nap and then fished a trib in the afternoon from 2 pm til about 5:30. Caught 11 browns and 11 smallies. Was a blast on ultra light tackle! Waded in old sneakers, just like we use to when we were kids. All fish caught on wax worms and minnies. On the 22nd I again fished the channel. Caught 26 smallies and many rock bass. In the evening I biked around P.I. On the 23rd i fished the channel again. Caught 19 smallies, 20 rock bass and a couple of big sunnies. On the 24th I fished the channel in the evening. Caught 26 smallies,10 largemouth, many rock bass,5 perch and 3 sunfish. On the 25th I biked P.I. On the 26th I helped out at the kids fishing rodeo at Misery bay and headed home. Biggest bass were in the 20 inch range. Many 4,5, and a few 6lb smallies. As I said before these fish were ALL caught from shore. No other freshwater fishery in the world can come close Erie!

Bulldog is right, Lake Erie is one of the many places one can consistantly catch fish, French Creek & the Allgheny being a couple more, but one has to be careful for the lake can wake up and getcha when you least expect it! A waterway that deserves respect!

Agree with Noplace 100% .The Bay can be awesome on the right days early Spring. Fished many a day just in the Bay years back . Loaded with Smallies and Rock Bass plus Perch, Pike, and Largemouths. Usually ran out of bait in 4-6 hrs. Usually had the 50 Qt. cooler full of big Shinners and Fatheads from Meadville B&B Bait. Won't say all numbers you would call me a lier but I'll say this .....cleaned over 50 Rockies almost every trip and that was just the large keepers. Excellent eating !

Pork anything can be caught in the bay. I have caught walleye(2) in the bay in July(1992). I have seen Lake trout caught in the bay in April. In August you can't have enough minnies for the crappie. 100 perch in a day is not that hard to do in the bay in April. Once again this is ALL from the SHORE. EFFORT=REWARD Put your time in you will catch fish. Nothing compares to freshwater fishing in Erie.

The Bay can be awesome but timing can really kill a trip, even in that sweet spot of May to June. That's from shore or boat. A serious Eastern front (I believe) or just bad conditions have killed a trip for me a number of times. And depending on how warm of a spring, everything could shift a few weeks or more, I've learned. But after a few decades of fishing all over Western PA , NC and a few dozen lakes from Florida to Northern Ontario and Quebec, there's still no body of water I've found that I'd rather spend time on than Erie. As for other PA waters - unless it's a 20 minute drive from home or less, I'd rather just take the 2-hour trek to Erie any day.

I was discussing ice fishing for walleye at Pymatuning this year with a very wise and noble man. He said, "I don't get too worked up about eyes though...I get a good amount through the ice [at Pymatuning], but nothing compared to Erie." That pretty much sums it up, doesn't it?

Welcome to the new FishErieForum A lot of the people who made this site enjoyable have been banned. I used to laugh reading a lot of the threads on hear. I miss those days....... I also miss a lot of the threads that actually gave newbies real good info about fishing and techniques of fishing who wanted to learn things. You could tell who they were cause they asked with genuine sincerity for help. Its all in the way they word their thread. With that being said I will still provide what knowledge I know to help those who sincerely ask for help and I will still post some smart azz answers to keep things lively.

Sounds like a chemical imbalance...maybe you should see a docto-r as well. Anyone who's worth having a conversation with has found their way to the outlaw hangout by now anyway...many still post here...but that's where the real fun stuff is happening. Lately, I only show up here to occasionally chime in on a real discussion or amuse myself with a fake discussion.

Back to the spring smallies... IMO, i dont know of very many places (IMO) on earth where you can literally catch 30-40 smallies all over 14 inches in 1 day than PI. And yes, i've seen many guys do it from wading. Go halfway from east pier at the marina and the monument in misery. That entire sand shelf is wadable and prime location. Def worth the trip. Ran into a guy from Texas last year out there on a kayak, he had only caught 4-5 smallies and 1 pike that morning, and was more excited than a kid in a candy store. Remember, this is my own opinion! And are you going to catch 30-40 in one day? Probably not, but it is possible and has been done! I say do it!
