Looking for help....

I am going to try steelhead fishing, I have never done this before. I am a trout fisherman and fish Conneaut, Little Shenago, Woodcock, Sugar Creeks. I know I need a Noodle rod, what else and what kind of bait do I need. Also what are the best locations to try, looking for any help,   thanks.

    Welcome jolodge

This post from a few years back should answer a lot of the questions you might have about gear, tactics and bait: http://forums.fishusa.com..aspx?m=109802&high=

Everybody has their go to baits for spin fishing: Hard to beat single eggs from Poor Richards (they are different at different bait shops) or minnows/shiners.  Most stuff you'd use for trout will work for steelhead from time to time.  Pretty much everything else in that post is spot on for starting out.

As for locations, you can always find some steelhead somewhere on Elk or Walnut Creek this time of year, although you're gonna have to wait till they thaw out with this cold snap.  Check out the Angler Maps here and you'll find plenty of places to try with parking and public access areas well marked.

That Danjae basics thread is pretty much all you need.  Check out the responses below his post as well.  Read it 4-5 times.  It will help you catch fish.

"Set the hook if in doubt", has turned many "this sucks" days, into, "I wish that I would have been doing that all day" days.  It still usually takes me 3-4 missed opportunities to catch on...  You need to be quick and pay attention.  If that float does anything beyond the normal flowing down stream movement, give it a set.  Noodle or fly rod will help from making you feel foolish if it isn't a fish.  You can just give it a snap of the wrist, rather than giving the, send it home set.  If your wrist snap set gives resistance, then give a reassurance set.

If you go the skein route, one of the good guys on this forum posted this link a few months back.  Works really good.  Pre-tie a few on flouro carbon while the weather sucks, put in zip lock bag and ready for your trip.  I've got multiple fish off of one piece of skein.  If just using a hook, many times, I'd have to rebait 2-3 times without a strike.

Don't forget that you are a good fisherman already.  Confidence plays a role.  If you have some go to trout lures, give them a shot.  I'd probably go with the suggestions on the thread first, but if they aren't working, remember that these are just trout.  Anything that you have caught a trout on before, someone has likely caught a steel head on.  If I get skunked, and haven't tried everything that I brought along, then it is my fault for not trying hard enough.
