Nassau, The Bahamas Flyfishing Question

My wife booked us into Nassau the first week of February.  Of course I would like to get a day in flyfishing, but Nassua seems to be fairly barren of flyfishing guides except for Bonefish (they all seem to have that nickname) Simon Bain.

The last time we were in Nassau, I took the short flight to Andros to fish with Bonefish Bradley.  It was a good trip, but the 20 minute flight was delayed for three hours due to a blinking warning light, so the day got cut very short -- missing the the morning tide.  I am not so sure I want to take that same risk again, since it seems to be the norm, along with the plane being overbooked (you pay at the counter with cash, no pre-buys, although there is a required booking) and possibly not getting a flight.  In additon, the flight gets in late and you have to quit fishing at about 2 PM to catch the return.

Has anyone fished Nassau, and if so, with whom?

    Jimmy,
Have you ever caught a bonefish?
In case you haven't, they are, pound for pound, one of the strongest fish that swim...fresh or salt water.

    Dardys,
    You have a PM.

who would want to catch a bonefish? they are so little and kinda look like a silver skinny carp. the places they live are beautiful but I would be doing other things if I was there then trying to catch one of those little things. but to each his own i guess

I agree somewhat.  Bonefish are not my flats fish of choice.  But they are what there is in the Bahamas at this time of year, although I am really going to attempt to get a permit.  This fishing trip is basically so I don't have to hang on the beach or go to the straw market.  This is my wife's get away and I am just trying to make the best of being where I am when I am.

And you are also right about them not being like catching a steelhead.  It would take a two pound bonefish to pull as hard as a 10 pound steelhead.  The first bone I caught, a long time ago, weighed in at 11 pounds (Keys, not Bahamas).  It ran off the flyline and 150 yards of backing on the first run.  I have been fishing for steelhead in Erie since 1998 and haven't had the flyline and 150 yards of backing out if you added up all the steelhead I had on since then.

Just curious, what other things would you be doing?

Lots of European women (read topless) there this time of year... Bonefishing...

Seriously though, I haven't been to the Bahamas in 25 years, sounds like a good time...

Curiosity killed the cat, but for awhile I was a suspect.

Didn't want to risk the air connection to Andros, so I am staying on Nassau and fishing with Simon Bain.  He has some YouTube videos about his TV show.  They didn't sell me, not having any other options did.

I'll report how he was when I get back.  It might be a viable option for those that port there on cruises.

European women there?  Why I never.....
